Coincidentally I was just listening to a fascinating In Our Time episode on the Spanish American War, and they discussed how the US had long considered Spain's decline would eventually mean Cuba becoming a US state. Opposition to the US annexing Cuba was partly by principled opponents of becoming another imperial power and partly racists rejecting bringing more non-white people into the US.

That was an excellent episode. I was aware of the story from having read a lot of Spanish history books, but I’d never thought about the USA’s geopolitical considerations.

What I don't understand is, why didn't the contractor know this was going to happen? I get that money talks but your business is going to get international recognition from this, whether good or bad. Why wouldn't you either a) not take a job you can't properly do or b) make sure you have a complete understanding of the project at hand.

Now you're going to make your business the laughing stock of the global community because you got hand picked by Trump's cronies. The business literally bit off more than it can chew and, despite getting a larger payday than originally planned, will undoubtedly cost this company money in the form of reputation loss.
