Trump's Second Term

Columbia University to pay $200m in settlement with Trump administration

Columbia University has agreed to pay $200m (£147m) to President Donald Trump's administration over accusations it failed to protect its Jewish students.

The settlement, which will be paid to the federal government over three years, was announced in a statement by the university and confirmed by the president on social media.

In exchange, the government has agreed to return some of the $400m in federal grants it froze or terminated in March.

Trump posted on Truth Social platform on Wednesday: "Columbia has also committed to ending their ridiculous DEI policies, admitting students based ONLY on MERIT, and protecting the Civil Liberties of their students on campus.

"Numerous other Higher Education Institutions that have hurt so many, and been so unfair and unjust, and have wrongly spent federal money, much of it from our government, are upcoming."

Trump has just announced a 15% tariff deal with Japan. He ◊◊◊◊◊ up yet again.

A 15% tariff will mean products imported to the US from Japan will still be more than competitive. GM for one is apoplectic about this. In return Japan has opened its auto markets to US cars. Guess what idiot, Japan does not want US cars. Why would they when the local product is far more superior.
GM has completely vacated the RHD global market. They simply do both make RHD anymore. They did not think it made economic sense.

What I should have clarified is that GM is concerned that the 15% tariff will leave Japan with a competitive edge against them. As I said, Japan is not interested in US cars, even if LHD models.

I'm trying to figure out how "MERIT" is an acronym for "admit any Donald student who's Daddy is rich enough to buy them a place"

Why would he want to control the borders when his appeal to his support base relies on making a big show of rounding up and deporting "illegals"?
Much the same reasons apply here as when he openly and loudly worked to derail that Republican immigration bill specifically to try to make things worse so he could complain about how bad things are and blame Democrats for not doing enough. Also, how he and the Republican Party promoted human trafficking while also pretending to oppose it with showy, ineffective means and making a big stink about a caricature of it.

No it didn't. Quite the opposite.
From a 2019 Time magazine article:
Mueller found that Trump campaign members Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner met with Russian nationals in Trump Tower in New York June 2016 for the purpose of receiving disparaging information about Clinton as part of “Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump,” according to an email message arranging the meeting...The FBI received information from a foreign government that Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos had told one of its representatives that “the Trump Campaign had received indications from the Russian government that it could assist the Campaign through the anonymous release of information damaging to Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.” Mueller’s report states, “That information prompted the FBI on July 31, 2016, to open an investigation into whether individuals associated with the Trump Campaign were coordinating with the Russian government in its interference activities.” Time article link

A House committee on Wednesday voted to subpoena the Justice Department for files related to the investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as Republican leaders have resisted action on the issue.

Democrats on a subcommittee for the House Oversight panel forced a vote on the subpoena, and three Republicans voted alongside Democratic members. House GOP leaders have opposed a separate measure that would force the Justice Department to release materials on Epstein, and President Trump has urged his supporters to move beyond the issue.

The motion to subpoena the Justice Department, which was offered by Democratic Rep. Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, passed in an 8-2 vote. Republican Reps. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, Scott Perry of Pennsylvania and Brian Jack of Georgia voted in favor.

Republicans amended the subpoena to also include Epstein-related communications between former President Joe Biden, Biden administration officials and the Justice Department.

The subcommittee also approved by voice vote subpoenas for former President Bill Clinton; former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton; former FBI directors James Comey and Robert Mueller; and former attorneys general Loretta Lynch, Eric Holder, Merrick Garland, William Barr, Jeff Sessions and Alberto Gonzales. The motion was introduced by Perry.

I thought Ghouliani was at the meeting as well; maybe I'm remembering a different Russian collusion meeting. The pretense was (wink-wink) Russian "adoption."

Blue state? No assistance for you!

The Trump administration denied a request for disaster assistance for Western Maryland after floods caused damage across the region.

"Based on our review of all the information available, it has been determined that supplemental federal assistance under the Stafford Act is not warranted. Therefore, I must inform you that your request for a major disaster declaration is denied," a letter from FEMA to Gov. Wes Moore read.

The storm turned the streets in the city of Westernport into a raging river when heavy rains caused the Georges Creek to reach near-record levels.

In a statement, Moore said the state will appeal FEMA's decision and seek "all available resources to support the recovery efforts, saying in part:

"I requested federal disaster assistance for Allegany and Garrett counties on June 13. The request followed a swift and comprehensive assessment involving an in-depth review of damage costs, community impact and site visits to secure federal support as quickly as possible. Through the coordinated assessment process, FEMA, the Maryland Department of Emergency Management, and local officials estimated more than $15.8 million in emergency response costs and damage to infrastructure, including more than 200 homes, numerous businesses, roads and bridges, railroads, sewer systems, drinking water, and public utilities.
"These estimates are above and beyond the thresholds for disaster assistance set by FEMA. Historically, if the joint damage assessment process demonstrates eligible costs over and above the county and State indicator, disaster assistance has been awarded by the President. Allegany County's threshold for FEMA Public Assistance is $321,460 and Maryland's is $11,674,953.
"The State of Maryland immediately took action to make funding available directly to residents and businesses to assist with recovery. The Maryland Department of Emergency Management awarded Allegany County $459,375 from the State Disaster Recovery Fund on June 10. An additional $1 million was made available to Allegany and Garrett counties through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. We will continue to stand with our fellow Marylanders in Western Maryland as they rebuild from the damage caused in May."

Yep, ◊◊◊◊ you blue state!
