School shooting Florida

Well, that's mighty interesting.

The article goes on to say the Coral Springs police were so disturbed by the deputies' collective inaction that word of it spread up to the mayor, who had tense words with Sheriff Israel about it in public. It seems odd then that Israel's "investigation" singled out Peterson as being especially derelict.

CNN running it now on their channel.

The Pro-gun people are already looking for ways to paint the Gun-control advocates as being 'dictatorial', I found this article by looking for the source of some claims that a US student had been arrested for joking that the '√' looked like a handgun, thankfully I was able to locate the original article.

n Allen Parish, a teenager found out quickly that any type of joke about guns or shooting will result in swift action.

On Wednesday night, KATC reported that The Allen Parish Sheriff's Department responded to a comment that an Oberlin High School student made about the square root symbol looking like a gun.

Deputies say they searched the teenager's home after a tip came in that he was planning to bring a gun to school on Wednesday spread through social media.

Looks like a bad case of 'pass-the-rumor' but the pro-gun types are picking up on the schools 'updated policy' and running with it.

If an incident like this occurs again, Doucet explained the protocol.
"The first thing we're going to do is remove that student from the premises with proper authority. Then, we're going to have a home visit done by detectives of the sheriff's department, and if no charges are filed, we're going to conduct a threat assessment on the student,” Doucet said.

Here is the original article.

Pictures on the department web site show the officers with semi-autos. U.S. police started moving to Glocks, Sigs etc. decades ago, often with various financial incentives. It would be rare to find a police officer in an urban area packing a .38 revolver today.

The only confirmed used of .38 revolver for a police service firearm i know of is old New York cops ... they are not required to upgrade if they do not want to ... there could be more and I'm no expert ... but that's the only one I know of offhand

Here is a photo of his armor. He told his Instagram buddies that he was buying it and then he did. There are reports saying he wore it during the shooting and then took it off.

That photo made my stomach churn.

You mean "ept" or or competent or something, right? One answer is that the NRA fights all firearms restrictions everywhere. In Florida, cities and counties are forbidden by law to enact firearms rules that are tougher than the very lax state laws. Another is that the manufacture and purchase of firearms is subject to federal law. Background checks are conducted through federal data bases. Firearms are easy to transport across state, let alone city, lines. Firearms sales and firearms lobbying are big national businesses, in many ways beyond the reach of states, again let alone cities.
Yes, why aren't state or localities competent enough to handle their own school security? I'm not sure I follow your logic that since the NRA fights all firearm restrictions everywhere, school safety should be a national priority. Especially when you consider that mass shootings are a minuscule portion of the homicides that occur in the US.

When I was in high school our history Teacher occasionally carried a 9mm Browning High Power on his belt (when he was required to)

He was also the Army Cadet Corps leader, and held Army Reserve Rank of Capitan, when we had high caliber firearms (that meaning non-.22 firearms) being transported to and from the school ... legally someone had to be armed.

We would store the firearms in the school vault and the ammo and breach blocks in a safe on the range ... yeah we also had a rifle range in the basement of the school.

I agree, it will fade away, nothing will change and before the end of March there will be another mass shooting and it will all happen again.

In this I feel it doesn't matter what side of the argument everyone is on ... this is probably the saddest part ... because you are 100% correct :(

Out here in Vegas, I had to bring my kids something a few times. Just walked into the building via the main door, then walked into the office to drop it off. They weren't closed or locked. And the main door opens to a large open area and the cafeteria. It's a little scary, really. If someone just stormed in there at lunchtime, there would literally be hundreds of kids within 50 feet of the door completely exposed.

I went into town today to meet some friends for a coffee.

It was pretty scary. I had to walk about 10 minutes to get there down this narrow street. There were these... vehicles .. blasting past me at almost 30 miles an hour and all that separated me from them was the fact that the area I was walking on was [i/i]six inches[/i] higher than the actual road! six inches!! I swear if I'd stepped off the pavement at the wrong time I'd have been turned into paste. I had to take my mind off things so I spent the walk face-timing Janine with my headphones in. Almost missed Starbucks, you know what she's like, never shuts up.

