Phelps Organizing Protest of Obama's Grandmother's FUNERAL

I think one of the few things almost everyone here ever agreed on was that Fred was in a serious state of denial about his own sexuality.

It seems to me the best thing to do is ignore them. The more we pay attention, the more they get what they wanted. They are attention-seekers.

That's why I got so mad when everybody kissed his butt when he won those gold medals. HE ISN'T THAT SPECIAL! PUT HIM IN A POOL WITH A DOLPHIN AND A SHARK AND WE'LL SEE WHO'S BRINGING HOME THE GOLD!

No matter what I think about him and his cult there is no doubt that they know how to get attention focused on them totally out of proportion to any significance they have.

Yeah, but it is not the kind of publicity you want.
The guy and his small group are pariahs. Even the Fundy Christians want nothing to do with him.

I don't wish death or pain on anyone. I wish they would disappear, though.

Like Woody Allen in Oedipus Wrecks: "I love my mother, I just want her to disappear".

Anyway, the best way to fight those guys is to laugh at them.

Wrong Phelps, we're talking Fred, not Micheal.

I still think it's only a matter of time, before Phelps and his ilk pick the wrong funeral to protest, and get their collective behinds kicked...literally.

There is a group that runs interference for families if they are invited to do so. They are the Patriot Guard Riders.

The Patriot Guard Riders is a diverse amalgamation of riders from across the nation. We have one thing in common besides motorcycles. We have an unwavering respect for those who risk their very lives for America’s freedom and security. If you share this respect, please join us.

We don’t care what you ride or if you ride, what your political views are, or whether you’re a hawk or a dove. It is not a requirement that you be a veteran. It doesn't matter where you’re from or what your income is; you don’t even have to ride. The only prerequisite is Respect.

Our main mission is to attend the funeral services of fallen American heroes as invited guests of the family. Each mission we undertake has two basic objectives:

1. Show our sincere respect for our fallen heroes, their families, and their communities.
2. Shield the mourning family and their friends from interruptions created by any protestor or group of protestors.

We accomplish the latter through strictly legal and non-violent means.

To those of you who are currently serving and fighting for the freedoms of others, at home and abroad, please know that we are backing you. We honor and support you with every mission we carry out, and we are praying for a safe return home for all.

Though they focus on military service members, I'm sure they would be happy to send out a roundup email for any family that asked. Toot would more than qualify with her work on the assembly lines in WWII.

Of course, Obama has the Secret Service as someone pointed out, so he might not invite them. But it would be really cool if he did.

OK, I'll say it right now: I hereby volunteer to go to Hawaii for Phelps if he will pay for it.

Granted, my "funeral protests" won't be too effectual, considering that I will spend my time "protesting" over the reef at Two Step on the big island, but heck, I'll do it on his dime.

Why not change the law to allow for discretionary exclusion zones for protests within, say, a mile of funerals. Has this been tried?
(I realise this may prove problematical in heavily built-up areas, hence the discretionary part)

Only a really bad person--like me--could hope that Phelps might be present, and reach for, say, a microphone that the Secret Service could mistake for a weapon...

I am always fascinated, watching the video of the Reagan shooting, at the way that f-in' machine guns materialize out of all these guys' suits. (Nice folding stocks, too.)

So, I know I'm really politically ignorant, but isn't Phelps into Yahweh being homophobic? And if so, why is he protesting an old lady's funeral?

Color me confused, MK

I agree. I don't know why people get so outraged at them? There are mainstream religious sects spreading real prejudice and bigotry all over the world. Sects that even run schools and have a significant political influence. They are the one's to be outraged at.

The Westboro' Baptist church is just a cartoon outfit and best ignored IMO.
