Clinton managed to avoid what I was most concerned that she might do, which is go into one of her shrill irritated tirades when challenged. The worst thing I recall right now is hitting the thing about Trump's tax records a bit too hard because bringing up the subject of hiding misdeeds opens her up for another return hit about deleted email. But Trump then missed that opportunity anyway.

Captain Swoop's thread is a duplicate of mine on the same topic, and should be merged according to the usual practice (which would likely leave my superior poll, with is an extra benefit). If this doesn't happen, after the event you'll all be sorry about it, mark my words, saying that my framing was obviously the better one.

Told you so (I even fell asleep).

First of all, what exactly do you mean by "won"? I ask this in all honesty. How do you win a debate? What's there to win?

It seems to me, every debate works the same way: Two people stand up and each one of them speaks. The other one refutes what the other said by saying "That's not true". End of the debate.

Now, if by "win" you mean "who seemed more confident", the answer is obviously Trump. But that's what you would expect from a bully who is actually convinced of the lies and outrageous things he says: Overconfidence.

If by "win" you mean "who said the least number of lies", I think it may be Clinton. At least, according to this Fact Check Analysis
... unfortunately, I'm sure most Trump supporters will never read this or any analysis that comes out, as they don't give a **** about facts. They just like to watch their leader babble stuff with lots of confidence. So then... Trump wins again.

You win a debate by being the more convincing. Ever had one in school ? It does not mean you are factually correct. In fact i was in quite a few debate where I was trounced despite having evidence and science behind me, because I sucked at rhetoric and the other person debating had a dazzling charisma.

But even by that standard Trump lost.

IMO, Hillary showed that Trump simply can't get under her skin. She laughed everything off while he gnashed teeth. I wonder if that impression is widely shared.

Hillary has said she doesn't care what Donald says about her. I think it is clear that she is telling the truth about that. And after all Donald is a idiotic pathological liar who has no idea what he is is talking about. Why would she care?

My Google-Fu must be weak. I'm trying to find out which candidate spent more time speaking. A word count would also be nice.

Here's why internet polls are b.s.

The Conservative Tree House puts up a list of all the polls you can go vote in as to who won. And it's probably being passed around the right wing blogosphere... and every single poll says Trump Won. :eye-poppi

Even Politico, who have a decided anti-GOP base shows Trump won something like 75/25??!! I'd guess the cons in the tree house particularly targeted that one.

Look at the body language after the debate. Bill and Hill working the crowd, Trump getting away from there as soon as he could. When you see the footage of them leaving the building Bill and Hill are chatting and smiling and the Trump crowd is rather dour looking.

But look to the conservatives to start touting the results of the post-debate polls. To a man/woman, not one Trump spokesliar has said he won. By tomorrow they'll all be explaining how he did, pretending that the wakes they've been holding on national television tonight didn't take place.

I'm not so sure. I think a lot of people will have judged how each candidate did against their expectations for that candidate as opposed to how they did in relationship to the other candidate.

Hillary was composed, presidential, in full command of the facts but at times slightly dry. This means she performed in line with expectations and those who thought that her blinking was excessive may think that she marginally failed to meet expectations.

Trump lied, Gish-galloped, was volatile and failed to really get his point across but because he (a) turned up and (b) didn't punch Hillary or soil himself - he far exceeded expectations.

By that measure Trump "won" and that's perhaps what those polls show.

Trump won by getting most people to think he lost?

A clip of Newt Gingrich was just played on the BBC where he (unsurprisingly) claimed that Trump won the debate with a clear margin on most points.
