I followed the events leading up to the invasion very closely. After the invasion, it became obvious, that no one I knew followed the events at all.
I'm not surprised you got these two statements exactly backward.
As I remember, after 9-11, the mindset of the Americans changed. But the mindset of Saddam and his supporters did not. But that is not immediately why we invaded. There were countless UN violations that were passed that were designed to inspect and verify Saddams Iraq. Saddam played cat-and-mouse with the inspectors. Letting them in and then shortly kicking him out.
Read what Hans Blix, the UN inspector in charge wrote
BEFORE the invasion. He stated that the US was invading based on an accounting dispute. At the end of the Iran-Iraq war the UN asked Hussein how many chemical weapons he had left, they were told "approximately 14,000." The UN then supervised, or verified, the destruction of 13,550.
Iraq said they had no more, the US insisted there were 450 unaccounted for. But as Blix pointed out, 13,550 is "approximately 14,000." And as he stated, the Iraqis were playing cat and mouse but there were few other places to hide their weapons and the UN was slowly investigating all of them.
Powel had a point when he said that if some sort of action was not done, the UN would be a pointless body. Their resolutions would not mean anything if Saddam constantly violated them and nothing was done.
Then why didn't the US invade Israel? They had more outstanding UN resolutions than Iraq did. It isn't even close!
And there was a long list of violations.
All based on an accounting disagreement as Blix showed.
You can say that it was illegal because the UN did not approve of the invasion in the end. But prior to that, they did pass virtually countless resolutions that Saddam violated. So one can also look at it another way and say that it was good for the UN that Bush gathered "countries of the willing" who joined the US in the invasion.
You mean "countries of the willingly stupid" don't you. Can you explain how your Secretary of State can stand up in front of the UN and spout refuted lie, after refuted lie as "new intelligence" and not have a single person from any US intelligence agency lose their job? Are you saying "U.S. Intelligence" is an oxymoron?
Here's what Powell had to say about it:
(April 2004) "I looked at the four [sources] that [the CIA] gave me for [the mobile bio-labs], and they stood behind them, ... Now it appears not to be the case that it was that solid. At the time I was preparing the presentation, it was presented to me as being solid."
(2005) "I feel terrible ... [giving the speech] ... It's a blot. I'm the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and [it] will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It's painful now."
Let me ask you this. There were many resolutions that demanded that Saddam allow for inspectors that Saddam violated. Now, after the US invaded, did the UN pass any resolutions saying that the US and other countries were wrong to do the invasion?
The US withdrew resolution 18 because they knew it wouldn't pass. Here's what Kofi Annan said about the invasion in regard to the UN charter: "I have indicated it was not in conformity with the UN Charter. From our point of view, from the charter point of view, it was illegal."
