They have attorneys supplied by the US Consulate at this point, I'm sure. Fine and a talking to, taking it any farther on the part of Brazilian officials would not be worth it for them.
Oh, you're here! Ready to walk back your corrupt cops looking to screw over nice clean Olympic athletes narrative? Maybe admit that your vehemence and seemingly absolute certainty were misplaced?Who would that be? You?
All four of them already have lawyers according to reports. The two pulled from the plane last night are using the same lawyer. It is the lawyers who are speaking for all of thesr guys now. None of the swimmers are making public statements. You're wrong. What I am saying applies to any legal system.
However, let's assume you are right. If so, then an American's utter ignorance of the Brazillian Judicial System would even be more of an incentive to keep their mouths shut until they can find an attorney - wouldn't it? And this is basically what I've been saying: STFU and get a Lawyer!

It's hilarious to read the words of Lochte's lawyer from yesterday. It appears that Lochte told him the same pile of lies.
Do it only if the DA has offered your lawyer an acceptable deal - and only then.
Apologizing at the request of the Police is an admission of Guilt with no deal included (Police can't make deals - although they will most often lie and say they can).
Again Lawyering 101.
Some sources say that the sentence for lying to police in Rio is 6 months in prison. Other sources say that it is 3 years. Maybe it's a 6 month minimum and a 3 year maximum. I don't know but I've definitely seen both figures.
Worthless wrongness on a stick.Everyone else really, really wanted him guilty of some horrible crime because of some clearly simmering hatred of the man.
This thread is interesting. Some wanted to believe Lochte. Everyone else really, really wanted him guilty of some horrible crime because of some clearly simmering hatred of the man.
Me? I have been spiteful ever since Rio won the games from Chicago. So I really wanted this to be another feather in the cap of "see corrupt IOC!" and as such I will only believe the story is false if the all the swimmers go on camera and say so outside of Brazil.
While you did say this, you also agreed with the drug buy/prostitutes involvement.I hate to say I told you so. But I told you so.
Their story sounded dodgey right from the start.
My suspicion:
They went looking for drugs and/or prostitutes, the deal went bad for one reason or another, and they're using this to "explain" their absence/missing stuff/bruises/whatevs.
Prediction: They got ripped off by hookers and the robbery story was a cover
Note that does not say alcohol.LolSkeptic Ginger said:Because they are athletes at the top of their game. That's not consistent with recreational illegal drug use.
Your joking surely
They obviously done something naughty enough for the judge to give them a warrant
The insistence on here that the cops must be currupt was humorous.
They just did a Bastareaud
[last post]No, my point is Occam's Razor. See my last post. I can't believe people here are that naive about police norms in Latin America.
The looking for drugs or prostitutes makes zero sense. Why would Lochte say anything if they were ripped off looking for drugs?
Apparently some folks here that don't get out of the country much need an education:
An experience with police corruption in Brazil.
I'm not surprised to find that is the norm in Brazil. Maybe the judge is involved in trying to clean things up.
The Rio Times: New Measures Address Police Corruption
Deny it, no. Consider how likely it is, yes, there are lots of people here, including you, who think something else happened despite no logical reason they would have reported the incident.
You can say don't know all you want. I say the most likely thing was corrupt police. I posted evidence police in Rio are corrupt. There is no evidence anything else explains the incident.
Did you read the thread? It seems to me that there were several people who were withholding judgment, as any skeptic should. The first post branching out into wild, insane speculation was from Skeptic Ginger, who wrote the following evidence/sanity-free post:This thread is interesting. Some wanted to believe Lochte. Everyone else really, really wanted him guilty of some horrible crime because of some clearly simmering hatred of the man.
Even after that rant, Travis, the thread really didn't polarize as you would seem to believe.Your thread title is lacking. Could be the corrupt Brazilian legal system is nuttier than the Italian courts. Why would the judge who issued the warrant care? Did they insult the country?
Do they routinely harass people who report crimes? Why would they have made this story up?
That is not an accurate up to date summary of what is being reported. It looks like a Gingerism. In addition, it can be seen as a robbery to pull a gun and demand payment. The security guard denies pulling the gun (why would he need to deny it) while at the police press conference they said he had a gun, and noted it was a legal gun.
So what does the evidence support as most likely now?
Bunch of drunk idiots busted a door, were told to wait for the cops, one was more belligerent (per the news conference) probably Lochte, security guard pulls a gun demanding money or that they wait for the police. Drunk swimmers pay up, no police report is filed. Lochte tells his mom they were robbed at gunpoint, leaves out the fact they busted the door, she posts it on social media, officials in Rio respond.
They paid for the damage. Guard says he didn't pull a gun, but coincidentally, he had a gun. I doubt any more will come of it.
