Merged Teabagger Candidate Rich Iott is into Nazi Cosplay

I like how, in this election cycle, the definition of "smear campaign" has been broadened to include things a candidate has actually said and done.

"Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms."

Is this supposed to back up your assertion somehow?

It was a link to your posting history. It seems everytime you type the words "Tea Party" it's to vilify them.

I mostly agree with your criticisms of this rather disconcerting populist political movement, but to attack one individual because of his harmless hobby in order to make a political point is pushing it a bit far IMO.

Maybe it's because a political movement that raises thuggish ignorance to a virtue is disgusting?

It's a very different thing to play an SS soldier in a war recreation when you know and admit that you are portraying a Monster than if you try to make excuses for what they did.

That's the whole thing right there. I used to play Axis and Allies. And somebody has to play the Germans. And even the Jewish members of our game group didn't shy away from doing so. But whoever was playing as the Germans, he understood he was playing as the bad guys.

That's what populists do, they appeal to the most common denomitator.

What does that have to do with this man's private use of his time on weekends?

He made known how he spends his private time on a public website and then decided to run for public office.

Tough luck for him, I guess.

See post #172 for why this is not just a harmless hobby.

The article is inane hysteria. Basically says that every single soldier in the german army was shoving jews into ovens and exploring that time of history makes you a nazi. How can there be civil war re-enactments, are they supporting slavery too? How about kid dressing up as a princess at a birthday party, does that support and glorify serfdom, tyranny and divine right?

No, it doesn't. What it says is that the specific S.S. division Iott enjoyed emulating actually did commit wartime atrocities. What it also does is point out the hypocrisy of celebrating war criminals under the guise of "historical reenactment" while conveniently glossing over their actual history.

No, but emulating and celebrating plantation owners while ignoring the atrocities they committed might be.

How about kid dressing up as a princess at a birthday party, does that support and glorify serfdom, tyranny and divine right?

Now that's stretching it a bit, don't you think?

I don't know the guy, and I don't care to. He could be a sweet man or a douchebag, I don't care either way. But I find it gratuitous to attack him because of something he does in his own free time.

X: His reenactment group glorifies Nazis!
O: So if I reenact the Civil War, am I glorifying slavery?
X: If you talk about how great slavery was, yes. His group is glorifying Nazis!
O: So if I reenact the 30 Years War, am I glorifying sectarian violence?
X: If you talk about how great sectarian violence was, yes. His group is glorifying Nazis!
O: So if I play Super Mario Bros., am I glorifying jumping on turtles?
X: If you - wait - what? Look at the website of the man's reenactment group!
O: So if I play chess, am I glorifying white-on-black violence?
X: If you-- *sigh*... yes. Yes, you are.

The issue is not reenactment of WWII, or even portrayal of the bad guys in that reenactment. It's a sympathetic portrayal of the bad guys that whitewashes their crimes and doesn't even acknowledge they're the bad guys.

And Pardalis, if your argument really is that he should be beyond reproach solely because this is something he does in his free time, then you need to be prepared to defend any politician for what they do in their free time. And I don't think your argument would survive that reductio ad absurdum.

A blogger is your evidence that his pastime is dangerous?

It's an argument. An argument is not evidence, nor is it weakened by the fact that it is presented by a blogger.

Around these parts, it's considered preferable to attack the argument rather than the arguer.

Your whole premise that this group glorifies nazis is false.
