Have you ever tried to dox yourself?

Well now that I know what it is, of course I have. I've also used numerous ways to find somebody else online that did an otherwise good job of hiding themselves.

In any event, not much to hide here, and not much to share either.

I'm sure anyone here can figure out exactly who I am, without going past what is present on this bulletin board.

There's no point to privacy in my case, I was being stalked by audiophile nutters before JREF had a web site.

What's kind of interesting is that people who wish to attack comments I make on particular fields seem completely in capable of reading the information available to them, despite its ready availability.

Add me to the list of those for whom doxing would be overkill. If someone can't figure out who I am and where I live from pretty easy googling, they're not trying very hard.

That's funny. I searched and searched for a person named [redacted] working as a [redacted] who drives a [redacted] and lives in [redacted] and performs various community services related to her [redacted], but I could not find anyone with those distinctive ears. What a clever ruse.

Yeah, my nick is definitely no big secret. I've been using it since the late eighties/early nineties, and I've been all over the net for that amount of time, and it's an odd-enough spelling that there are no dups--every hit on "xtifr" is a reference to me, though I've seen less eccentric variations like "xopher" quite often. My real name is actually harder to track, since there are several mildly notable people who share it.

Just today I accidentally found out a user's real name. I wanted to see a larger version of a picture they posted and it happened to lead to their Photobucket account, which was open for anyone to see, with all their personal photos and apparently real name. Don't know if they chose to make all that public, but it sure was.

I did exactly the same thing a few minutes ago. Same picture/user quite likely.

Same thing memorably happened to me on another forum where I was invited to look at pictures of a modified car and the same folder was full of pics of the guy's frankly stunning girlfriend in a bikini. I did wonder if he was just careless or if he was showing off how awesome his life was. It's an uncomfortable feeling, when you don't quite know the boundary to your invitation and where you begin to intrude into private stuff.

I'm anonymous on this forum but most places I use my real name. There's enough I've written about myself here that a determined person could identify me, but the obscurity provided by 6,400+ posts probably makes it not worth the effort.

Luckily I have a fairly famous musician with my name who does a lot of web advertising and social media, so you really have to know who you are looking for and sift through a lot of crap to find my info

I only use a handle because I was asked when joining what my handle was. Elsewhere, I go by my real name. I am interested in doxing though and would like to know how to do it. Do you just input the person's handle and see what happens? One second while I try it on myself … aaaand … nothing, except somebody is pretending to be me in Quebec.

It's often surprisingly easy to do. People leave a lot of footprints.

Or if that doesn't work, do an image search on their avatar or other images to see if they've posted the same ones elsewhere. Or check photos for a Photobucket or other account, as mentioned above.

I don't make any particular effort to hide my identity; I've been doxxed at least once just from my activity here. Fortunately, the person doing the doxxing didn't have malicious intent.

What's funny is that a previous avatar I used on here was a photograph of myself and it was the same avatar I was using at the same time on another forum where I went by my real name. A psychic wanted to show how good she was, so I asked who was in my avatar here.

She got it completely wrong. Yet one can see what just a little googling will do.

Searching anglolawyer and surrey, I found a forum where there were lots of curious posts quoting anglolawyer, yet no posts actually written by anglolawyer. The text that anglolawyer supposedly posted appeared in posts by first-name-last-name, as if you'd changed your handle on that forum from anglolawyer to your real name and the software had dynamically changed the name in all the first posts but not in the quoted posts.

Searching for first-name-last-name, I found a post by that name on a different forum, suggesting that people check out your posts on another forum where you went by anglolawyer, so that confirmed it.
