Given the ammount of rabid Jew bashing in Truther circles, there is no surprise there is any overlap- the suprising thing to me is that it is not just confined to the far right- but can also be found on the far left...
The real issue is not that there's so much "rabid Jew bashing". The issue is that what there is is tolerated. Truthing is increasingly marginalized in American society. You might see some teenaged kids showing up for these things or the odd college college student who mistake it for being 'anti-imperialist'. But these guys tend to disappear pretty quickly as they mature and start getting laid or even reading books. My experience with these gray zone members is that they don't like the idea of Nazis and the mentally ill any more than you or I do.
It's the guys who hang around that you see tolerating the "rabid Jew bashing". These hard-core Truthers are a different issue. My impression is that these Truthers are a desperate, almost pathetic lot. It is an islolated working-class and downwardly mobile educated crowd. And increasingly, they are making links with overseas Muslims. It's kind of this demented alliance between alienated status groups - working-class white kids and overseas Muslims. These groups are so alienated and scared that when neo-Nazi groups squeeze in to them, they don't do much about it even though they're just as disgusted by them as any of us. They just can't afford to do anything about it.
So despite Prozac's impression that 911 Truth is bursting at the seems with experts on this thing and experts on that thing, there is no sign of them anywhere. There's a handful of educated professionals who act as standard bearers for the movement, but have gained no respect outside the conspiracy theorist community. There are a lot of names on Internet petitions, but I suspect most of these were put there as statements against the Bush Administration and new ones as libertarian protests. I doubt any would show up at a public demonstration.
The Truth Movement is in some sense becoming a really dark place, and that's what I think members here are sensing. It's an unholy alliance between people who share nothing in common except alienation and fear. It's the so-called 'old hippies', some clinically mentally ill adults, some adults with sub-normal IQ scores, a pile of underemployed working-class kids and adults, and a growing number of overseas Muslims. All this is being led a group of fired university professors who ascribe to whacky conspiracy theories. And in all this mess, an increasingly vocal racist group is making themselves heard.
All the shootings and killings we've recently seen that are linked to 911 Truthers, I suspect, are only the beginning.
