George Santos charged with defrauding campaign donors

Congressman Dan Goldman (D-NY): “For George Santos to have a vote that counts as much as my vote is a travesty and I think that hopefully the Speaker will come around and recognize that that’s the right thing to do.”
George Santos criminally charged by DOJ, calls for McCarthy to remove him from Congress (MSNBC on YouTube, May 9, 2023)

Breaking! Santos has been charged with federal criminal offences.
The details of his indictment are now known. And... its bad. Really bad.

From: CNBC
Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., was charged by federal prosecutors with an array of crimes, including fraud, theft, money laundering and making false statements. Santos was arrested Wednesday morning and is currently in custody... The 13-count indictment alleges Santos spent campaign funds on luxury clothing and car payments, fraudulently received more than $24,000 in unemployment benefits and reported false income and asset data on House disclosure forms....Santos faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for the top charges against him...

7 counts of wire fraud
3 counts of money laundering
1 count of theft of public funds
2 counts of making materially false statements to the House of Representatives

The last one surprised me.

It reads like those are from his required disclosures.

ETA: No I have to take that back. Statements made to the Ethics committee [in their separate probe]. Kind of confusing, making false statements to the Ethics committee but also for lying on his financial disclosures.

No indictment for the saddest of all, the homeless vet's dog which needed cancer treatment so George defrauded him out of $3000 in a GoFundMe scheme.

From the MSN News link in post #723.
Santos was placed under arrest this morning and will be arraigned on the indictment this afternoon. He was placed under arrest on a 13-count, 19-page indictment that outlines three main schemes. If convicted on all counts, he faces up to 20 years in prison -- though it's by no means certain he would serve that much time.
I think this means Santos is probably in a holding cell awaiting arraignment. Yay!

Among the accusations in the charging documents are allegations that Santos applied for unemployment benefits during the pandemic, falsely claiming to have been unemployed since March 2020, according to prosecutors. He was actually being paid a $120,000 salary as regional director of an investment firm at the time, according to prosecutors.
Next to swindling the homeless man with the sick dog out of money raised to pay for veterinarian care, for me this is the scummiest thing Santos has done.

After prison George Santos is going to be a rich man. His story will make millions of dollars as a TV or Hollywood film. I think he may have planned this all along.

I really hope that Republicans keep defending this guy and refuse to call for his resignation and refuse to expel him from the House. It will make for great campaign ads in 2024: "Republicans refuse to condemn criminals among them and provide money launderers and fraudsters with support. Time to vote Blue".

:)

Long Island Republicans have been calling for his resignation all along. However I understand that is not the case nationally.

Calling for his resignation and possibly expelling him would be the honorable and right thing for the Republicans to do.

However these are the same Republicans who felt that only Republican lame duck presidents have the right to nominate a new supreme Court justice but Democrats do not. So I have little hope the Republicans will do the right thing.

But again this could be good for the Democrats chances in 2024.

They can easily discard him now. It isn't like he was ever in rhe good ole boy's club. He'll be their token for keeping their own house clean. He'll be the cudgel they'll use to oust a Dem.

Yeah it makes perfect sense for the Repulicans to cut Santos lose.

Which is exactly why it feels like that's the last thing they are going to do.

Does Santos in Congress make sane, reasonable people angry? Well there you go, discussion over. He's a made man.

New York's revised Son of Sam law allows his victims to sue him if he makes any money from publicizing his crimes. The original version was ruled unconstitutional, but the current version has held up in court so far.

The saddest thing is this obvious fraud won an election despite a local paper nailing him to the wall well before any votes were cast. Good job, centrists.

Oh dear, that's going to come back to bite them.

how? Are Republican voters suddenly going to feel shame? Is someone going to forcibly inject human decency into them? Perhaps someone is infusing the Democratic leadership with spines.

Nope, nothing to do with how Repubs see it. I was hoping the infused spines would result. Right now they look satisfied to sit back and says it's a Kevin McCarthy problem.

Looks like max unemployment payout in New York is $504 per week. So, to draw $24,000, he would have had to been receiving fraudulent unemployment benefits for at least 47 weeks.

We have Republicans on this board. I see they haven't been told what to think yet.

Oh dear, that's going to come back to bite them.

Is it ?

Seems to me that the number one requirement is blind loyalty to your GOP colleagues regardless of their behaviour. The only way they could be damaged is if they actually were critical of him and called for his resignation - that could get you primaries.

Truly God's perfect creation.

Gotta admit, for all the horrors that come with the right wing death spiral our country is on, there are some laughs.

Probably not the best idea to run for Congress, which always draws heightened scrutiny to your person, when you're entire life is just a delicately piled assortment of petty scams.

I have to quit looking at things through a rationality lens.

McCarthy will never ask Santos to resign, the GOP hold on Congress is too slim and it's not just the majority thing, it's also slim margins on votes. Santos votes the way McCarthy wants.

I don't think this will hurt McCarthy if nothing else has until now. Surely EmptyG is a worse embarrassment for the whole GOP.

OTOH, this bodes well for the Democrats taking back the House in 2024.... if they don't blow it. Sigh....

Santos has entered a not guilty plea.

I'm assuming of the "Yeah I did it, whatcha gonna do about it libtards, literally anything?" and then turning around, dropping his pants, and mooning the judge type.

Then I suggest all Republicans follow his brilliant example and get themselves thrown into prison.

On exactly what do you base your claim that centrists are responsible for Santos' election?

Santos called his arrest a witch hunt and says he won't resign and still plans to run for re-election. This guy is delusional.
