New venue for TAM5?

(Psst...perhaps you should tell people why you paid that much.... ;))
Psssst....perhaps it is irrelevant.

Then again, perhaps you are right. I paid that much because I was a very late arrival.

Well, "perhaps" in the sense that no significant part of the attendees are likely to be as late arrivals as me.

You got a point there.

Thanks.

So, now that room prices have been eliminated as a serious source of concern, what other concerns are left?

Greetings,

But the room prices as a "serious concern" have not been eliminated. You simply admitted that your price was too high due to the fact that you were a late arrival. Simply put, there is no place with a wider range of room rates than Las Vegas, especially when you add in all of the other benefits that exist there.

As for other concerns, why haven't you addressed any of the things that I said in my earlier posts?

To refresh your memory, I said:

In order for some other US city to match the price that is possible in Vegas (including airfare, hotel, meals, etc...), the attendees would have to give up a large number of the things that Vegas offers (including tremendous variety in regard to food, entertainment, activities, etc). And do not forget that Vegas also offers connections to some very influential people that assist in many ways with the event.

(Please read that last sentence again. In fact, read it twice if necessary since it was ignored the first time it was posted. And if you do not believe that this is a big deal, who will step up to the plate and replace those "connections"--especially on the financial side of the equation?)

TAM is about what is best for the event, and what is best for JREF. After all, it is the once-a-year fund raising event for the organization. With that said, let those that work so hard to make everything happen decide what is best.

Sure, it is fine to discuss other options, but I believe that the vacation-club attitude is rather self-centered.

Please realize that I understand what you are saying--and I sympathize. However, when it comes to organizing an important event such as TAM, the personal vacation desires of certain individuals are simply not as high on the priority list as other things--such as overall cost, solid business connections, convenience for the organizers, after-hours activities, etc...

To be honest, the most encouraging thing about this poll is that as of the date for this post, there are only a few dozen people that have voted. Considering the size of the crowd at TAM3, I can only assume that most of the attendees simply care more about the event than their own vacation plans.

Keep the change,
Rick

Let us not forget for one moment, that forumites only make up 10% of the attendees at TAM.

... and almost 2/3 of those have already voted (36 out of about 55-60 as I post this), and of those, 2/3 would like to see TAM at another city... for the same price, which is the big stumbling block here.

I´ll be the first to admit that I don´t know a thing about organizing anything more complex than a role-playing session with 4 people. Therefore, if the people in charge of TAM say Vegas offers by far the best price/service/convenience combination of any city, I´ll trust them.

How do people feel about TORONTO?

Cause it's a real possibility.

YES YES YES YES YES! But I think Randi himself isn't fond of Canada.... :(

Toronto is much easier for me than Vegas. And Toronto in January is my kind of weather.

I went there straight after TAM this year. Snow snow snow snow snow snow snow! (starts dancing like Snoopy at suppertime...)

People who talk to me should always keep in mind that saying of Ben Franklin, "Three can keep a secret, if two of them are dead."

No wonder you're so poetic, Merc....you're nuts :) :)
Too true. Actually, I want to add to my above statement. Having read Rick Maue's posts, I think it would, and *should*, take a great deal to move the meeting away from Vegas. My comment on Toronto is not a vote against Vegas, but merely a symptom of my own disease. OTOH, if the reasons for Toronto stacked up...instead of a fire-walk, I'll challenge any and all to a barefoot-through-the-snow walk.

I've never been to Canada - do I need a passport to cross the border?

How about Calgary? (I know I am being selfish here.)
