Phelps Organizing Protest of Obama's Grandmother's FUNERAL

It seems to me the best thing to do is ignore them. The more we pay attention, the more they get what they wanted. They are attention-seekers.

Well, at least we know why they didn't pay the lawsuit they've lost; they need all of the cash to go globe-hopping to spread their hate.

(shrug)

Phelps cares for nothing but for getting his name in the news.

The problem is, after he pickets the 143rd funeral, people stop paying attention.

Apparently, picketing funerals of non-celebrities just doesn't cut it any more with media coverage.

No matter what I think about him and his cult there is no doubt that they know how to get attention focused on them totally out of proportion to any significance they have.

I did volunteer work at the Columbine memorial in 1999. Early in the morning, Phelps and his merry gang had staked out a spot where thousands would pass later in the day. They were hurling insults at anyone who walked by.

A few of us decided to send someone back toward the parking lot and tell people just to ignore the protest. Don't argue, don't respond to their insults, just walk past as if they were not even there.

Even the press got the message. Phelps was mentioned in the newspaper, but no photo. If you watched the event on TV, you would not even know that Phelps showed up.

The think I fond funny is the headline of the linked article and by extension this thread. Phelps doesn't "organize" protests. He just tells his family members, "Hey we are going here to be asshats today."

Lawsuit-seekers, you mean. Their goal is to get someone, or some group, so incensed that they attempt or succeed in physical harm or property damage (busting up the signs, transport van, etc) -- at which point they sue everyone within range (including the city, the county, the state, etc.) for seven figures.

Interestingly, they've taken to sending only women and children recently; no adult males at the protests. I suspect this is both a tacit acknowledgement that a jury may not be inclined to rule their way if a battery incident _does_ occur, and an attempt to garner even greater 'victim' status for themselves in the event of something happening.

Phelps' funeral will be the biggest party ever. I hope he dies soon.

Getting the media to ignore them is one thing, but it's too much to expect the mourners at funeral after funeral after funeral to ignore them. He needs to be stopped, period.

He has sent people out here before (I am on Maui), and pretty much everyone locally ignored them. I think they had one media interview that, well, showed just how rational they are. The odd thing about their visit is that it seemed like they brought their own counter-protesters with them. No one out here recognized either of the groups that entered the shouting match against them.

I can't imagine a follow-up visit generating any kind of a local response.

If Obama attends the funeral, there will be Secret Service coverage. Phelps won't be able to get close enough to cause a scene.

Is it evil of me to think that the best thing that could happen to Phelps and his ilk is another Wacco? Honestly, this guy is a walking reason to have Hate Speech laws and a cell door with no key. Locking him up would make the US a better place for all Americans.

NO!

The guy is a walking museum of stupid. Educational, his public ranting is, when objectively considered.

NO! Not a penny of my tax dollars for his room and board.

I feel kind of wrong for thinking it as well.

Honestly though, if I heard that his church burned down with him and all of his inbred followers trapped inside it would probably take me hours to stop laughing.

Either that or Fred Phelps ends up in jail for some reason. And we all know what happens in prison....

What is needed is for someone to do unto him as they done unto Joe McCarthy and call him out, in public, for being a hate-mongering homophobic miscreant. (Now who might he offend by this little action who has a bully pulpit and recognizable oratorical brilliance? Hmmm?)

I agree with Darth. Not a penny of my money to feed and clothe him and his band of merry followers. Take away everything the own to pay off their lawsuit, and let them live off their hatred and see how well-fed they are then.

I don't wish death or pain on anyone. I wish they would disappear, though.

And if one of them is stupid enough to mess with a Secret Service detail, then you know they have a death wish.

The one and only time I can truly wish that the God of the New Testament existed is in imaging Phelps brought up in front of it when he dies.

Well, I'd take the OT version.... pillar of salt, anyone? (In keeping with my modified pacifism, .... as long as he lived through it and wasn't physically harmed.)
