The all-new "US Politics and coronavirus" thread

Holy ****. At some point earlier I joked about that. I can't believe anyone could be so stupid and hateful and just plain despicable. Oh actually yes I can. I just wish I couldn't.

Probably worth mentioning, the sign directed the phrase specifically at “J.B.” Governor J.B. Pritzker is Jewish.

I read a very interesting profile piece about an ER physician at a hospital in Queens NY. He said the great difficulty is, sometimes people come into the ER who are very sick with this virus. Yet doctors have no effective treatment, they can only treat the symptoms. He said it's like a throwback to the 19th century when doctors did not have any way of curing many diseases and merely made patients comfortable, hoping they could beat the disease on their own.

He said he has admitted highly contagious patients with fever and body pain but no respiratory distress. One case like that, several hours after being admitted a nurse alerted him that the patient had begun to struggle to breathe. He had taken a chest x-ray prior to admitting them and it had been okay. Three or four hours later a second chest x-ray was terrible. The doctor said when Coronavirus takes hold of the lungs, on the x-ray you see 'snow.' He said the lung area is fogged over like steamed up eye glasses. Once a patient gets to that point they usually are not going to live. There's no treatment, no way for doctors to begin to attack the virus and get it out of the lungs. That he has seen this happen over and over. Doctors do not know why the virus attacks some people this way.

This is what the protesters miss. The ones demanding the rest of us resume normal life and 'let the virus run its course.' It can be very deadly, it is highly contagious. It could get out of control and there would be virtually nothing medicine could do to bring it back under control except take the kinds of measures we're already taking. The ones the Re-Open demonstrators are demanding we end.

Dan Patrick, the lt. governor of Texas and a reopen advocate, said recently: "There are more important things than living."

Okay. Can you name a couple, Dan? :(

The Trump administration projects about 3,000 daily deaths by early June.

As President Trump presses for states to reopen their economies, his administration is privately projecting a steady rise in the number of cases and deaths from the coronavirus over the next several weeks, reaching about 3,000 daily deaths on June 1, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times, nearly double from the current level of about 1,750.

Personally, I'd classify them as terrorists. The obvious result of carrying these guns is causing people to fear that they'll be used to shoot someone. Doing so in order to advance a political cause is terrorism. If Michigan's laws allow this, then those laws require change.

Hmm...

Ohio GOP lawmaker says he won’t wear a face mask because God doesn’t wear one

Republican Ohio State Rep. Nino Vitale, who has been a vociferous critic of Republican Gov. Mike DeWine’s stay-at-home orders during the COVID-19 pandemic, believes wearing a mask to slow the spread of the disease would violate his “Judeo-Chrstian Principles.”

In a lengthy Facebook rant flagged by Ohio Capital Journal reporter Tyler Buchanan, Vitale railed against orders to wear face masks when venturing outside, which he claimed violated God’s teaching.

What does Pompeo think? (Or, does Pompeo think?)

“I can tell you that there is a significant amount of evidence that this came from that laboratory in Wuhan,” Pompeo said, when asked about Trump’s claim this week to have seen intelligence confirming the theory that Covid-19 was man-made and did not originate in bats and find its way to humans via a “wet market”, as is generally accepted.

"Pompeo added: “The best experts so far seem to think it was man-made. I have no reason to disbelieve that at this point.”

Then the exchange with This Week host Martha Raddatz got confusing, as to what Pompeo does or does not think. This is from ABC’s transcript:

RADDATZ: Your Office of the [Director of National Intelligence] says the consensus, the scientific consensus [is that the virus] was not man-made or genetically modified.

POMPEO: That’s right. I agree with that. Yeah. I’ve seen their analysis. I’ve seen the summary that you saw that was released publicly. I have no reason to doubt that that is accurate..."

 Perhaps he mis-spoke, and intended to say "The best experts so far seem to think it was NOT man-made."?

There's some reason to believe that even though it's not a man-made virus, it did actually escape from a lab in Wuhan that just happened to be studying this and other strains of coronavirus.

Ouch. [raw story]

On Sunday, Trump told Fox News that the U.S. would have a vaccine available for the country’s population by the end of the year, a timeline that is not shared by the nation’s top health officials.

Attorney Max Kennerly, an outspoken critic of the president, noted on Twitter that Trump’s prior moves on vaccine development don’t stir much confidence, particularly the firing of vaccine expert Dr. Rick Bright in April after the Health and Human Services (HHS) Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) director resisted efforts by Trump to promote untested coronavirus treatments.

“The Trump admin already botched the development and use of viral testing, gave blanket authorization for the use of poorly-performing antibody tests, and recently removed Dr. Bright as head of BARDA at HHS,” tweeted Kennerly. “There’s no limit to how badly they can screw up a vaccine.”

You know what i would love to see?

A vaccine developed outside the United States, and distributed by the WHO. Given all of Trump's "America First" rhetoric, it will be fun to see Trump (or at least his supporters, since Trump has such an ego) humbled with the knowledge that other countries more amiable to the WHO get access to a vaccine while the U.S. does not.

It's rather hard to judge the comparison if we don't know the context. Where and when where these pictures taken? Was there any violence? Were the protesters getting in people's faces and screaming (potentially exposing them to a deadly disease)? I do not see and guns/rifles in these pictures, either.

I was thinking the same.
It IS actually pretty reasonable to think that a virus that came from over 1000 miles away to be primarily studied in a lab in Wuhan (the largest of its kind in all of Asia) and where the researchers ventured to that remote area of infection to collect samples has a connection to a closely related virus infecting Wuhan where they worked. It would be remarkable if there was NO connection.

Not man made, but man 'caused'. Lots of ways it can happen without being some nefarious conspiracy theory. The most recent infections of SARS-1 was from a lab worker.

Did you make the "hmm..." sound while trying to think of a retort before you gave up and posted whataboutisms? I congratulate you for giving it three attempts, though, I like your persistence  .

"someone tweeted it therefore it's credible"
Congresspeople are generally considered to be a step or two more credible than the average joe on the street. You know this.

Maybe the WHO has learned their lesson but they did pretty poorly at the onset of this pandemic. They encouraged to keep trade and travel going into February as China was building their huge pre-fab hospitals and then they refused to even call it a pandemic even as it appeared in 25 countries across 4 continents. The msm like CNN called it that anyway. It was too obvious at that point

I hope they have reshuffled their teams there to be more proactive for purely world health related purposes.

Also, how prevalent are these peoples' demonstrations compared to the demonstrations by the far/alt-right thugs we were discussing before someone helpfully changed the topic ;) ? Not to mention, does Antifa have a kind of chief edgelord (doesn't have to be orange, can be any colour) as President, encouraging their behaviour?

But all these questions would probably ruin the black-and-white "theydoittoo" whataboutism, so best not to ask, probably.
