Merged Teabagger Candidate Rich Iott is into Nazi Cosplay

So you are seriously suggesting that at each and every WWII recreation, the recreators should be standing up and reciting the atrocities of the unit they are portraying?

I also think it would be plenty sufficient for a historical reenactment group to include the full history on of the website instead of just the shiny heroic version and be willing to make a moral judgement/statement about the group's actions when asked.

This raises an interesting point (which I believe quixotecoyote already made, but I'll reiterate).

On one hand, we're being told these guys are harmless history nerds with the obsessive eye for detail that goes with the territory. On the other hand, they don't tell the truth - or at the very least are misleading - about the actual history they're reenacting.

Are hardcore history buffs not somehow ethically bound to represent history in a complete and factual manner?

And if not - if they can simply portray their version of history - do they cease being actual history buffs and become merely role-playing fantasists?

No, it really wasn't. "The whole bunch of them" referred to Iott's reenactors group. Unless you are a part of that group, in which case may I suggest updating your website and holding a team meeting to clear up a few things.

I'm sorry for the miscommunication.

No worries! I am just relieved I don;t sound like a nazi apologist. :)

If I were a member of this group, I would like to think they would have a better web site in more than one way.

I have dabbled in WWII recreation as an american. I am "german curious" but I doubt that I would play ss. Too controversial. ;)

Actually, I doubt that I will do any more WWII. It was a one-time thing with some buds of mine. Fun, but I miss my medieval stuff too much.

You realize you just refered to the Nazis as the "historical pariah of the day," correct? Was that an unintentional minimization or are you here to play along with Giwer and MaGZ?
Not even a pause in the frothing of the mouth? Here, let me introduce you to certain elements of the English language:

Pariah:

Is there ANYTHING in that statement that denies, handwaves, or attempts to minimize Nazi wrongdoing? Is that statement remotely inaccurate? (And for the record, imbecile: My family is Jewish. I grew up celebrating Hanukkah. I lost huge numbers of relatives to Nazi depredations.)

"Historical pariah of the day" is, in fact, nothing more than a general term that was necessary because I was in fact making a general statement about this sort of guilt-by-not-criticizing-loudly-enough idiocy that is ubiquitous on these supposedly skepticism-based boards. Other "historical pariahs of the day" might include "Stalin, Mao Zedong, Napoleon Bonaparte, the Normans, etc". It is possible, once again, to note something positive about Napoleon - his contribution via the Napoleonic code for instance - without denying or handwaving the thousands upon thousands of lives he destroyed in the name of personal ambition.
You realize that Roman Legion renactment groups are almost all LARPing SCA types, not living history types, right? And the few I've found that are more historical based don't hide the dark side of Roman civilization.
That's called a passing reference. You notice that there are, in contrast to that short paragraph regarding slavery in a long historical description, literally dozens of pages on that site devoted to proper attire? This is the norm for roman reenactment groups...hours (and/or pages) devoted to the proper manner of armor construction but almost nothing regarding the legions' status as one of the primary instruments of roman slavery.

There are vastly greater numbers of references on the Wikings site to Nazi racism/atrocity.

For example, if someone called Al Quaeda the "villian of the day" in a mocking manner and then gave the Romans in same category as a similar example, I'd suggest they were in the frothing loony category. And I bet we can find someone who did just that with the Nazis if we try to read his posts.
Yeah, how DARE one even compare the atrocities of an empire with institutionalized slavery, that slaughtered one in ten of its own soldiers for cowardice, and/or conducted literal mass crucifixion of its enemies to Al Qaeda or the Nazis.

GOPer Slams Cantor For Disowning Him Over Nazi Reenactments

As a Nazi reenactor, Ohio Tea Party Republican congressional candidate Rich Iott has some harsh words for one of those professional politicians who just happens to be a Republican: House Minority Whip Eric Cantor. On CNN this afternoon, Iott, who was recently outed as a Nazi reenactment enthusiast, called Cantor out for repudiating him on Fox News Sunday yesterday. Iott even compared Cantor to a Democrat.

"I think that Representative Cantor did what so many career politicians do," Iott said. "He reacted before he had all the facts. He didn't know the whole story. He didn't understand what historical reenacting is all about, or the education side of it. And he just made a decision without all the facts. My opponent here is cut out of the same cloth. Those are the people who passed the health care bill before they knew what was in it. The same folks who passed the stimulus bill..."

Oh, snap!

Just imagine if a democratic candidate liked to dress up in a Mao suit for his "historical reenactment" hobby. Republicans would never use that to insinuate that he's a communist. Right?

Have any untrue claims been made about Mr. Iott?
This question still stands unanswered.
The implication and/or assumption that Iott's membership in the Wikings constitutes evidence of his holding Nazi racial viewpoints or being a holocaust denier is false. Or some similar character flaw. Iott may well hold these beliefs anyway, but I have yet to see any solid evidence for his holding such viewpoints...despite several attempts to paint him as such:

Now, this guy claims that even though he really enjoyed dressing up like a Nazi and spending his weekends running around in the woods with his other Nazi fantasist buddies, he actually doesn't actually subscribe to the tenets of Nazism.

Okay... well, pardon me while I collect my eyeballs after they fell out of my head from rolling them so hard

Nothing to see here, move along folks.
I think people are missing the full impact of what Iott was doing. This wasn't some random picture from a Halloween party pulled from a Facebook page, or a recreation of the Battle of Normandy. This guy was part of a group that glorified the exploits of the S.S. by putting on their uniforms and pretending to be them.

He's not a Nazi, he just idolizes them.....that's different, right?

Does the likelihood that they would make the reverse (you know what I mean, damn it) any more intellectually honest?

So let's see if I have this straight: No one is allowed to make the assumption or inference that Iott might be a Nazi just because he enjoys pretending to be one and belonged to a group that glorifies their exploits, because there is no explicit proof he actually is a Nazi.

However, you are allowed to make the assumption we think he is a Nazi because you inferred it from our posts, despite the fact that no one has explicitly called him a Nazi.

Puppycow is right. No false claims have been made about Iott. Your evidence that anyone here has claimed he is a Nazi is no more or less valid than the evidence that he actually is a Nazi.

These folks have already made up their mind. Nothing is going to change their opinion.

What opinion is that? That people who falsely portray history can't accurately be called historical reenactors?

No, there's probably not a lot that can be said on that topic that would change my mind.
