Merged Trump shot in PA??

I wonder if this will have any effect on Trump's stance on gun control.
If anything, upon obtaining power, he might try to restrict gun ownership of his political opponents.

A good guy with a gun would have put an end to the shooter upon discovery. He wouldn't have been reduced to standing around pointing at the roof.
That was the mistake they made: Too few guns at the rally!
From now on, participation in a Trump rally requires that you are armed.

You're not wrong about gambling culture on the whole but political markets are a little bit different in that they are not attracting your average action bettor who is looking for a quick fix. At least not right now. This market won't be settled for months so the vast majority of the money involved at this point is professional and yes, those people do have more insight than the average person. No one is dropping a substantial amount of money on an investment without having done research and convincing themselves that its a better investment than the stock market for instance. That's not to say all money involved is rational, otherwise there would be no room to profit.

i'd imagine it also attracts it's fair share of people that are misinformed and overly invested in the election, or any number of other reasons. it's not particularly difficult to make a bet on this, online gambling has made the barrier to entry trivial and it's more mainstream than it's ever been.

plus, is that what professionals do? put big money on heavy favorites months out? make knee jerk bets to breaking news?

i don't really view it that much differently that sports betting.

In fairness, police hearing that there was a guy with a rifle on a roof might have assumed it was Secret Service?

And kudos to the SS dude who went from shots fired to locating and killing a gunman in a couple seconds. That's professionalism.

Why?
They have lost their son, and must be in profound shock.
Why not wait for the analysis.

From the AP, via the Los Angeles Times archives:

Oswald’s Brother Feels for Families of the Infamous

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Robert Oswald feels for the families of Timothy J. McVeigh and John W. Hinckley Jr., because he knows what it’s like to have an infamous relative. . . .

“My heart just ached when I saw the father and mother of John Hinckley,” he said, referring to Ronald Reagan’s would-be assassin in 1981. “And you think of what the families of people like Tim McVeigh go through.” McVeigh was sentenced to death for the Oklahoma City bombing. . . .

Robert’s daughter Cathy, 40, remains leery of talk about her uncle.

Twenty-six years ago, a high school history teacher asked Cathy whether she was related to Lee Harvey Oswald. Stunned, she could not make her lips move. She picked up her books and started walking hurriedly for the door.

“Cathy Oswald, I better get you out of my class before you assassinate me,” the teacher said.

“It knocked the air right out of me,” she remembered.

I see New Zealand news teams laughing and joking at this event.
My contempt for them has deepened.

You're winding us up, right? The tape is obviously doctored. And according to Breakfast's FB page, it's only on Monday through Friday, so it hasn't even aired since the assassination attempt. Epic fail.

Who is actually stupid enough to believe this interpretation? Do you actually think assassinations of US citizens are core constitutional functions of the presidency?
The current supreme Court interprets all politically subjective rulings to favour Trump. No one knows what they went do to protect him. The 6th January insurrection is going to be impossible to persecute now.

It doesn't sound unlikely, but can we be sure that it was his actual profile?

No. The first thing that happens after names - correct or not - start making the rounds is that legions of partisans start creating fake social media accounts for the suspect proving that he was definitely an extremist on the other side.

The Repubs are really getting riled up over this.

Perhaps they should think of this like a school shooting, send thoughts and prayers, insist there is no way it could have been stopped and move on.

It's interesting that conservatives now suddenly are on board with and firm believers in stochastic terrorism.

NBC says the dead shooter, 20 yr old Thomas Matthew Crooks, lives just south of Pittsburgh, and according to public records, there is a registered republican with the same name and birthdate in that town. So how does Tump spin that?

He could have been registered republican, so he could vote against Trump in primaries. That says nothing. He also donated few dollars to democrat campaign. But imho the sad fact (for Trump) is it was just a loonie. It's usually the case. No coherent political message. No conspiracy.

The highlighted is key. MAGA base will ignore everything else.

As for the "one-in-a-million shot" thing. Shooting through the earlobe without hitting anything else might have been an incredible shot, especially considering that a head is going to move around a bit even if it looks stationary. It's not like hitting a dime affixed to a stationary target, it's more like hitting a dime dangling from short bit of string that moves a bit in the breeze. That's not really Texas Sharpshooter, it's more like disproving the narrative that this was staged.

You would not have a bunch of people conspiring in a back room, planning all of this out, saying "okay, at 5 minutes into the speech he'll turn his head to the right and you, 20 year old kid, will put a 5.56 round right through the earlobe without hitting anything else". It seems obvious that he was aiming for something else (like the head) and (mostly) missed...unless?

....unless he really missed. From what I understand, a 5.56 round at that range might not make a neat little hole in an earlobe, it might instead blow the whole ear off. I have seen suggested that Trump might instead have been wounded by debris from some other object that got hit. Like maybe a bit of glass from a teleprompter, or a bit of metal from a speaker stand. Or just a bullet fragment resulting from the bullet hitting something else first.

From what I recall of the Las Vegas concert mass shooting, many of the injuries were from from bullet fragments and debris from the bullets hitting stage equipment and other objects.

100 yards, decent scope, AR-15? Those shots very possible and doable. If kid had any experience shooting while laying down.
It's one thing doing this on a shooting range or in your backyard, and another actually assassinating a highly protected person, while being spotted by members of the public, being in a hurry, knowing that your life probably ends any second or you're getting arrested.

I doubt this was staged. However, Trumpers are going to milk it in the same way as if it were. This shooting was a political gift to the Trump party.
I don't know that it will actually move independents. This will catalyze even more violence from the right wing, who are responsible for the vast majority of political violence in the USA>

Thing is, he donated when he was 17, still in school and apparently being a good little award winning student. By the time he was 20, he apparently turned to the vacuous Dark Side. Go back a few more years and he might have ties to Waifu pillows. Kids change rapidly.
