A guy who likes to dress up as a Nazi may be "harmless" but I wouldn't vote for him.

Here's what a history professor says about their website:

Christopher Browning, a professor of history at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, said, "It is so unhistorical and so apologetic that you don't know to what degree they've simply caught up innocent war memorabilia enthusiasts who love putting on uniforms."

Here's what a rabbi in the district has to say:

"Any kind of reenactment or glorification of Nazi Germany, to us, would be something unacceptable and certainly in poor taste, if not offensive," he said. "I think the reaction here will be very negative. And not just among the Jewish community, but the broader community."

He wasn't a WWII reenactor - in that he didn't belong to a group that reenacts WWII battles, with some of them as Allied forces and some of them as Nazis - he was part of a group that emulates and celebrates a specific S.S. Panzer division.

Now, this guy claims that even though he really enjoyed dressing up like a Nazi and spending his weekends running around in the woods with his other Nazi fantasist buddies, he actually doesn't actually subscribe to the tenets of Nazism.

Okay... well, pardon me while I collect my eyeballs after they fell out of my head from rolling them so hard.

"Germany," reads the site's history section, "headed a strong movement in Europe to actively campaign (politically and through warfare) against the ideals of Bolshevist Communism. This culminated in 1941, when the German armed forces were pitted against the very home of Bolshevism, Soviet Russia."

With that intro it should come as little surprise that the site also makes little mention of one of the unit's other key roles on the Eastern front: rounding up and murdering eastern European Jews.

In the "History" section of the page, the group allows that the Wiking volunteers were perhaps misguided, viewing the Nazis as the best way to stop Communism from spreading across Europe despite "the true underlying totalitarian (and quite twisted, in most cases) nature" of National Socialism. But in the end, the group says, the Norsemen who fought the Allied troops on the eastern front were "valiant men" who "died defending their respective countries in the name of a better tomorrow."

Nothing to see here, move along folks.

Now, I don't have a history book in front of me, but "the German side of the war"... those were the Nazis, right?

See that doesn't bother me so much. Being interested in Nazis, Stalinists, the Taliban, etc. isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's what TPM talked about regarding the fact that they've sanitized and apologized for them while enacting the Nazi soldier fantasy.

You won't find this on their site:

If I can find this in five minutes when I check to see if this really was a uniquely honorable SS unit, I'm sure they are aware of it, being so interested in the history.

As much as I can understand the notion of respecting the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers, even those who commit atrocities, I don't think elevating those soldiers to heroic status and making a hobby of emulating a fantasy of them speaks well of the people who do it.

Were they Nazis? Nope. I wouldn't worry about it.

These ones pretend to be not just regular German Wehrmact, but Waffen-SS, which are members of the Nazi party.
