George Santos charged with defrauding campaign donors

Are there any deadlines?

According to CBS News:

The court's opinion says the "the aforementioned documents shall be kept under seal until Thursday June 22 at 12 p.m., during which time defendant may move to modify the conditions of his release, should the suretors seek to withdraw from serving as suretors."

I wish the ruling have been that the names all get revealed either way.

Looks like it was family, dad and aunt paid to spring him. Wonder where they got half a million?
CNN said:
A federal judge on Thursday unsealed the identities of the co-signers on embattled Rep. George Santos’ $500,000 bond that allowed the New York Republican to stay out of federal custody after he was charged in a 13-count indictment.

The guarantors were listed as Elma Santos Preven and Gercino Dos Santos, according to signatures on the court documents that were unsealed. A law enforcement official confirmed to CNN that the guarantors were Santos’ aunt and father, respectively.

Speculation: the money from the Dad and Aunt originated from Santos trying to hide money. Seems like something he'd do.

No money was put up, they just agreed to be responsible for him showing up.

Santos's father and aunt haven't put up any cash or property to secure the bond, according to one of the orders unsealed Thursday. US Magistrate Judge Anne Shields allowed them to be bail sureties anyway because they "agreed to be personally responsible" for Santos.

"As is common in cases where there is neither property nor cash offered to secure a bond, the Court considered whether the Suretors were truly willing to stand up and make themselves responsible for Defendant's compliance with the terms of his release," Shields said in an order unsealed Thursday.

The GOP laundering money through Santos' family members?

That's my bet and Georgie Porgy knew about it which is why he tried to nip the investigation in the bud.

But I thought above we found out there is no money, at least behind the release.

I'm more worried about a legal system that would allow someone charged with such serious crimes to shirk paying for bail, when poor people have to go to prison for very minor offenses because they can't afford to pay even the 10% for the bondsman on a $2,000 bail.

A man who was a paid campaign fundraiser for Rep. George Santos was indicted in New York on federal criminal charges related to his allegedly impersonating a top aide to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy as he solicited donations for Santos.

Have a heart!
He may have lied to Santos when he applied for the job as his campaign fundraiser! :)

It is funny. Just as I was thinking that we hadn't heard anything from or about Santos in a while, this thing about his fundraiser pops up in the news.

CBS News has obtained a secret "vulnerability report" that sounded alarms about Rep. George Santos long before his election. CBS News congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane reports.

WOT? Are you telling us that they knew what a lying POS scum Santos is?

Oh, come now. Would they do that?

They probably assumed that he would blend right in.
In post-truth politics, lying is a feature, not a bug.
Despite all predictions to the contrary, he's still there.

New indictment.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. Rep. George Santos stole the identities of donors to his campaign and then used their credit cards to ring up tens of thousands of dollars in unauthorized charges, according to a new indictment filed Tuesday.

He then wired some of the money to his own personal bank account, prosecutors said, while using the rest to inflate his campaign coffers.

The 23-count indictment replaces one filed in May against the New York Republican charging him with embezzling money from his campaign and lying to Congress about his wealth, among other offenses.

In the updated indictment, prosecutors accuse Santos of charging more than $44,000 to his campaign over a period of months using cards belonging to contributors without their knowledge. In one case, he charged $12,000 to a contributor’s credit card and transferred the “vast majority” of that money into his personal bank account, prosecutors said.

Not sure if it needs it's own thread, but.

US prosecutors have filed an array of criminal counts against embattled Rep George Santos, accusing him of running up multiple charges on the credit cards of campaign donors.

The justice department filed 23 charges against the Republican - including wire fraud and identity theft.

"Santos allegedly led multiple additional fraudulent criminal schemes, lying to the American public in the process," FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge James Smith said in a statement.

"Anyone who attempts to violate the law as part of a political campaign will face punishment in the criminal justice system," he added.

In other news, George Santos has taken up the job of waiter in a nice restaurant, and 100% of the customers who pay with credit cards have become donors to his campaign!

I noticed there's already a Santos thread. I'll ask for this to be folded in or closed.

They've weaponized criminal fraud charges now! You can barely embezzle money at all anymore without being targeted by some woke liberal prosecutor!

Running for reelection

“I’m going to continue to fight this as much as I said in the past. Nothing has changed,” Santos told a small group of reporters in his office on Wednesday morning. “I think I’ve made it clear that I will fight this to prove my innocence. So yeah, I’m pretty much denying every last bit of charges.” CNN also reported that Santos will run for reelection; I vaguely remember his saying that he would not do so when his problems first surfaced, but I could be wrong. His indictment may impact any upcoming vote on house speaker.

Don't you think they'll elect him? He's the right guy for the job. He can present himself as whatever anybody desires a Speaker of the House to be. A true democratic representative.
Besides, "denying every last bit of charges" is what Republicans are all about nowadays, isn't it?!

besides, he has a fool-proof plan to reduce the Deficit - all he needs is your Credit Card.

Deny, deny, deny to the very end.

The evidence against Santos is overwhelming and conclusive. But in all fairness to Santos, so is the evidence against Trump. Trump however isn’t denying the charges. He's saying he as President had a right to do them.

Santos OTOH seems to be denying facts outright.

I am dissaponted, George.
I thought you were a big time con artist, but now you get caught in penny ante crap like this.

Quantity has a quality all its own. No one of Santos' many petty schemes were that impressive, but as a body of work it's an impressive output.

I think he may have never intended to win, just bilk some donors out of their money and then change his name again. Getting elected screwed up his plans.

Yeah, but credit card fraud is really pretty low down on the ciime scale, just alittle above shoplifting.
