Trump's US Threat to Greenland (which belongs to Denmark)

It occurs to me that a very similar excuse was used by Hitler when Nazi Germany invaded Denmark on April 9,1940:

In the case of Norway, the excuse wasn't entirely made up:
And of course the British and Americans occupied Iceland rather than risk Germany doing so first. Politically embarrassing. Not exactly a hostile invasion but uninvited and Iceland didn't get a say in the matter.

But here we have the US gaslighting us that unnamed countries are poised to invade Greenland, and this urgent situation has arisen so recently that it got no mention whatever before the election.

It just gets more deranged with each passing day. I wonder what Usha makes of all this. Does she get the feeling she's been carelessly used and abused?
In her position I'd be furious about being used and humiliated like that and I'd made damned sure not to let anyone manoeuvre me into an embarrassing position like that again.
Yesterday, I watched a YouTube video pointing out that an environmentalist book figured prominently in the background of an Usha Vance video,:
JD Vance's Wife CAUGHT With Stunning Anti-MAGA Book In Surprise Video Reveal (The Damage Report on YouTube, Mar 25, 2025 - 10:39 min.)
Vice President JD Vance's wife, Usha Vance, gets caught on camera with a surprising anti-MAGA book in a video she posted online ahead of her trip to Greenland. Sharon Reed and Adrienne Lawrence break it down on The Damage Report.
The book is Al Gore's Earth in the Balance - Ecology and the Human Spirit (Wikipedia). I wouldn't describe it as an "Anti-MAGA Book," but it's no doubt not a book that MAGA would approve of, which leads Sharon Reed and Adrienne Lawrence to speculate that it may be a sign of Usha Vance rebelling against MAGA.

As for being "furious about being used and humiliated like that" by Trump sending her on a 'charm offensive' to Greenland, she may at least be slightly disappointed that the president doesn't even remember her name - or the name of his vicepresident:
Trump about sending Usha Vance to Greenland: "I thought it would be a great, I have great respect for, uh, the wife of our first, uh, of our great vice president. I think she's doing a, she's a brilliant woman, she's a very nice woman, and she loves the concept of Greenland."
In this video, from 8:33 to 9:58:

Trump Officials Defend Dumbest Group Text, Hypocrisy Runs Wild & Vance Disagrees with Daddy Donald (Jimmy Kimmel Live on YouTube, Mar 26, 2025 - 12:52 min.)
Team Trump is under scrutiny after a reporter from the Atlantic was added to a group chat discussing a planned military strike in Yemen, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is busy blaming the reporter, they fired up the fair and balanced right wing news media to cover their tracks, several of the parties who were on the chat got grilled by Democrats this morning during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, Trump claims he is perfectly OK with it and not planning to fire anyone, JD Vance apparently did not agree with Trump’s plan, Daddy Donald decided to send JD ‘s wife Usha to Greenland, Marjorie Taylor Greene is hard at work on issues people really care about, and we celebrate Women’s History Month with help from Donald Trump.
I'm not particularly good at remembering names myself, but even I recall the names of the vicepresident and his wife at this point! 🤣

It did get weird at that time. After being liberated from Nazi France guess right back to imposing it's ownership of Vietnam.

And of course the British and Americans occupied Iceland rather than risk Germany doing so first. Politically embarrassing. Not exactly a hostile invasion but uninvited and Iceland didn't get a say in the matter.
Well, all in all, the British, American and Canadian (!) occupation of Iceland was pretty benign:
Allied occupation of Iceland: Outcome (Wikipedia)
Icelanders were and remain sharply divided about the war and occupation which is sometimes referred to as blessað stríðið or "the Lovely War". Some point to the subsequent economic revival, others to loss of sovereignty and social upheaval. The occupation required the building of a network of roads, hospitals, harbours, airfields and bridges across the country, and this did have enormous positive economic impact.
As John Cleese puts it: What have the Romans ever done for US? (Monty Python on YouTube, Dec 2, 2024 - 16 sec.)

And it also enabled Iceland to declare independence from Denmark!
But, as in most wars, there's also this:
On the other hand, Icelanders severely censured the sexual relationships between troops and local women, which were causing considerable controversy and political turmoil. Women were often accused of prostitution and of being traitors. Two hundred and fifty-five children were born from these liaisons, the ástandsbörn ("children of the situation"). In 1941, the Icelandic Minister of the Judiciary investigated "the Situation" (Ástandið), and the police tracked more than 500 women who had been having sex with the soldiers. Many were upset that the foreign troops were "taking away" women, friends, and family. In 1942 two facilities opened to house such women who slept with the soldiers. Both closed within a year, after investigations determined that most liaisons were consensual. About 332 Icelandic women married foreign soldiers.
As always, even consensual liaisons remain frowned upon when women turn out to have liaised with soldiers who lose a war ...

But here we have the US gaslighting us that unnamed countries are poised to invade Greenland, and this urgent situation has arisen so recently that it got no mention whatever before the election.
Maybe we just haven't heard about it because they forgot to add a journalist to the group chat on Signal when it was discussed.

The difference being Germany was at war with Britain and France and had overrun a number of neutral countries already.