Anyway I went to the counter and ordered, everyone was sat outside. We were talking about that shooting in the states, you know the one...

Can you believe it, we were in this wide open space. No police, no nothing, anyone could have pulled an AK-15 out of their rucksack and just gone mental. Yeah I head it on the news, the only thing that stops a badguy with a gun is a good guy with a gun! There weren't any good guys in Starbucks, I can tell you.
Not that the police would be much use, they don't even have guns! What if some mental case with AR-47 kicked off. I reckon they should have armed baritsas. Or put a plain clothes policeman on every street corner, one who's armed to the teeth. Reaching for a concealed assault pistol were you? well too late - take some cold hard lead between your eyes...

Oh that was a wallet, you were just trying to pay for your coffee? Carry on...

The presence of law enforcement at a school in noway meets the definition of 'prison.'

We don't have to abandon school resource officers now that we've identified the school to prison pipeline. Awareness is key to changing policies to bring about desired change.

My personal experience with the DARE officer at my school was beneficial. Interacting with law enforcement in a positive setting is a benefit for the community.
The ACLU has been trying to address the school to prison pipeline for quite a while now. It predominantly effects black male teens. Are you a black male?

We need to avoid a thread sidetrack here, so the point I'm making is there will undoubtedly be unintended consequences if armed police in schools are encouraged.

This is one of the reasons Police Presence has been reduced and eliminated in most schools in Toronto ...

.... I have some nieces who are in elementary school and my bother told me they are not allowed to speak even during lunch. He says they are expected to act "like robots." ....
:jaw-dropp

If I were one of the parents with kids in that school I would talk the school superintendent if talking to the school principal didn't result in change. Kids socializing is a big part of what they learn from in school.

Some people feel the "age ghettos" used in modern schooling drastically reduce socialization skills :(

...and let alone how many active shooters there were.

Think Columbine... early reports said there was "a shooter" in the school... turns out there were two. Going in thinking there is only one shooter is one thing, but if it turns out there are two, that becomes way more than double the complexity.
That police didn't enter Columbine for a long time while kids were being shot and dying was criticized in the critical review. It was determined Littleton CO police would change tactics and instead enter the building where a shooter was right away.

Given other officers who arrived on the scene also did not enter the building, I imagine Broward County Sheriffs either didn't have an official active school shooter policy or they were lax about training for it.

Joy Reid just ripped Trump a new one reminding everyone what a coward Cadet Bone Spurs was (she used different words) after playing the clip of Trump calling the SRO a coward who didn't care about the kids. And Trump is so ignorant, those SROs know those kids as much as teachers know them.

Her guest said Broward had a good policy so training may have been lacking. That's the thing I meant about saying in the medical field we rehearse what to do when a patient arrests. If you don't physically rehearse, believe me, you can easily freak out the first time or two your patient codes in front of you. And that's not even a danger to you yourself.

Its making it somewhat more likely that the GOP will lose in the 2018 and 2020 elections. Beyond that, you are correct.

Maybe.

But I think this time it really is different. I don't know why, exactly, but I think this time politicians at least in purple states will have to think twice about their gun control positions. For the last couple of decades, everyone knew that you didn't dare support gun control of any sort outside of very liberal areas, because even though more people were on one side of the issue, there were enough single issue voters that the political calculus was always in favor or opposing gun control.

This time, a bunch of teenagers who had survived, and who buried friends that did not, were in Tallahassee chanting "Vote them out!" Am I being too optimistic this time? I suppose so, but at least this time, I got myself a T-shirt. (I bought a "March for Our Lives" T-shirt at marchforourlives.com. They will only be taking orders for another few hours, although donations are welcome after that.)

Oh for ****'s sake. I know the odds of that school being involved in a shooting are very small. I was just thinking about it in terms of what just happened in Florida.

But thank you so much for the outstanding hyperbole and sarcasm. You snapped me back to my senses.
