Apologizing at the request of the Police is an admission of Guilt with no deal included (Police can't make deals - although they will most often lie and say they can).

Some sources say that the sentence for lying to police in Rio is 6 months in prison. Other sources say that it is 3 years. Maybe it's a 6 month minimum and a 3 year maximum. I don't know but I've definitely seen both figures.

My suspicion:
They went looking for drugs and/or prostitutes, the deal went bad for one reason or another, and they're using this to "explain" their absence/missing stuff/bruises/whatevs.

Prediction: They got ripped off by hookers and the robbery story was a cover

Because they are athletes at the top of their game. That's not consistent with recreational illegal drug use.

In addition, it can be seen as a robbery to pull a gun and demand payment. The security guard denies pulling the gun (why would he need to deny it) while at the police press conference they said he had a gun, and noted it was a legal gun.

So what does the evidence support as most likely now?

Bunch of drunk idiots busted a door, were told to wait for the cops, one was more belligerent (per the news conference) probably Lochte, security guard pulls a gun demanding money or that they wait for the police. Drunk swimmers pay up, no police report is filed. Lochte tells his mom they were robbed at gunpoint, leaves out the fact they busted the door, she posts it on social media, officials in Rio respond.

They paid for the damage. Guard says he didn't pull a gun, but coincidentally, he had a gun. I doubt any more will come of it.

Did you read the thread? It seems to me that there were several people who were withholding judgment, as any skeptic should. The first post branching out into wild, insane speculation was from Skeptic Ginger, who wrote the following evidence/sanity-free post:

That is not an accurate up to date summary of what is being reported. It looks like a Gingerism.
