Presidential Primaries 2012

They would have to claim to be republicans.

I might (not a democrat either, leftist independent). Not much point in confirming O in the democratic caucuses. So why not have some fun and try to spread some chaos in the republican caucuses instead? Get myself a companion who is way more obviously gay than me and get us both buttons that say "BOEHNER!" and try to cause confusion and anger.

Can Democrats vote in the Republican primaries?

Depends on the state. A few states have totally open primaries, where a voter may vote in either the Dem or GOP primary, regardless of party affiliation. In many states, unaffiliated/independent voters may vote in either primary.

Gotta hand it T. Pawlenty. He was able to look at his campaign dispassionately, and see that there was no logic for it to continue to exist. Why was he a dud?

In any case, the former Minn. gov has become the fist dotted candidate to get struck in this cycle ... so a dubious congrats to him!

Maybe he's playing for a VP nod now. By getting out early he doesn't burn any bridges. And he still looks good as a VP choice who is acceptable, but obviously won't overshadow the nominee.

So, after the debate but before the Ames Straw Poll, here's how it stands now:
Perry: 32.1% +1.7%
Romney: 29.6% -2.9%
Palin: 8.1% +1.1%
Paul: 6.1% +3.4%

Huntsman: 6.0% -1.5%
Bachmann: 5.6% -0.6%
Pawlenty: 5.5% -1.5%

Now that markets have had a day or so to digest the results of the Ames Straw Poll, here's how it stands now:

Perry: 37.2% +5.1%
Romney: 30.3% +0.7%
Huntsman: 7.0% +1.0%
Bachmann: 6.9% +1.3%
Palin: 6.5% -1.1%
Paul: 3.6% -2.5%

Pawlenty: Out

So who's the real winner? Perry even though he came in sixth behind Santorum and Cain. Pawlenty is out for coming in a distant third, and Paul is down for coming in a strong second. Not exactly a strong endorsement for putting a lot of resources into trying to win the Ames Straw Poll, is it? None of Perry, Romney or Huntsman tried to win it, and they're all up, at least a little. A lot in Perry's case.

But Perry really hasn't been subjected to scrutiny until now. Once more folks get a load of this story, he may be in trouble. This isn't a new story, but it isn't widely known nationally yet. I just found out about it today, and I think that this could possibly be Perry's biggest Achilles' heel. There's blatant political corruption going on and Perry is at the center of it. Even if it's not corruption (although it sure looks like it), it is central planning, something that republicans are supposed to be against in theory. It'll be tricky for Rick to criticize Obama for corporate bailouts when he's funneling taxpayer money to his cronies. If that's not Big Government, then what is it?

Who says there has to be a why?

Stephen Hayes at The Weekly Standard says that P. Ryan is seriously considering a run for Pres. This would be quite the big event.

P. Ryan highlights:
- Requires staff to read Atlas Shrugged
- Architect of Republican plan to dismantle Medicare

Jonah Goldberg also said that he hoped Ryan would run.
I'd like to run against Ayn Rand.
ETA: Intrade betting is 25% chance he'll run. Seems like a long shot this late in the game.
Labor Day (Sept. 5th) is the conventional wisdom practical deadline to get in.

Yeah, I bet the GOP establishment is experiencing buyer's remorse on R. Perry really fast, since he just claimed that printing money in an election year is treason, and that it'll get you lynched in Texas. Enter the next GWH.

If I was Ryan I'd sit this one out. He's a representative, and they never win. Go for the senate and he's a cert.

Is G. Pataki going to get going with this thing? NY1 (Time-Warner Cable's New York local news channel) is reporting that unnamed sources are saying a decision comes as early as next week. He's not a deeply clownish figure such as the likes of R. Giuliani or S. Palin, so these speculations, unnamed though they be, may bear fruit.

OK, we can forget the P. Ryan juggernaut for now. Strike him out.

If Republicans can't get excited about Tim Pawlenty why would they be interested in Pataki? I'm not buying it.

Like I said, available for a limited time only. That he briefly vaulted into third place in the betting based on a Weekly Standard article saying that he's considering a run says a lot about the Republican field. It is a two-man race and Pataki or Guiliani wouldn't make a difference. They're not what Republicans are looking for. They want Rick Perry but they might settle for Romney if Perry looks unelectable. I don't think that the public knows much about Perry yet, but they will.

Yeah, you're right. Inexplicable. But, I likes me a crowded field. Jump on in Gov Whoozat. The water's warm.
