So does that make all the killings more palatable? Acceptable? Justified? The same number of people get dead by gun, no matter how you catagorise their deaths.

"About half of the shootings analyzed — 119 — involved at least one death. Among the events, seven killed four or more people."

If someone goes into a school with the intention of shooting one person and they only shoot at that person, that is a shooting. If someone goes into a school and starts shooting at anyone they see, spraying bullets all over the place, it does not matter whether they kill no one, or 4 or more people, that is a mass shooting.

That article is a strange attempt to minimise the problem. Maybe that is a sign of how Americans try to cope with the gun problem, they minimise it.

Assault Weapons and other rifles were responsible for around 3% of all gun deaths in the USA. I guess getting rid of assault-weapons is a false-solution to our problems.

But it also says this:

The remainder of gun homicides and non-negligent manslaughters (36%) involved other kinds of firearms or those classified as “type not stated.”

So you don't know what kind of firearm was involved in more than a third of gun homicides.

There's also the problem, of course, that the term "assault weapon" has a slightly nebulous definition.

Or just tour around with me. I've been here 50 years and not only have I never been in a mass shooting, I don't know anyone who has been involved in one. In fact, I can only think of one person that I've known in my life that's been murdered by a gun and I didn't really "know" her, I went to school with her daughters. Strange considering I've been surrounded by "gun culture" my entire life.

Me too (no hashtag). I don't know anyone who knows anyone who has been killed by a firearm. And I know a number of people who are fervent firearm enthusiasts, and the best firearms museum in Australia is just down the road from here.

I don't know of anyone personally, but I was in the police and there were a few firearms murders. I am proud that of the hundreds of firearm licences I approved, none were used criminally.

The UK firearms licensing systems works incredibly well. All the UK's mass shootings involved legally held guns; Hungerford, Dunblane, Monkseaton, Cumbria and Portsmouth. But they will make up less than 0.001% of the licenced firearms in the UK over the 36 years since Hungerford.

The USA can only dream of having such a successful system.

The British police contain and negotiate, no one gets shot, the situation does not worsen into a mass shooting and the males get 20 months and 7 years (the one who had the gun) in prison.

Thats the one part the US people simply don't 'get'- have effective laws- AND USE THEM...

Many (especially on the right) are super keen to lock people up- except when a gun is involved- then they put them on TV and have them meet with the President at the time...

It is part of the deterrence of the UK (and Australia's) firearms laws- simply HAVING the firearm present (even if it is hidden away in your pocket and never seen or whatever) brings an automatic and severe increase in the penalties at sentencing...

No exceptions... ever...

Very quickly criminals learn that 'carrying' while doing a crime is a really bad idea- and they (for the most part) simply don't...

'Well the sentence would have been two years inside, but you were carrying a pistol in your back pack- so thats an automatic ten years added to your sentence... See you in twelve years...
