The Japanese seemed to have no problem kicking Russia's ass, unlike some European countries. They also didn't give up until an atomic bomb was dropped on them, twice.

I've always thought the Japanese were crazy in an awesome kind of way. They don't seem to know the meaning of "stop".

The Japanese did have a major weakness in attitude. In situations that patience would have yeiled better results they would often attack prematurely because of a strong desire to engage in close quarter or hand to hand combat.

Although not so much in the Island campaigns against the US, their love of envelopement attacks made them fairly predictable once you figured out the pattern. And easy to counter.

Commonwealth troops worked this out during the Malay battles, but infortunately the lack of seasoned soldiers made it hard to exploit the knowledge till later in the war.

17. September:

Heute morgen 4 Uhr sind die Russen nun doch endlich marschiert. Die offizielle Erklärung lautet: zum Schutz der Ukrainer' wind Weißrussen unter voller Wahrung der Neutralität in dem bestehenden Konflikt und weil keine polnische Regierung mehr vorhanden ist; die russische Regierung demnach also an den russisch-polnisch. Nichtangriffspakt nicht mehr gebunden ist.

Finally the Russians invade the eastern half of Poland, supposedly to protect Ukrainians and Belorussians. Insist on remaining 'neutral' in the conflict between Germany and Britain/France. Lame excuse: since there is no Polish government, the Russian-Polish non agression treaty is now null and void.

21. September:

Vorgestern war der feierlicher Einzug in Danzig, und gestern haben uns die Russen zuviel Schererei gemacht. Der Einzug vorgestern in Danzig war fabelhaft. Die schöne Stadt feierlich geschmückt und die Bevölkerung wie verrückt. Ich habe bisher so etwas noch nicht mitgemacht.
