Georgia has new gun law.

I predict a rise in gun violence and shooting deaths will happen in Georgia following the law that was just passed in Georgia
I predict you will be wrong. And it will just be the latest of anti-gun blood in the streets, wild west predictions that don't come true when gun laws are changed.

Sylvia Browne had a higher success rate.

According what Una posted before it rose by 200 in Florida. I don't think anyone is saying it will turn into the wild wild west, but it'll give a strong data set to monitor and pull information from.
What happened to the murder rate in Florida? That state has added many millions of people in the last 10 years. In fact, the murder rate in Florida is at or near historic lows and slightly lower than Illinois with all its restrictions.

I can only imagine what the rate here would be if we had Florida's weather...

I wouldn't expect much of a spike in gun murders. Accidental shootings and suicides seem the more likely candidates for increase.
Huh? Why would anyone need a concealed carry license to commit suicide with a gun? And do ccl holders have a higher gun accident rate than others?

Especially with guns in bars.

"Here, hold my drink and watch this...<BANG>...oops."
Like William S. Burroughs shooting his wife playing drunken William Tell.

Guns in bars.....what could possibly go wrong?
Yeah, it's a regular bloodbath in the states that already allow that. So many examples of it happening, like...um, help me out here will ya? :boggled:

Wow, Thanks Emily! I totally didn't acknowledge that in another post.

ETA: And it still gives them the right to bring a gun on campus as long as they have written permission, which in my opinion is still stupid. That's why it's my opinion though. Thanks for double checking me.
Don't even need permission in Utah, and of course teachers and parents regularly shoot students there in fits of anger. I'll let you list some of the what must be many examples.

I DO live in Georgia, albeit rural Georgia.

Virtually every one of my neighbors own guns. Many have permits and carry concealed. Grabbing your gun as you head out the door is a routine habit. This law changed very little, except decreasing the number of places one must disarm in day-to-day business.

Gun crime is exceedingly rare. Maybe hear of one or two cases a year - and these are often related to criminals from points south - mainly Atlanta - who typically avoid plying their trades around here but sometimes end up fleeing north.

There's an expression: " An armed society is a polite society". If everyone is armed, it makes sense to avoid confrontations of all kinds. I know I do.

Regardless, I am opposed to SYG laws. When I was a police officer, I felt it the moral thing to avoid using deadly force except as a last resort. If that meant "yielding ground", I did so - up to the point where my own safety or that of others would be compromised. A citizen has no need to stand his or her ground, in the vast majority of cases - excluding in his or her own home, which is generally covered by the "Castle Doctrine".

Unabogie and I disagree, politely, on a number of topics. But he was making a simple prediction - I saw no straw man in evidence. Time will tell whether his prediction is accurate. Regardless, across great swaths of GA, not much has changed.

As an aside, our concealed weapon permits are reciprocal with many states.

But when we travel through Illinois, we usually stop at the welcome center, unload our guns and stick them out of reach in the back of the car.

And in this newly unarmed state, we avoid Chicago like the plague. We do not feel safer for the restrictive gun laws there.

Got my Illinois CCL 3 weeks ago. :)

I'm sorry about you out of staters, we're trying to fix that.

eta: if you have a Georgia (or any other state) permit you are allowed to keep a loaded gun inside your car in Illinois per the new law, just don't take it out of your car.

Thanks!

For those new to this sort of thing, people with concealed carry permits go to sites like this to stay out of trouble:

http://www.usacarry.com/concealed_carry_permit_reciprocity_maps.html

Click on your state, and you can see where your permit is good.

Try GA, and you'll note Illinois is the first state we lose our privileges in when heading north. South Carolina seems like an odd man out.

I live in (suburban) Atlanta. Many of my neighbors own guns; some of them even do so legally like myself. There is a gas station near my subdivision that has a shooting once or twice a year.

Georgia's a very diverse place.

Honestly, it sounds nice, but if that expression held water, South Central LA would be the friendliest place on Earth.

Nonetheless, I'm not losing any sleep over this new law. It doesn't really change the status quo all that much. But like virtually every other piece of legislation relating to guns, its supporters herald it as a major expansion of gun rights and its opponents herald the oncoming of Somalia-on-Chattahoochee.

I'd just like to use it to point and laugh at the "they're a cummin' for ur gunzz" crowd.

Uh, no. They're not.

This.

Where's Obama and those evil, anti-gun librulz with their back-door gun grab schemes?

"The Second Amendment should never be an afterthought. It should be at the forefront of our minds," Deal said while touting his NRA endorsement for governor and "A" rating during his 17 years in Congress.

Pander for that gunnutter vote!

Thanks - that's actually relevant to me, as my uncle invited me to a range when I go up there in a couple months, and I may bring a piece or two. :)

Ah yes, a whole thread of people claiming correlation equals causation, and cherry-picks the correlation.
Peer-reviewed study in an academic journal, also known as "science".

Don't let your arms get tired from all that hand-waving.

Oh please. Such fantastic baloney.

I lost a pretty good friend to a drunken negligent discharge w/ a Rem 7 mag. He and the individual that shot him had both been drinking, the rifle was loaded and somehow my friend was shot through the elbow which pretty much traumatically amputated his forearm. My friend bled out because not only was the shooter drunk, he didn't even know enough to put a tourniquet on the arm above the wound.

SFPD lost a rookie officer a couple of years back when the rookie had friends over for a little drinking and he decided to display his duty issue piece.

Somehow he managed to shoot himself through the neck and was DRT.

When I was instructing initial applicants and requals for concealed carry licenses in the county where I served, I made it a point to drill into every applicant or requal that alcohol and/or drugs never mix well with firearms, a practice handed down to me by my father and Uncle, who had more knowledge in the subject matter than I'll ever have.

My father had a laundry list of fatals and near fatals involving alcohol and firearms, including a few from The Corps in Korea, and his older brother had even more.

My policy is this: if the bottle comes out, the pieces stay locked. Anybody that has a problem accepting that is not welcome in my circle.

Where's Obama....
Most likely waiting for a decent gun control bill to make its way through Congress. His executive actions aren't going to have any significant impact at all.

and those evil, anti-gun librulz with their back-door gun grab schemes?
Probably trying to figure out another way to screw up another gun control bill so it doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of passage. Then they can continue to cry about the evil GOP and beg for another term to screw it up again. A vicious cycle indeed.

Just ask Dick Cheney.
