Trump's US Threat to Greenland (which belongs to Denmark)

American troops shout "USA USA" at Vance's press conference in Greenland.

As I understand it, the US military presence on Greenland is Air Force, operating DEW stations in the north. They have pale grey camos.

So this lot of boring hup-hups could have been "specially imported" on the same plane as the veep to put on this show for the media. Perhaps they are part of his security detail?

Also, they have absolutely ZERO idea how off-putting and repulsive this sort of thing looks to non-USAians, and to many Americans too. It's the opposite of "winning hearts and minds"...how to lose friends and influence people?

I would be interesting to hear how the Japanese respond to this. I haven't seen anything.

When the U.S. takes over Greenland, who is going to handle the security of Greenland? The answer is that the U.S. is doing it.

With the base agreement from 1953 the U.S. is allowed to build as many bases all over Greenland as they want, so even today they have exactly the same possibilities to make Greenland secure as they have if they take over Greenland.

I was surprised to learn that the U.S. had a system of radar stations in the north of Greenland that was taken down after the end of the Cold War, and there was also a fighter squadron based in Thule (now Pituffik). The reason why Greenland is not “secure” is that the U.S. itself has scaled back its presence.

The only difference for the U.S. between owning and not owning Greenland is the possibility of mining in Greenland. However, I am sure that U.S. companies can get the mining rights if they pay more for it than China or Australia (the countries that have shown interests so far). The only problem is if they want to mine where the Greenlanders do not want it, but we are assured that the U.S. would not do anything against the wishes of the local population, right?

Whatever happens, Trump is dancing to Putin's tune on this (Pootie wants sea access rights for Russian subs), and Trump wants his cut of the profits.

Yeah, but without annexation he cannot rename the territory "Ivankaland"

The area surrounding the base is a rocky treeless desert. If someone's going to attack, they'll see them coming a mile off.
The Greenlanders haven't seen anything at all coming, according to Qupanuk, whom I've mentioned before. I don't know what it is they have seen at the Space Base.
As for the headline, remember that Qupanuk has always been adamant that Greenland should become independent from Denmark, the sooner the better. She is a member of Greenland's Independence Party, Qulleq (Wiki), and she is pretty unhappy with the recent election results (Wiki) where her party didn't get enough votes for a seat in parliament. In the polls (Wiki), they got only 1.1%; there are 31 seats in Greenland's parliament. They would have stood a much better chance of getting a seat (or even seats) without the U.S. interference.
‘He sounds like another colonizer’: Greenlander on JD Vance's visit | Hanomansing Tonight (CBS News, Mar 29, 2025 - 5:37 min.)
U.S. Vice-President JD Vance was in Greenland on Friday, slamming Denmark for not doing a good job in keeping its semi-autonomous territory safe. But as Greenland content creator Qupanuk Olsen explains, many Greenlanders did not roll out the red carpet for Vance.
Qupanuk: They keep saying that there are Chinese and Russian vessels around Greenland, but we have never ever seen them, unfortunately.
As for the Chinese and Russian ships that Trump and Vance keep referring to, it has everything to do with MAGA's desire to own Greenland, but it has nothing at all to do with national or international security.

I'll get back to this, but in the meantime consider this: What do the Arctic region and the Panama Canal have in common? Only one thing, right?!
Russian and Chinese ships in the Panama Canal don't threaten the national security of the USA any more than Russian and Chinese ships in the Arctic. And they sure as hell don't threaten the security interests of Panama or Greenland. Trump's USA is the only one to do that.

Have the Greenlanders jailed and/or expelled the White House invaders yet?
They picked up all their vehicles and other stuff a couple of days ago. I don't think the Vances were at the Pituffik Space Base for more than an hour or two. There aren't enough Greenlanders and Danes at the base to kick any Americans out, and I assume they're quite happy with their jobs. There are only about 150 people at the base, Americans, Greenlanders and Danes:
