Shutdown 2023

Gaetz has probably decided that he is going to get kicked eventually - going out in a blaze of glory now is going to serve him well for fundraising later.

McCarthy out. No one seems to know what happens next.
This doesn't bode well for the upcoming shutdown.

(It is of course possible that the House will get its **** together and pass some number of funding bills prior to Nov 17th but don't hold your breath.)

I think a shutdown in mid November is a given at this point.

Probably. :(

And you'll blame the Democrats for not caving in to all the GOPs demands.

The Democrats seem to have finally learned that you don't do deals with people who refuse to negotiate and act in good faith (though I wouldn't put it past them to allow Lucy to pull the football away again - good grief)

So what do you suggest the Democrats do? Let the shutdown go on for months and wreck the US Ecnomy.?
Sooner or later the Dems and the GOP in the House are going to have to deal. Do you deny that?

Dems are well aware that some sort of compromise is inevitable, but there is a critical mass of Republicans who don't. If the Freedumb Caucus insists on things that no Democrat could or should accept (end the Trump criminal cases, vote to Impeach Biden, help Putin conquer Ukraine, ban electric cars and solar panels, etc.), and the rest of the GOP caucus is unwilling to make a deal with Dems for fear of being labeled RINOs, we are stuck.

ETA: At its core it's a hostage situation. The Freedumb Caucus is using their ability to block an all GOP House deal to threaten a shutdown and extract concessions that would be impossible otherwise. If Dems give in, the Freedumbers will do it again and again until the Dems have no choice but to say "no". If it's a choice between a knock-down, drag out political fight, or making a series of painful concessions follwed by a knock-down, drag-out political fight, the choice is obvious.

Problem is if the shutdown happens, and goes on for moet then g a few weeks, the economy will be devastated, and the could pave the way for Trump 2024 and the end of American Democracy, or what amounts to a Civil War.

i guess they could have agreed to the insane budget cuts and devestated the economy that way instead

And you don't care who gets hurt in the meantime.

And the House adjourns for one week, wasting the time gained by the CR to reach a budget deal.Nice.

Seriously Dud, did you take a pessimism pill?

First "America has betrayed Ukraine" and now "we may be headed for Civil War".

What's with all the ridiculous hyperbole lately?

So you think a ecnomic collapse is inevitable no matter what?

well no. since kevin mccarthy had presented no budget to vote on, it was a choice between shutdown or insane budget cuts. i think that with him gone there's a chance someone else can get a bipartisan deal done

Trump-Gaetz 2024??

Trump will never pick a VP that is competition for media face-time. If EmptyG and/or Gaetz are really vying for the VP spot, they are clueless about just how severe Trump's narcissism is.

Have people noticed emptyG in the background whenever she can get near Trump?

Ask Nancy. She'll know what to do. ;)

They might choose to pass those individual budget bills as was suggested by someone else (I'm guessing and have no expertise here), leaving a sort of skeletonized generalized budget left to pass.

They could undertake to publicize in a big giant way just how the GOP has contributed to the budget deficit going back at least to Reagan and his tax cuts, how GW didn't pay for the Iraq war because of his tax cuts and how much Trump's tax cut helped himself and his cronies while adding tremendously to the deficit.

The point being take the wind out of the GOP sails they have been and will be using as their excuse for demanding spending cuts before they will pass any budget.

But the Democrats won't, they never do marketing right. :(
