Merged pray'n for rain in Texas

I think the local tribes still do rain dances here in AZ but I can't recall the last time an elected official decided to try and solve a problem through prayer.

Either texan's aren't praying enough or prayer doesn't work.

So just to review, Perry is an opponent of climate change, which is not the cause of but probably making the fires worse.

He has mentioned seceding from the United States in the past but now seeks federal assistance.

He wants Texas to return to its "normal and robust way of life," which completely ignores the fact Texas has a serious poverty problem on its hands.

And to top it all off his idea of leadership is to pray a problem away.

You know, for expenses plus a nominal fee, I'd be happy to take a camping trip to Texas. I have no doubt that this would trigger record rainfall in short order. :D

I am loathe to give Goodhair an iota of credit, but I'll at least acknowledge his ecumenicism.
"I urge Texans of all faiths and traditions to offer prayers..."

It Texas acknowledging all faiths is including the Catholics. That is only grudgingly done as an empty gesture by politicians to pander to Hispanic voters.

Like I said in the other thread on exactly the same topic--Since there is not a damn thing we can do about the Weather, if it makes various religious sects feel like they are doing something, let 'em have at it. It certainly is not going to hurt anything-or anybody.
It's a traditional way to allow the helpless think that they are being helpful

For a specific disaster like these fires, I agree with you--not helping, but not hurting.

With respect to the larger issue of climate change, however, believing that mumbling up at the sky is a viable way to deal with weather issues does a great deal of harm. Having grown up in the Bible belt, I can tell that there is a non-trivial portion of the right that honestly believe AGW doesn't matter because either Jesus is coming back or that because God gave us dominion over nature, we can't cause it any real harm.

They want to teach this dangerous ******** to our children. They want emissions policies tailored to reflect this supernatural hogwash. It is not harmless.

I have a friend who summons hurricanes every time she plans a pool party and cookout.

We had a "Hurricane Whisperer" that used to show up at our Houston skeptics meetups who claimed the government hired him to keep hurricanes from hitting the US. He's been missing lately. I wonder if he could be persuaded to let a tropical storm through, just to water my lawn.

Apparently God thought they were praying for rain in Chicago...

If it is anything like Australia, a massive flood will be next.
Those areas that burned will certainly be subject to flooding. It's weird--we're on the edge of it, and if the fronts moved just a few feet per hour faster, or the dry line a feet feet per hour slower, we'd be soaked.
Hell--this time last year I was looking for a Gopher Wood supplier--and I have not moved...

Resurrecting this thread with an update--despite Perry's "pray for rain" campaign back in April, it turns out that 2011 was the driest year on record for Texas.

It's rained 57 out of the last 87 days here in Dallas. We may break the record for the wettest May if we get another inch or so of rain.

Ok god...we've had enough! :)
