Has Boris gone yet?

If I'm understanding it correctly, the no confidence vote isn't like an impeachment. The "ballots" are confidential? The names of those who cast them aren't read aloud along with the vote?

Don't know about the confidentiality, but it probably is. Except for those who've publicly declared which way they went.
Nothing at all like a USA impeachment. It's strictly internal to the party and carries no legal weight.

Not gone, not all that close 211-148.

He got less support than May who was wounded by the vote and managed to limp on for a couple of months.

Yep. May, Major and Thatcher were all severely damaged by these types of votes. Johnson does have a massive shamelessness about him that could insulate him to some extent but for anyone else this would turn him into a dead man walking.

148 voting against BoJo is at the top end of expectations, practically a guarantee of ongoing trouble in the Tory party.

Two fifths of his MPs have no confidence? That's bad.

It will be interesting (i.e. cringeworthy) to see what spin his supporters put on this. I predict Shapps will make us all want to vomit ;) Dorries too.

“This is just like Winston Churchill standing alone against… the Nazis….?!?”

From The Guardians excellent John Crace -

"As expected The Convict had won the vote but lost the leadership. Worse even than the Maybot back in 2018. Johnson would say he was going to hang on – he’s a bad loser – but there was no coming back from this. It may be weeks, it may be months but Boris is toast."

To be fair, we would expect John Crace in the Graun to be calling Johnson toast. I think it becomes more interesting that the Torygraph are saying the same thing…

Boris Johnson may have won, but the vultures are circling
Bruising vote represents one of the worst ever confidence ‘victories’ for a sitting prime minister, calling his authority into question

And…

Boris Johnson played a mediocre hand badly and sadly, he looks like toast
The Prime Minister scraped through to win the confidence vote, but whatever happens, it might be all downhill from here

And…

Can you imagine how well it would play in every election until he goes?

"Nearly 1 in 2 Tory MPs think the Tory leader should go, how can you support him?"
