US swimmer Ryan Lochte has been charged with falsely reporting a crime, Rio police said Thursday.

The department's chief has requested a letter be sent to Lochte explaining the legal process related to the charges, according to a statement.

The 12-time Olympic medalist will now be summoned to Rio, according to Tourist Support Special Precinct officials.

Lochte can opt to send a lawyer and does not need to appear in court.

If convicted, Lochte, 32, could face between one to six months in jail, although the judge could choose to levy a fine instead. There would be no negotiations in that case, Clemente Braune, a commissioner with the Special Tourist Police in Rio, said Thursday...

What should have been a minor incident has exploded into a millions-dollar loss. I wonder how his Mom feels. Although I place 100% of the hype and the blame on the media.

Intelligence is largely hereditary, she may not understand what's happening.

Also, didn't she cause all this by issuing a press release? Who the heck hears something--anything-- from their kid and their first response is to alert the press?

I suspect she's as stupid and fame-whorish as her idiot son, and I'm glad they won't add too many undeserved millions to the fortunes they've already acquired.

The media were just reporting it as it happened.

A lawyer will go over and he will probably get a suspended sentence.

I place 100% of the hype and the blame on Ryan Lochte and his mother.

He did the deed, he lied to his mom and his mom went to the media to publicize the story. From what I've seen and read, all the media did was report what the mom told them and then report on the other involved parties responses.

Agree completely. Cops and media share no blame in this. It is all on Lochte. And Mum.

I'm not one to defend the press, which I suspect is far less competent in its job than most professions, but I agree.

I'm not sure how much blame to give his mother, though. I'm not clear on why she'd tell the press anything about her son unless specifically asked (she must know he has publicists who handle that) but it's not like she deliberately misled anyone.

I've been going by this version of the story:
It remains unclear when Lochte told the story to his mother—and no one but them know exactly what she was told—but she became a messenger of the story to the media. The AP reports:

Lochte first lied about the robbery to his mother, Ileana Lochte, who spoke with reporters, the police official said. That led to news coverage of the incident and prompted police attention.

Later on Sunday, Lochte was asked about the story by the Today Show’s Billy Bush.

Of course it's possible that story is wrong and it wasn't his mom who was first to go to the press.
 
I don't support Lochte in this (who would?), but I wonder how seriously anyone expects him to take the charges and the demand to appear in a foreign court. Surely he can just ignore the summons (or whatever the term is) and go on with his life without fear of legal consequences.

So long as he has no desire to return for carnival, he should be fine.

ETA: by fine I mean losing millions of dollars but not his freedom.

It would probably help his image if he did go. Legal consequences are nil- no US legal authority is going to do anything about this.

He should hire a good PR manager, listen to what they say, give them a third of whatever he can scramble from the mess he has made for himself.

He doesn't have to appear. He can send a lawyer.
 
Probably been mentioned before.

Been reading a few headlines and the introductions to stories about this bloke and I had assumed from how he was being described that he was a teenager. It's only tonight I realised the guy is in his thirties!
