DJIA closes down 2.9%. Worst Christmas-Eve performance in history.
Things are usually pretty quiet in December before the Xmas trade figures emerge; they're regarded as a good proxy for consumer confidence. If those are bad ... well, it won't be good.

The time to go short up to the elbow is when someone announces that "the economic fundamentals are sound". It's the tell of all tells.

I've tried to avoid making comparisons of Trump to the rise of the Nazis in Germany to avoid accusations of hyperbole and Godwinning the thread. But I had my fears nonetheless. Now I am wondering if Trump has skipped over most of those years of actual power the Nazis had in Germany and has jumped to the Hitler's last days in the bunker stage. A dangerous and isolated loon, ranting and raging and apparently believing many of the lies he himself created.
Had Hitler been elected US President in 1932 he'd probably have taken the same short route. Germany provided the levers he needed to take absolute power : the US emphatically does not.

Germany was created in 1871 to Bismarck's design as a highly centralised monarchy administered by a powerful Chancellor, with the merest trappings of regionalism and democracy. The US was created a century earlier on exactly the opposite model.

I have to admit that there is one thing different I see between Trump and Hitler. Even though I am Jewish i must acknowledge that Hitler did not start off stupid. Incredibly evil and loathsome, but not stupid.
Not very bright, but no, not a moron like Trump.

trump tweets

CNN & others within the Fake News Universe were going wild about my signing MAGA hats for our military in Iraq and Germany. If these brave young people ask me to sign their hat, I will sign. Can you imagine my saying NO? We brought or gave NO hats as the Fake News first reported!

This may well be true.

It seems much more likely that he sent them in advance to save time ... and charged for them, because ... he's Trump.

He doesn't have the support to do that. His base is not a powerful majority, but rather a delusional minority.

If you think Blackwater/new name/new name/whatever Prince calls them now is more powerful that the military, I would doubt that judgement. Who else would this private military be and who would arm them?
The States would surely have something to say if these people tried to operate on their territory. And cities, and counties for that matter.
Hitler was able to give the SS (a Party organisation) national police powers because the regions and cities were powerless. It couldn't happen in the US.

Yep. Any day now. The crisis of the moment has been going to take Trump down any day now for... about 3 years now.

Trump's fall seems to always be right around the corner with the same vim and vigor.
Apples and oranges, getting rid of Trump altogether and thwarting his damage.

Throughout the campaign Trump said Mexico was going to pay for the wall.

For a full two years Trump had a GOP House and a GOP Senate. If Trump wanted the wall so bad, why didn't he push this through then?

No, instead he decides to shut down the government just to fight with the Democrats?
Pelosi and Schumer embarrassed Trump. That is what this is about.

Because it makes the Democrats mad.

That's why he's winning. His base didn't elect a good leader or a good person, they elected a troll and he's a master at it.

Trump is never going to lose a meaningful amount of support as long as he gets under the skin of the vague collective of "The Dems/Liberals/the Left" because that's the job he was hired for.

He's doing a great job if you take a step back and realize what both him and his supporters think it is his job to do.

He can do everything wrong. He can make every mistake. He can lie. He can contradict himself. If at the end of the day the "sissy, hybrid driving, latte sipping, big city, coastal elite lefties with their fancy book learning" have steam coming out of their ears, he's winning.

Looking in from outside the USA, this is exactly how it seems to me. His supporters simply don't care what happens to the US economy, it's international relationships or to the country itself. All they care about is that Trump is sticking it to the "libs".

Running ads pointing out Trumps lies or illegal activity is pointless. It wont sway a single one of them.

What does matter is the size of Trumps actual base. I don't believe every person who voted for him last time is part of that base. Perhaps those actually living in the USA could answer that. What percentage of your country is made up of racist morons?

I agree. Many people voted for Trump who are not part of his base. Many of them will not do so again. I know two people who voted for him but have realized their mistake. They believed he would change from his bombastic "campaign" persona into a serious and dedicated president. They now know that Campaign Donnie is the only Trump.
His base is about 35%. To think that 35% of the country is that stupid/bigoted/racist saddens me but does not surprise me.

But he had an uncle who taught at MIT.

A nephew of a really smart person must therefore be really smart. Take that, skeptics!
Trump has actually made reference to his uncle's "great genes". As I recall, it was when Trump was lecturing people on how strongly bad the nuclear is, people just don't appreciate it, you know.

Yeah, but how many would let you back? :D

True story - there is still a well-viewed video of yours truly in the midst of a ... erm ... street art installation in a Central European capital city. I ended up hiding out in a tattoo parlor and then skedaddled the next day. Haven’t been back there since.

....He might as well be claiming the counter receipts for all Mexican restaurants in the country claiming that The Wall made it possible for their profits this year.
<As Dump> It's not "The Wall" from now on. It's just Wall. You should know better. Sad!</As Dump>
In fact, in his tweets he now calls it Wall. Stoopid!
