It also works at killing people who've done nothing wrong.
True enough, but still, there are some rabid dogs that should just be put down for society's sake.

It deters him now, doesn't it? I don't have any answers as to beyond that.
As I said, I once believed as you, and now I don't. On topic, I don't care about the suffering of Anders Breivik, or Ted Bundy, or Gacy.
My sentiments exactly.I applaud the Norwegians for not giving into their base desires and treating their prisoners humanely. I hope they make sure that Breivik gets treated with the same humanity as their other prisoners. I abhor the news media's transparent attempt to capitalize on our weaknesses and turn us all into bloodthirsty monsters.
My sentiments exactly.
Darat: we've spent quite a few posts trying to explain to him what "deterrent" means. I don't think he's going to get it.
I, for one, want to think of myself as better than them. Your mileage may vary. Why do the likes of Breivik, Ian Watkins, Jeffrey Dahmer etc. deserve to be treated humanely, if they didn't have any consideration for their victims?
Actually it doesn't as he is dead so doesn't exist so can't be deterred from anything.
Have you considered that the death penalty existed when he was committing his crimes, so in fact the death penalty was not a deterrent for him?
My sentiments exactly.

Being dead, Bundy is prevented from killing anyone. I do not believe that the death penalty in itself is a deterrence in the sense that it makes murderers decide not to murder.de·ter

Why shouldn't a society be allowed to put rabid dogs out of their misery?
Developing a vaccine to prevent rabies has been more effective than hot lead in reducing rabid dogs.
Depersonalizing their victims is something that serial killers do, why do you want society to sink to the level of serial killers?

Let us know when a vaccine has been developed that prevents murder.
Because due process of law determining that someone has forfeited their right to life and giving them a quick and painless execution is SO totally comparable to kidnapping people and torturing them before desecrating their corpses?
When a dog develops rabies, it's usually time to get them put to sleep, or if they start acting out, shoot them.
That said, how do you propose to sell rehabilitative justice in the US/UK/Can/Aus when all it takes for people to really show their opinions is a gruesome murder.
Doubt it all you will, but whenever we hear of innocent people having been kept prisoner for years and years (not just talking about the sexual abuse cases here, but cases in which, say, a woman has been trapped in a basement or apartment for an eternity and forbidden from going outside or contacting the outside world) we react with revolusion. This is because we, as humans, know that freedom is a very, very strong human need, and that restricting freedom of movement has a very strong psychological impact.I highly doubt that putting them on permanent suicide watch in a supermax style cell for the rest of their lives or putting a bullet in the back of their heads for what they've done is comparable to mass murder, or raping children, or kidnapping people, raping them, murdering them and desecrating their corpses.
How is this relevant to the discussionThat said, how do you propose to sell rehabilitative justice in the US/UK/Can/Aus when all it takes for people to really show their opinions is a gruesome murder.

Humans have basic needs, and prisons should make sure these are met.
Good job going to ridiculous extremes with your example, by the way![]()
So if the murders killed their victims quick and painlessly you'd be inclined to give them a break?
Trying to change people's opinions is right out then?
1..
2. Pretty much. You might be running the best marketing campaign for rehabilitative justice as part of an election manifesto, but a gruesome murder that hits the press means you lose badly on that platform.
