Ed Olympic swimmers may have lied about being robbed

Of course it's possible that story is wrong and it wasn't his mom who was first to go to the press.

I'm not disagreeing that she did it; aside from the usual caveats (new information turns up that we don't presently know about) it seems she did.

I'm just wondering why she did. Anytime I've worked somewhere even remotely newsworthy, it was made very clear to me that talking to reporters was a no-no. I'd assume that the same is true of the US Olympic team.

If a relative on the Olympic team gave me news like that, my reflex would be to keep it quiet on the assumption that the team would prefer they handled press releases.

I don't know that there's evidence she sought out the media. It only takes one bored producer/researcher to call her for background or just a simple quote about her son's performance.

Yeah. I certainly don't think she could be blamed if she were contacted and asked. It would (I think) be odd if she contacted them instead.

But either way, I don't think she can really be blamed for telling people a lie she sincerely believed was true, or the reporters for going with the story. It's on her idiot son.

Indeed.

It's hardly her fault. She was scared for her kid.

According to this article, http://nesn.com/2016/08/did-ryan-lochte-lie-to-his-own-mom-about-being-robbed-at-gunpoint/ it was a fluke on all sides. Lochte had just called and told her when she ran into Ben Way on a shuttle, and when asked why she was shaken/upset, explained that Ryan and the others had been robbed. Then Way tweeted about it.

I don't support Lochte in this (who would?), but I wonder how seriously anyone expects him to take the charges and the demand to appear in a foreign court. Surely he can just ignore the summons (or whatever the term is) and go on with his life without fear of legal consequences.
So long as he has no desire to return for carnival, he should be fine.
Or travels to a country with an extradition agreement with Brazil.

The United States has an extradition treaty with Brazil. I doubt there's a nation in the world that would include filing a false police report as a crime eligible for extradition in their treaties.

There is no way he is going to get jail time
Nope. Because a) he won't be going back to Brazil until all is sorted out, and b) he'll hire a Brazilian lawyer to go to court and plead drunkenness or language problems, make a big donation, and it'll all go away. Along with his endorsements.

Mind you, I can see some new opportunities for endorsements opening up.

"Hi, I'm Ryan Lochte. As you know, some of my choices haven't been all that great lately. But bad choices needn't mean bad consequences. Here at Dewey, Cheetham and Howe, Attorneys at Law, there are a wide range of services on offer to keep you from facing up to the consequences of your actions, from witness decredibilisation, plea bargaining, expert witness coaching, and of course [gentle laugh] the good old tactical charitable donation. And with a payment plan to suit every pocket, there's no reason why you should face the consequences of your bad choices - any more than I did.

"Dewey, Cheetham and Howe. Because not all of your choices have to be bad ones."
