There is a downside for the GOP to this gerrymandering out black districts. Merging these large, strong, city-bound Democrat regions into rural GOP districts severely dilutes the ratio of GOP voters in the new districts. By the numbers of voters, the Democrats may come close to outnumbering the GOP in the new maps. So a strong Democrat turnout could actually turn what was a strong GOP district blue, in each of the gerrymandered districts. Result: instead of a couple of Democrat districts and more GOP ones, the majority may be Democrat. The law of inverse results applies.

If Venezuela were to become the 51st state, as Trump's trolling suggests, its population would be greater than all but two states of the United States (California and (maybe) Texas), and it would be given approximately 35 seats in the US House of Representatives. Those 35 seats would have to be taken away from many of the extant 50 states.

I am not entirely sure the redistricting can be done in time for the 2026 election, but I suppose the US Supreme Court could delay that election until 2032.

The fundamental strategy when it comes to gerrymandering is to crack and pack, yes. Getting rid of the parts that they had packed previously to safely control the rest in a decidedly disproportionate manner and trying to rely far more or only on cracking is much higher risk/reward, yes, especially given Trump's unpopularity.

Here's a greatly simplified example of a theoretical state. It has one big city of one million people, and the rest is rural with a population of 500,000.

To start, the current electorates are two in the city and five in the country. Each city electorate is 500,000 people and are Democrat, and each rural electorate is 100,000 and GOP. Electorate count: 2 Dems, 5 GOP comfortable majority.

But the GOP want all the electorates because they "deserve" to wipe out the Dems. So they divide the city population evenly among the five rural electorates: 200,000 each. They think there are no seats the Dems can win now. But...!

In each electorate, there are 100,000 GOP voters and 200,000 Dem voters. So if the turnout is good, the Dems can win each seat. Electoral count: 5 Dems, zero GOP. They shoot themselves in the foot multiple times.

Of course, things are usually way more complicated in real life. But dimwits like those in power in the GOP today have demonstrated that, yes indeed, they are that stupid.

No worries. The sane legislatures that did the gerrymandering will claim the right to overturn results they dont like. And SCROTUS will go along with it.
