Is Amway A Scam?

I have a friend who's an Amway IBO. He's been trying to sell me stuff but the price never justified buying from him. He know better than trying to recruit me.

The one thing I did not know is that Amway now sells travel packages. I haven't had a chance to do a deep analysis, but at first glance, they don't appear to be a great value. Has anyone else looked into Amway's travel packages?

That's interesting. What country are you in? I'm not aware of Amway selling travel packages anywhere, but there's many different markets. I've checked all the english speaking markets and can't find anything. North America has deals with various hotel and hire car chains, but that's basically just getting IBOs the corporate rate and they've had that for decades. So it's not new and nothing they're "selling". I'd be interested in some details on what he told you - "travel clubs" have become big business in the direct selling world, but frankly those I've analysed are dubious at best.

You are correct and I'm embarrassed.

My friend sent me some sample travel packages for hot destinations from the US. His email had his usual Amway link and below it had a link for a travel club. I assumed it was all Amway related. My bad. Thanks for the correction.

It seems natural that someone involved with Amway would diversify into other MLMs. There's the advantage of having a diversified product line.

"Oh, I understand you don't think vitamin supplements or energy drinks are worth the money, but have you considered a vacation? And, while we are on the subject, did you know you could save a ton with a pre-paid funeral? Let me show you how this all works, along with a way to get endless commissions by selling whole life policies to your friends."

It's actually beautiful. You can reuse the same list of family and acquaintances over and over again. Nothing better than flipping hot prospects. I'm in.

Might seem natural, but experience indicates it doesn't work.

If you're going to focus primarily on retailing, then you need to learn about the features and benefits of the products. If you don't then you're completely purely on price which means you'll always lose it. It's hard enough to learn about even one segment of Amway's 450+ products without adding more.

If you're going to focus primarily on network building, you'll still need some product knowledge, but you're also promoting it as a business opportunity. If you're promoting - and thus pursuing - multiple separate business opportunities then you'll most likely lose credibility, as you're promoting products (the bizopp) that compete against each other.

Again, no. Unless you're competing on price, you need product expertise. You might get a handful of friends and family to pity buy occasionally, but you'll never build a business.

This is ironic because the tools companies compete with the Amway business also. The difference is that the tools business is disguised as a support system for IBO's but inn the end, that support system is competing for an IBO's dollars and it is why IBo's who hang around for a while can sometimes report huge losses in the tens of thousands of dollars.

Hi guys,

I restarted my business on 3rd of May as my son born that day:)
I've finally made a decision that I want to do it seriously.

At this point I have 5 people in my first line and I think that's plenty. I will focus to help build depth now so people can get some money and reach additional cash back bonus on their own shopping.

Amway UK is unique as the pricing is super competitive. I can't imagine how hard work it is in Poland for example.

I've also realised that if somebody want to do it as a profession then need to study this subject like for a white collar job.

So you've been back into the business for nearly 2 months now. How's it going if you don't mind sharing some of that information?

Seconded. We have been told that people can try it out for free and see if it works for them. Curious to get at least an anecdote.

Joecool - thanks for asking.
It's embarrassing to admit but I don't do much. I do £0 from my downline as all 11 people do nothing. Most don't even bought a single product.

This highlights how unexperienced I'm at this. I've done lots of mistakes.

However, I make about £50 from retail sells and I had no experience at this. Few very, very happy customers. :)

What is good is that I save money as UK pricing is fantastic.

The best part is amount of learning I've done. I always was interested in self development but had no enough motivation to learn every day. Now I listen to audio books 2 hours a day (while commuting) and I LOVE IT.

Summarising: I can't say that MLM made me rich in 6 months :( I'm also surprised how ineffective I was. However, there is no reason to quit amway. It cost me nothing, helps to save money, products are very good and I can always have a breakthrough moment and start building my business.

Regards
Kris

C1Rex, Thank you for your candid and honest responses. I wish you well and hope you enjoy your newborn!!

But you've inadvertently summed up why it's so hard to make any money in Amway. You're in the UK where theres no fees and the prices are good. That's because Amway was under investigation in the UK and made some pro active changes to help business. And still you did very little (and you're welcome to make that choice!).

But try to imagine the US, the most established Amway market where there are fees and shipping charges, and tools are (defacto) required and the prices are very high. How can a reasonable person expect to make money when even a motivated dude like yourself couldn't find the burn to build Amway hard?

That's not to say people cannot make money in Amway. Clearly some do make good money, but its so rare that it's like comparing lotto winners to the diamonds or something similar.

I wish you well and hope you will drop by with an update once in a while. Your candid responses are honestly appreciated. Cheers!

I'm happy to hear somebody appreciate my responses. Thanks for the good wishes for my son - you've got good memory :)
Making money in Amway is not easy but I knew that. Everybody says it's a hard work. I'm not disappointed of that but I'm very disappointed of how little action I've done so far.
It's not easy to not have a boss.

UK market has some good points but it's still relatively empty. Almost no British do Amway. Only few emigrants.

There was two crown ambassadors in London today. Free meeting with people making millions and only about 100 ABOs came.

Interesting fact is that big part of that few people who came do Amway full time.
From the group who attend the trainings most people make money. It gives an impression that more than 50% earns something.

I wish I could say I make money but I can't. Not yet :)

Cheers
Kris

I listen to books like "How to win friends and influence people". This one I listen to over and over again to be really good at this. It's life changing for me.

It's worked for you here. You have the "winning friends" part down. Now, on to the "influencing people" part.

Classic Carnegie. Honestly the book should really be called "how pretend to be peoples friend to get them to do what you want" or something along those lines. The techniques are effective though.

I did read the book two weeks ago and now study it by re-listening the audio book to understand the principles better.
It's a huge breakthrough for me - not business related only.

I would like to believe that I have power to influence people to change their mind. Unfortunately I don't have such power. :)

People seems to never change their minds on forums - they just believe stronger after each argument they give.

I can't convince anybody to Amway. It's nearly impossible. My posts have probably no impact on people opinion but all reactions to that posts has a huge impact on people who write the answer :)

Yes, people seem to think Amway is about convincing people to do it. It's not, it's about finding people who want to do it. Occasionally that may require walking them through some misconceptions, but if you somehow "con" people in to joining, then they'll do nothing. Heck, as you've found out, most people who want to do it still don't do it either!

As you said, it's not easy not to have a boss. Right now I'm supposed to be finishing off a major website and app project for launch on Tuesday. Instead I'm typing this! No boss to be accountable to.

So the hard part is to be one of the few people that not only wants to do it, but actually does it - and to remember to treat all of the other people who say they want to do it as if they are customers, not business partners, until they show otherwise by their actions.

Do you mind revealing one of these breakthrough principles?

The most important for me is to _never_ argue. There is no way to win an argument.
Forum is a good example. Nobody change theirs mind here. Just get more sure about their point of view. Then get angry at people with different opinion.
Giving another arguments make them more sure about their point of view and dislike you more at the same time.

I post on different forums for years and I'm not sure if I've seen 1 person who changed their mind and was grateful for that.

I'm shocked myself I haven't noticed this before and was keep trying to convince people for years.