If only there was a monitoring system with the most advanced technology and command and control systems available there.

The visit by people from the Trump administration is now limited to Usha & JD Vance's visit to the Pituffik Space Base far away from Greenlandic towns, and Mike Waltz and Chris Chris Wright won't be going at all.
DR's correspondent describes it as the American response to the defiance and "a small victory for Danish and Greenlandic diplomacy."
"It is no longer as controversial as a visit to Nuuk or Sisimiut would have been."

Korrespondent om ændret amerikansk besøg: En lille sejr for dansk og grønlandsk diplomati (DR.dk, Mar 26, 2025)

However, (mainly conservative) politicians in Denmark disagree. They think it's merely a change of strategy and not a de-escalation. They are also against buying more F-35s - as the Danish minister of defense still intends to do.
(Nobody has mentioned the imaginary F-47 fighter jets.)

Somehow, this one reminds me of that time back in 2020 when Trump 'visited' the bunker under the White House:
JD Vance to visit military base in Greenland to 'check out security' (Financial Times, Mar 26, 2025)
Trump claims he went to bunker for ‘inspection’ amid violent protests (CNN, June 3, 2020)
I doubt that protests in Nuuk and Sisimiut would have been violent, but I also doubt that the Vances would have enjoyed watching footage of the protesters.

Apparently, the dogsled association and Jørgen Boassen didn't send the invitation to the White House:

Morning mail from the USA: At least, J.D. Vance doesn't say anything about buying or taking over Greenland
Now we know who invited Usha Vance
Usha Vance made it sound as if it were the most natural thing in the world that she got the idea to take a little trip to Sisimiut to watch a dogsled race. But it turns out that she had been invited to go, not by the official Greenland, but by the American organization American Daybreak, whose founder, Tom Dans, is working to promote American interests in Greenland.
This is what Dans writes on social media.

Tom Dans has a blue tick on X, obviously. It's a very long tweet! This is just some of it:

So Tom Dans (and 'American Daybreak') is a (?) sponsor of the dogsled race. It would be interesting to know where exactly the money for this comes from. Did he pay for the two planes from the U.S. Air Force to transport the "vehicles" to Greenland?
And now the poor guy doesn't even get to watch the dogsled race he paid for!!!

It's a pity! I am sure that the Greenlandic welcoming committee is disappointed! The DR.dk article has photos of the signs they prepared:

There was also the expense of the 100 or so Danish police flown in to keep public order.

.

I doubt that's something USAID will pay for.
As for the Danish police, it seems that all they got to do in Nuuk was to watch the Hercules planes land and take off.

Trump: We have to convince the Greenlanders
In the interview with podcaster Vince Coglianese, Donald Trump is asked if he thinks the Greenlandic people want to become Americans.
- I don't know. I don't think they are unwilling. But we have to do it. We have to convince them.
- We have to get that piece of land, because it is not possible to defend a large part of the Earth without it. So we have to get it, and I think we will get it, he says.
All political parties in the newly elected Greenlandic parliament have denied having any desire to become part of the United States.

If somebody tried to actually inform this guy about reality, it might help a lot, but he doesn't want them to. He'll probably fire them if they try:
'I can assure you, Sir, that the people of Greenland love you! They love everything about you, and there's nothing they desire more than to become Americans and serve you. How could they not?!'

- Vi er nødt til at have Grønland (we have to have it, red.), siger han.
Det handler igen om at kunne forsvare USA og det internationale samfund.
- Jeg hader at skulle sige det på den måde, men vi er nødt til at have det.
Trump talks about Greenland trip: We have to have Greenland
In an interview with podcaster Vince Coglianese, Donald Trump says that the plan for Vice President Vance's trip to Greenland later this week is to "let them know that we need Greenland".
- We have to have it [i.e. Greenland], he says.
It's again about being able to defend the United States and the international community.
- I hate to put it this way, but we have to have it.

The only saving grace here is that he only wants to go down in history as like an important president who was known for radicallly increasing the size of the US, and renaming bodies of water and stuff.

He has no real goal other than inflating his ego, so he'll knock it off when he has to, and go on to some other ego inflating bull ◊◊◊◊ that he will also fail at. The next administration will have its EO work cut out for them, repealing his EOs and erasing as much as we can of this administration.

He might be content with becoming the director of the Kennedy Center for life. (It can't be awfully long now.)
Then he can have it stage his favourite musicals, Evita, Cats and Phantom of the Opera, all year round, except December. For that one month of the year, they will have somebody string the songs from his rally in Oaks, Pennsylvania, together and turn them into a musical: I Wish I Was in Dixie, Time to Say Goodbye, YMCA, Hallelujah, Rich Men North of Richmond ...
The Sound of the Music
is out of the question; the Nazis are the bad guys! There are too many transvestites in Rocky Horror Picture Show and too many Puerto Ricans in West Side Story.
Trump's bizarre music session reignites questions about his mental acuity (NBC News, Oct 15, 2024)
As the grand finale, they can have Kristi Noem kill a puppy on stage. It will be sold out every night.

I never though I would be hoping the US military stages a coup against the President.........
