George Santos

I'm wondering if anyone is following the saga of George Santos.

CNN Report

NY Post

NY Times

If you haven't followed him he has lied about his work history, he has lied property he owned, he has lied about his education and lastly lied about his Jewish heritage (or lack thereof).

Can anything be done? Will the Republicans do anything?

My guess is he will get a slap on the wrist. I'm not sure if citizens can conduct a recall. I don't know enough about the process.

In full disclosure, I happen to live in his district but did not vote for him.

Already caught lying and committing crimes? If he openly brags about committing sexual assault he could be the 2024 GOP Presidential Nominee.

He vows to be sworn in. And given the slim lead that the GOP has, they won't do anything.

A fraud in the Republican party is pretty much par for the course.

We've been discussing it here: The thread for stupidity from GQP politicians who don't have their own thread

The GOP leadership won't do a damn thing because they need him. Under the Constitution, the House could expel him with a 2/3rds vote but not enough, if any, Republicans would vote to do so. After all, he only 'embellished' his history. It's not like he used a fancy foreign mustard, wore a tan suit, fell off a bike, or ate an ice cream cone in public.

The more I see about him, the more convinced I am that he had no intention of winning. His whole campaign was just a scam to raise clout and money. His big mistake was counting on a competent Democratic Party.

"What happens if the play's a hit?"
"Then you go to jail."
"Oh."
"Once the play's a hit, you have to pay off all the backers, and with so many backers there will never be enough money to go around. You see?"
"Uh huh, uh huh.. So in order for the scheme to work we have to find a sure-fire flop!"

Lots of people seem to be making political runs for the purposes of raising money/attention for themselves. Heck, that was Trumps plan, but fate had other ideas in store."

The more I see about him, the more I question if he isn't just three raccoons in a trench coat.

My impression is that many conservatives think this trolls the libs.

And they will support anything that trolls the libs. So this is great! He tricked the libs (and the conservatives, but they're okay with that because they won). They probably think that this is almost as funny as the time Paul Pelosi's skull got fractured (and they thought that was the funniest thing in recent memory). He'll be seated and become a regular fixture on the right-wing talk circuit. I gather that Gabbard was rather hard on him, but she'll come around to seeing the humor in it and will play along.

At worst, they'll write it off as a practical joke played upon the Democrats. Either way, the arch-conservative MAGA/Q-anon/conspiracy wing of the GOP wins.

Zimmerman, Democrat who ran against George Santos, calls for more investigations into his finances
The Nassau County District Attorney has launched an investigation into Rep.- Elect George Santos. This comes after Tish James -- the New York attorney general -- already said she was looking into Santos. What is undoubtedly of interest to both is how Santos went from having "no assets" and a salary of $55,000, to being worth anywhere between $2.6 to $11 million in the span of two years--plus how he was able to loan his campaign more than $700,000. Robert Zimmerman, the Democrat who ran against George Santos, and Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY),

Maybe the Democrats are bad at marketing but it seems they were unable to get the mainstream media to pay much attention to this given everything else they were paying attention to.

It seems pre-election fact weighing is handled by the electorate. The jurors if his character are the voters. Why should Congress reverse?

You’d think the Republicans would boot the fraud for no other reason than his name being just a smidge away from “George Soros.”

Ever since I read this I now see, for an instant, Santos as Soros in this thread.

It appears that he’s been less than truthful with his funding.

Let me see if I have this right...

This is a Repugnican candidate who lied about his education, lied about his work history, lied about his charities, and lied about his finances. (hmmm.... sounds familiar)

I'm sorry, but this is just "statu normalem" for the modern Repugnican Party.. doesn't even deserve its own thread.

I am assuming that he would need to go through some documentation process when he stands for election. Since it is an election for House Representative, it would be considered federal. Isn't there some rule about lying in federal filings?

Meh! Mere process crime! :rolleyes::(

"9/11 claimed my mother’s life" - George Santos

Complete fiction of course.

What he meant was his mother really liked Cyndi Lauper's 1986 song "911" and listened to it on repeat several times.

Also he's not a fool, he's fool-ish. That makes all the difference!

"9/11 claimed my mother’s life" - George Santos

Complete fiction of course.

Well, ...

In all fairness, George Santos was originally going say that "9/11 took my life, but since I love America so very much, then I decided to come back to life and run for office!".

And the real shame is that he did not use the original line because it would have been so much more honest than the several other lies that he subsequently used.

The guy's clearly a pathological liar. He'll go far in the modern Republican party.

But his lies are just lies. They aren't aggressive, bold as brass accusations that spit in the face of reality. There's no vranyo there.

New word for me. Pretty useful:
Vranyo – “Pioneered by the Soviets and perfected by Putin, this is a special word in Russia which means telling a barefaced lie which you do not expect anyone to believe.” — The Sun, UK

“When I recently opened The New York Times and saw Vladimir Putin … walking out of the Black Sea with two nearly intact ancient amphorae in his hands, the vranyo alarm went off. … The smell of vranyo was so strong I had to put down the paper. … Putin was lying to us, we knew he was lying, he knew we knew he was lying, but he kept lying anyway, and we pretended to believe him.” — Elena Gorokhova in the New York Times, 2011

I use to think that nobody could be more dishonest than Trump.

George Santos looks like he's giving Trump a run for his money.

Is there anything this guy didn’t lie about?

Only if the lies are about hings that could legallly disqualify you from running like age, place of birth, place of residence, etc.
None of Santos lies are of that sort.

Trump's lying is different. It's related to his pathologic narcissism. In Santos' case so far it looks like he has pathological lying as his main personality disorder as opposed to a symptom of another pathology.

Pathological liars tell compulsive lies without a clear motive. This type of lying is different than nonpathological lying, where the lie is often beneficial in some way.
Lying is a common feature of social interactions among humans. This behavior even occurs in some animals, such as monkeys.

Lies often lead to some benefit. For example, a person may lie to avoid social embarrassment. While some people lie more frequently than others, it is not typically a sign of a mental health condition.

Pathological lying is different. It may be a sign of an underlying mental health condition, such as a personality disorder.

In this article, we discuss pathological lying in more detail, including how to recognize it and how to cope with this behavior in others.

And he is not even a clever liar. His lie about his mother was so easily shown up.

As opposed to Trump saying something and the next day asserting that he never said it?

Although I think I see your point. If it were me I’d say “a wounded vet, with tears in his eyes, came to me and said ‘Sir. You may have said untrue things, but we need you in Congress to save our country. If your embellishments are what is required to overcome the blatant Unconstitutional cheating of those Democrats, then we will accept your embellishments.’”
