Merged The Suffering of Anders Breivik

That's not a deterrent.

It deters him now, doesn't it? I don't have any answers as to beyond that.

As I said, I once believed as you, and now I don't. On topic, I don't care about the suffering of Anders Breivik, or Ted Bundy, or Gacy.

I'm saying that Ted Bundy won't kill anyone else ever, being dead and all. I'm also saying that's fine with me.

So not a deterrent then. Life in prison would have had the same effect. Death penalty no deterrent. Care to try again?

If someone hurt my family I'd want to bash their heads in with a rock.
Fair enough, but what we have here is people who want the equivalent of 'bashing someone's head in with a rock' because of something they read in a news article. This goes beyond an understandable outburst of emotion and into psychopath territory.

We think that we are civilized and have empathy for each other, but it doesn't take much to strip away that veneer and reveal the beast in us. Anders Breivik is apparently a 'legitimate' target because he killed a few innocents in a misguided attempt to curb the spread of Islam. Well I can think of a few others who are in that same category - but with a much higher death toll. So when do we get to bash George W Bush's head in with a rock?

I applaud the Norwegians for not giving into their base desires and treating their prisoners humanely. I hope they make sure that Breivik gets treated with the same humanity as their other prisoners. I abhor the news media's transparent attempt to capitalize on our weaknesses and turn us all into bloodthirsty monsters.

Care to try what? Being dead, in the ground, Bundy can't kill anyone.

I dare say you don't know, I don't know, no one knows what might deter a serial/spree killer.

Those that are dead like Bundy can't kill (other inmates, prison guards, innocents in an escape) again and I'm okay with that.

Usually the same fellas who relish hearing of prison rape, or a would-be robber being blown away. I mean really get vicarious enjoyment from hearing of people getting violent comeuppance, like a chemical rush.

I assume it's an overdeveloped version of everyone's natural enjoyment at people being punished for wrongdoing. It also makes me wonder how many people got a high watching public executions.

You have not shown how death was more effective than imprisonment. Death is no better deterrent than imprisonment in your scenario. So death CAN be a deterrent, but so can ARTHRITIS. Is this really the level of argument you want to employ?

When I was 17, I was abducted at knife point in a a case of mistaken identity. With a large deer-skinning knife at my throat, I was informed it would be slit, my body dumped in a Chicago alley. I wasn't at all amused and my escape nothing but dumb luck.

My abductors were the drug-dealing spawn of local wise-guy types and to turn them in would have meant the same fate; but I indeed had a chance at a later date for "violent comeuppance" (sic) but chose not to end the life of the knife wielder, though he was by then a heroin skell and no trouble.

My feelings about murderers are informed by my experience with some who would slit my throat as easily as I type this; as posted above my experience is also informed by a relative who murdered a young woman for spurning his advances.

I have no sympathy for these individuals.

"You are going to kill me, and that will protect society from me. But out there are many, many more people... and you are doing nothing about that." - Ted Bundy

Of course there are others like him; I've run into them. I wish there weren't.

ETA: And the others that are like him, what to do with them? While being interviewed, Jeffrey Dahmer confessed to fantasizing about killing and eating the interviewer.

See, the thing is, I don't care what happens to Bundy, or Gacy, or Breivik. I don't care as long as they don't get to kill anyone ever again.

I get great satisfaction from criminals being harshly punished, it's a pretty common piece of wiring in the brain, especially for men. That doesn't mean I let it cloud my rationality, or control my decisions.

If someone hurt my family I'd want to bash their heads in with a rock. But that's neither here nor there when it comes to what's good for society, or the best way to reduce crime.

It's a 100% guaranteed way to get rid of threats to society like the aforementioned Chikatilo or McVeigh.

@Roger_Ramjet

Why do the likes of Breivik, Ian Watkins, Jeffrey Dahmer etc. deserve to be treated humanely, if they didn't have any consideration for their victims?

We should treat them humanly out of concern for our own humanity. Do you really want society to be at the level of these types?

The whole vibe I'm getting is "kids today, sailor had a portable music device, if he didn't cry he probably would have! The spoiled generation, etc etc".

Once they eliminated flogging the service went to hell.

1) I fail to see how putting them on suicide watch for the rest of their lives in a "clean hell" cell or putting them out of society's misery with a bullet in their head is remotely anywhere near raping babies and bragging about it or blowing up government buildings.

2) Why does it matter that criminals get luxury in prisons and expect the taxpayer to take less money home to pay for it?
