Trump's US Threat to Greenland (which belongs to Denmark)

JD Vance's Trip to Greenland Is a Strong Smart Move (RealClearPolitics, Mar 28, 2025)
I don't know how much will be lost in translation, but this is what the article by conservative commentator Ned Ryun in RealClearPolitics says, according to DR.dk:
- Desværre kommer besøget også lige efter en grim, uærlig konflikt, som blev initieret af Danmark, der – efter at have fået dårlig presse efter årtiers mishandling af det grønlandske folk – afleder opmærksomheden med angreb på andendamen.
- Unfortunately, the visit follows immediately after an ugly, dishonest conflict initiated by Denmark, who - following bad press after decades of abuse of the people of Greenland - diverts attention by attacking the Second Lady.

We do need Greenland. We need them to be a friendly sovereign neighbor. I very rarely threaten my next door neighbors on my street that they need to give their property to me for my benefit. It's just rude.

Why do you hate America?

Greenland Tourism Business Accepts, Then Declines Usha Vance Visit (Newsweek, Mar 26, 2025)
Tupilak Travel said that the U.S. Consulate had called on Monday to ask if Usha Vance could visit their store on Friday.
"When the U.S. consulate called yesterday and asked if the wife of the American vice president, Usha Vance, could visit our store on Friday, we replied that she would be welcome. Everyone is welcome in the store," the company wrote in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.
But it added: "After further consideration, however, we have now informed the consulate that we do not want her to visit, as we cannot accept the underlying agenda and do not want to be part of the press show that will certainly follow."

Usha Vance Greenland Plans Changed After People Refused to Meet Her: Report (Newsweek, Mar 28, 2025)

Had a glance at some of the remarks made by the sofa king, and as per usual they made no sense. Whining about China showing interest in Greenland is ignoring that they were pretty much invited by a previous Greenlandic government, who hoped to leverage a rare earths boom into independence. Whining about Denmark having the US pick up the tab for security ignores that it's been in US interests to have a military presence in Greenland to begin with. And so on, and so on...

Why no one wants to meet US Vice President Vance in Greenland (DW News on YouTube, Mar 28, 2025 - 10:20 min.)
Vice President Vance is on his way to visit an American base in Greenland in a one-day trip that was scaled back after an uproar among Greenlanders and Danes. President Trump has repeatedly said the US needs control of the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
Markus Valentin from the Greenlandic Broadcasting Corporation joined DW to explain more about how the Vances' trip is being received in Greenland. He told us that efforts by the Americans to arrange visits with locals in advance had been unsuccesful.

I think I understand why Tom Dans, American Daybreak, decided to leave Greenland a couple of days ago.
Jørgen Boassen has also gone quiet ...

Vance: "The president has said clearly he doesn't think that military force is going to be necessary, but he absolutely believes that Greenland is an important part of the security not just of the US but of the world and of course the people of Greenland too ... this has to happen."

America stands with Greenland apparently

@JDVance

Usha and I are on our way home from an incredible journey to Greenland. We can't wait to come back again soon.
America stands with Greenland!

Greenland does not have to be part of the USA or an American territory for them to be part of a well managed security apparatus to protect North America.

All this talk about anything beyond that is pretty insane.

I really hope Trump does not push this too far because if he does it may not go well for him. The days of America taking over territory by force because we feel we need it to be part of our greater sphere of influence are over. And I think our generals will make that very clear if they have to.

I am sure he will have a suitable action that shows his heart goes out to them.

From his speech

"What we think is going to happen is that the Greenlanders are going to choose - through self-determination - to become independent of Denmark," the vice-president says, "and then we're going to have conversations with the people of Greenland from there".

He adds: "We do not think military force is ever going to be necessary".

He criticises Denmark, saying the area surrounding the Pituffik Space Base is "less secure" than it was 30-40 years ago.

He says as Russia and China have "taken greater and greater interest in this base", our allies in Europe haven't kept up.

"We know that Russia and China and other nations are taking an interest in Arctic passageways and naval channels," he says, adding that rivals are also pursuing mineral rights in the region.

He continues by saying that if the US does not take an interest in Greenland, other nations will.

He says President Trump is "absolutely serious" about the Arctic and "the security" of the area.

"This is about shipping lanes, energy, fisheries," he says.

"Our message to Denmark is simple, you have not done a good job for the people of Greenland. This is why Trump's policy is what it is."

He adds that Denmark was "under-invested in Greenland's security architecture".
