8den, you said it!
I just came to make sure that Malcolm was being nominated as he deserves. The poor guy seems to want the Stundie real bad, and I hope he gets his wish.
I see the necessary has been done but a little more won't hurt.
Malcolm is claiming that the entire scene around the Pentagon on 11th September was staged, and one of his key points is that in one picture a man is shown holding up a drip bag attached to a casualty on a stretcher. For some reason Malcolm is convinced that the need to elevate drip bags went out with MASH, and every modern picture showing such an act has been set up, and is simply showing what people expect to see rather than actual practice.
Several people (including myself, GMarshall and MortFurd) have explained to him that no, it really is normal practice to hold the bag up, and that the normal standard i/v infusion does rely on gravity to get the fluid into the patient.
So we have nomination, part 1.
This is a combined post to yourself, Rolfe and any other drip feeds.
Now I remember why I never fancied being a schoolteacher.
Altogether now, after me,
In order to have GRAVITY feed, you must first have GRAVITY.
No BIG hole in the top of the bag = no chance for GRAVITY to act = the photo is staged.
Then fls explains that no, you do normally hold up the drip bag, and she knows this because she is a doctor and uses the things all the time.
This provokes nomination, part 2.
24 carat nonsense. In order for gravity to work, you need a source of GRAVITY.
That's his opinion of a doctor, who actually uses the things. He has also accused me of "demanding respect from a position of elitism" when I explained that I do know how they work because I'm a vet.
Pomeroo opined that it doesn't get any better than this. But then Ivor the Engineer asked Malcolm, "What are viable sources of gravity?"
Which provoked nomination, part 3.
Of course SpitfireIX trumped Malcolm completely by posting a string of seven photographs of emergency workers administering drips and holding the bags above the patients. So far, Malcolm's only response to this has been to ask how many of these photos are staged. I think he imagines that rather than simply photograph an actual scene, all these organisations carefully set something up for the publicity purposes, and while they're doing it, make sure to do it wrong!

He doesn't seem to understand that atmospheric pressure will still work from outside the bag so long as the bag isn't rigid. The discussion is ongoing, hindered to some extent by the thread being moderated. Will there be any further parts to this worthy and indeed unsurpassed nomination? Only time will tell.
Rolfe.
