It's the same thing as momma jokes. I can say **** about my mama, but if you do you better run for your mother ****ing life.
Or, you know, people are willing to celebrate people for some things and admonish them for others. I suppose you believe folks should stand by and agree with everything someone says or does if they agree with at least one point that individual makes?
I'd put some eye-rolling smilies in here but I'd crash the forum for as many as I'd need.
This is the phrase political junkies use when they become confused by people who place personal ideals above political affiliations....throw ... under the bus ....

Well, it didn't take long for libs to throw Hitch under the bus after they celebrated him for his waterboarding demonstration. Hitch will now have to answer to Maddow, Valez-Mitchell, Orman and Perez Hilton for this lapse of PC judgement.
Come on. Hitch's indelicate reference to Sykes may be raunchy, but that's what goes on at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. When Perez Hilton called Carrie Prejean a "dumb bitch" and a "****" he wasn't even going for a laugh.
I'm still a fan- not big fan but fan- of Hitchens'. I still like him and still think he's brilliant and a terrific thinker and writer, though he went Michael Richards on someone for 2 seconds. He'll be back on all the talk shows soon enough.
In a way, I like him because he's such an equal opportunity offender, so confrontational and so genuinely doesn't give a flip what anyone thinks. People like him are like the kid who was the biggest troublemaker in school- you admire him for his absolute fearlessness and he does the crazy stuff so you don't have to and can instead live vicariously through him.
Who said threaten?People who can only operate in a politically correct environment let their emotions overwhelm their common sense. How does Hitch's remark threaten any ideal?
But I don't quote Hilton as an expert on...well...anything. Hitchens has done research on, written books about, and spoken on things about which I'd like to think he has some authority. Saying stupid **** lessens his standing, however tenuous that standing may have been in the first place.
Who said threaten?
It didn't. But then, I'm not the one complaining about his comment.Well, how did Hitch's remark effect your ideal in any substantive fashion?
Is this thread going to be the continuation of the "Christopher Hitchens is not a real atheist because he hurt my feelings" saga? Only time will tell.
If using a slang word for lesbian is all it takes to disqualify a polemicist's gravitas then the PC culture has indeed corrupted all common sense. Since you believe that Hitchens standing as an "expert" was always "tenuous," why do you even care about Hitchens stature?
You jumped from "lessen" to "disqualify." Don't put words in my mouth.
And "tenuous" was a bad choice from me. I meant to say that he is considered a lightning rod, and this incident gives his foes ammunition. (Nice mixing of metaphors, don't you think?)
I agree with Hitchens that Wanda Sykes did get it wrong. She had a unique opportunity to poke fun at the most powerful man on the planet, and she decided to take a cheap shot at Rush Limbaugh instead. She was supposed to make light of the President. Limbaugh doesn't deserve the attention.
Hmm... maybe I go to the wrong bars. I can't recall the last time I have seen a fight. But then, I avoid places that cater to pro-sports loving suburbanites.
Try the ones with the "no knives" signs! There's also a couple of pretty neat ones in Red Deer and the 'Hat where life can get interesting in a hurry.
Tell 'em you have proofs devised by Schopenhauer that prove the Rebels or Tigers suck big wang. Pretend to punch numbers into your financial calculator while you're telling them this.
