Trump immigrant family separation policy

Interesting to read articles before the manufactured outrage that was engineered June, 2018. Shockingly "skeptics" fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

And smuggled children are certainly at risk for human trafficking, the United Nations' children's agency UNICEF and World Without Exploitation said in a joint statement.

"Smugglers also take advantage of children and their families by extorting them with threats and false promises," they said.

A recent report from the Cronkite News Service, a student-run news service of Arizona State University, shed the national spotlight on a new immigration problem plaguing the desert border towns of Arizona: so called “rape trees,” trees on the U.S. side of the border littered with women’s undergarments. Mexican drug cartel members and the coyotes, who smuggle immigrants across the border, are believed to rape the women as soon as they enter U.S. territory to instill fear, intimidate and control them. When the coyote-rapists are finished, they hang the women’s panties from the trees as trophies to mark their brutal conquests.

The girl was 14 years old when she was approached by a couple in her hometown of Veracruz with an offer to work in their restaurant in America. After paying about $2,000 to cross the Mexican border, she learned she'd be paying off the debt another way — by becoming a prostitute.

From their home in Veracruz, three brothers, their uncle and other Cadena-Sosa family members recruited women from nearby small towns, often promising them $400 a week (10 times the local salary) in jobs picking fruit, house cleaning or working in restaurants. In a few cases, they even were up front about the prostitution. After crossing into the United States, the women were told the truth about their work, and those who resisted were raped or beaten, according to court records and interviews with the victims conducted by FSU. Most of the money they earned went to the family or to pay off smuggling debts. The women also were charged for food, lingerie and forced abortions, making it hard for them to ever completely clear their debts.

The victims are frequently extorted, assaulted, and trafficked for forced labor and sexual exploitation within the country and in the United States. Some of the immigrants are forced to beg for money on the streets, while others are found in this position after being extorted and deprived from their resources to cross the border. In this dramatic scenario, the increase in trafficking of immigrant children who are captured by the cartels for sexual exploitation, forced labor or used as child soldiers in the drug wars in the country becomes particularly worrisome.

Obama administration placed children with human traffickers, report says

The Obama administration failed to protect thousands of Central American children who have flooded across the U.S. border since 2011, leaving them vulnerable to traffickers and to abuses at the hands of government-approved caretakers, a Senate investigation has found.

The Office of Refugee Resettlement, an agency of the Department of Health and Human Services, failed to do proper background checks of adults who claimed the children, allowed sponsors to take custody of multiple unrelated children, and regularly placed children in homes without visiting the locations, according to a 56-page investigative report released Thursday.

United States Government Accountability Office report in 2015 concluded DHS/CBP is leaving children vulnerable to child trafficking

Recently, the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report regarding the care of unaccompanied migrant children by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The GAO report entitled Unaccompanied Alien Children: Actions Needed to Ensure Children Receive Required Care in DHS Custody, found that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents have not consistently screened unaccompanied Mexican children in their custody for trafficking. Mexican unaccompanied migrant children are particularly vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation as they are often recruited to be drug mules or are fleeing gang recruitment or intimidation. As such, the screening at the U.S./Mexico border is extremely important. The lack of consistent trafficking screening of Mexican unaccompanied migrant children raises concern about the prevalence of trafficking in this population and signals a need for reform.
As reported last year on HTS, unaccompanied migrant children face one of two processes when they arrive in the custody of the US government. Which process an unaccompanied migrant child receives depends on the child’s country of origin. Unaccompanied children from countries other than Mexico or Canada who are apprehended at the border are turned over to the Office of Refugee Resettlement to be either reunited with family members in the United States or placed in foster care while waiting to appear at an immigration hearing and consult with an advocate. These protections increase the likelihood that authorities would discover a child’s viable claim to asylum, as a trafficking victim, or other form of immigration relief.

U.S. placement program failed to protect child migrants from trafficking, Senate panel says

The six-month inquiry found that the government, overwhelmed by the influx of tens of thousands of children crossing the border to flee violence in Central America, failed to conduct the most basic checks on the adults entrusted with caring for the children.

Many adult sponsors didn’t undergo thorough background checks. Government officials didn’t visit homes and in some cases, had no idea that adult sponsors had several unrelated children, a possible sign of human trafficking.

By Jove, you're right,* because I live in the UK, I am unable to understand how a one year old can represent himself in a US immigration hearing, which was the specific case I was commenting on.

Please enlighten me as to the specific details, which make this appropriate.

Sure. You have never seen a Mexican drug cartel member murder someone. You've never had to console a child rape victim who was trafficked by Mexican smugglers known as coyotes. You've never come across dead bodies in the Sonora Desert. You've never intercepted drugs headed towards the US. These things don't concern you because you don't have to deal with them. They do however, concern DHS/CBP/ICE and the current administration. They have to take measures to combat such horrific crimes. The measures they take are not perfect but many are deemed necessary. You have the luxury of not having to deal with Mexican drug cartels, child traffickers, drug smugglers, and illegal border crossers. ICE is actively trying to put a stop to these crimes. You are interested in grandstanding. Glad I can clear that up for you.

What does any of that have to do with a 1 year old representing themselves In an Immigration hearing?

And oh yes, tell me what I’m thinking right now.

A lot. The administration is trying to find a legal solution to the problems previous administrations ignored.

By having a 1 year old represent itself?

The previous administration ignored the problem ... of 1 year olds being denied the right to represent themselves in court?

I used to think discussion in USAPol had been fractured into 'left' and 'right'. More and more I'm thinking it's actually 'partisan' and 'rabid loony', irrespective of left/right alignment.

there's also the lie of 'previous administrations ignored'.

Amazing how the Obama administration both deported people, and their children! And ignored the immigration issue at the same time.

Whatever fits the conservative narrative at the time, I guess.
