London snack shop?
Does anybody have any kind of handle on casualty figures at this point?
I thought the UN stopped counting due to lack of reliable information.
"London snack shop" is the nick name the "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights" has earned while it was quoted over and over again implying that it was some vast organization on the ground, while it is one guy and his secretary working from the UK, with a day job running a snack shop (or a grocery store or something like that). They are still counting and their numbers are as reliable as ever, if not more - because they became less partisan and subsequently less quoted by the corporate press. Maybe I should stop using the name. The UN has never done their own counting, Pillay and her gang just accumulated several countings to come to an inflated number. Other than SOHR, there is the VDC and some other smaller outlets like this, but the complete picture will be left to historians.
Is there any insight in what coalitions currently exist?
The "FSA" has more or less completely disappeared. Some smaller of their subgroups have been rebranded recently as the "Army of Mujahedeen" who are allegedly leading the fight against ISIS. This is hogwash, nobody ever heard of them. Basically there are the two "Al Qaeda" associated groups ISIS and Nusra and the relatively new commando structure of the "Islamic Front" which i've written about above and includes all the major groups that formerly ran under "FSA". A lot of Saudi money helped form it. Not everybody is hardcore Islamist, but the main leaders are. Good recent article about the relations between those groups is here.
So far none of those groups has agreed to participate in the Geneva talks, and the "FSA" would likely be the only one who gets accepted, being the French/Qatar/Western pet army for freedumb and democrazy. But they control zilch on the ground. So the only possibility to have "rebels" with something to negotiate at the table would be to stylize the "Islamic Front" as "moderates" - and get the Saudis to make them participate.
