Shutdown 2023

I'm not so sure. This doesn't look good for the GOP. I think the nutsos will try again but going into next year's election? I think saner voices will prevail.

I don't think the MAGA people in the House will allow that to happen. Their agenda is not to make a government work, especially if it means compromising with Democrats.

We will probably see the exact same thing in 45 days, and the Republicans will look very stupid.

In the intervening time the House could come up with a number of discrete spending authorization bills or they could devolve into pointless slapfights over the speakership and whatnot. :D

Maybe. But I don't think they will get that far the next time. McCarthy might have learned his lesson. I don't see him being removed as majority leader either. Gaetz and MTG will probably try, but we'll just end up in the same situation before the session. Who else can get the prerequisite votes to take his place? No one on the Freedom Caucus.

I think you mean "prerequisite".

Not forgetting McCathy finally got plenty of Republican support this time.

I am betting on November 14th we will be in the middle of another Shutdown crisis.

The MAGA will be in a rage already. They just lost their first attempt at a takeover. The Republicans have divided into two camps now.

I don't think they were. I think they were elected to scream and throw toddleresque tantrums. They're there to disrupt, ruin, and coat in feces anything and everything. That's what their voters really want: to hurt Daddy Government and Mommy America for not loving them enough! Waaaaaaah!

Though I may be giving their intelligence too much credit.
I'm in this camp. ^

But their fantasy and rationalization means in their minds they imagine a more reasonable narrative.

Britain has been a committed Ally to the United States for almost 100 years before world war II.

.

Are you sure about that?

Up until the 1920s Britain was closely allied with Japan. There were several naval treaties for mutual aid and support in place.
We Never had any similar treaty with the USA and they were seen as a naval threat in the Pacific by Britain.

We have fought together, they have aided us, etc etc. What has Ukraine ever done for the USA?
I'm not saying we should not help them defend themselves against Russia's aggression. But you can only betray someone when there is a relationship of mutual benefit, and honestly they haven't really done anything for us. Just saying.

But again yes we should give them weapons and other aid, and if Russia uses weapons of mass destruction upon them we should fight against Russia on Ukraine side.

Hmmmm. What a dumb question.
I mean, Ukraine before 1991 was a part of the U.S.S.R., so they obviously weren't going to be doing much of anything for the good ol' U.S.A. then...
And up until 2014, they were still under Russian 'control' through what amounted to a puppet government.
So, what could they have done in the past nine years for America the Beautiful that would be enough to warrant our aid now?
I think being a fledgling democracy facing a mortal threat is more than enough, personally.

They have done a lot of stupid things. Delisting Russian from their official languages, discriminating against Russian speakers, honoring veterans of the Galizien SS Unit. Not saying they haven't tried to fix things.

Psst, Stalin refused to work with Liberals in 1933 Germany. Called them "social fascists". Guess who won the day? It wasn't the KPD and SDP.

You do know that he called the SDP "social fascists", a term originally coined by the KPD themselves in their mutual war of destruction with the SPD. And as the KPD were a client party of the USSR by the mid 30's (well its remants), Stalin simply inherited its terminologies.

The reason why the KPD and SPD were both destroyed was because they were more interested in fighting each other than the nazis, despite both parties knowing how bad the nazis were.

Truly there is no beginning to your historical knowledge.

I've seen no evidence that animosity between KPD and SPD was mutual. But I'm willing to read evidence you have.

Completely off topic of course, but WWI started in August, 1914. In 1814 The UK was literally at war with the United States. Britain also leaned toward the Confederacy in the US Civil War.

Back on topic, a better person than I might almost feel sorry for Kevin McCarthy. But I don't!

SOme fireworks in the House tommorow now that Gaetz said he will try to vacate the speakership. Get your popcorn ready.
It has almost no change of suceeding. As commentators are pointing out, Gaetz has become a party of one. Even his fellow Freedom Caucus members think he is an idiot, and if the challenge was serious some other member would have moved it.

GOP now talking about expelling Gaetz.

I love it. :)

I'll believe it when I see it.

AIUI thr GOP House majority is wafer thin. They cannot afford to alienate anyone, even a loony like Gaetz. Better to have him inside the party micturating outwards.
