Rishi Sunak is preparing a big overhaul of UK corporate tax system.
If this doesn't lead to a situation where the biggest companies end up paying less tax I'll eat my hat.

Many of them don't pay any tax as it stands.

Maybe we'll see corporations being given tax credits for the tax that their employees pay as a way of rewarding them for employing people in the UK.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is doing a press conference question.

After journalists were told not to direct overly political questions at Nazanin, Tom Harwood from GB News, said directly to her, that he thought the government shouldn't have paid the debt that got her released.

MPs had the chance today to vote to condemn P&O's sacking of 800 workers and to urgently outlaw fire and rehire, so that this can never happen again.

Not a single Tory MP voted for it.

Grant Shapps the Transport Minister said yesterday

As I told Parliament, we are seriously considering our relationship with P&O Ferries.
Sacking 800 workers without warning is a disgrace to our world-leading sector
We have asked the Insolvency Service to review their action and we are examining all contracts between HMG and P&O Ferries as a matter of urgency.

We will do everything to support those who have been laid off and to defend workers' rights

Then him and the entire governing party literally abstained from voting in a bill that would prevent this from happening.

P&O have crews through Cyprus on contract from India.
Their hourly pay works out at about £1.50

There are reasons for flagging UK ships abroad and using agencies in India or the far east to supply crews.

My dad started as an engineer with P&O back in the 50s and was with them up until the late 60s.

He was on Liners and cruise ships to start with and the crews were mainly British.
He transferred to cargo ships working the Indian Ocean as there was more chance for promotion and more responsibility.
Out there the crew were British officers with Lascar crew mainly for logistical reasons.
Adjusted for inflation over the decades, they crew were on a rate that was far higher than P&O is now paying it's new Indian crews.

As Darat keeps reminding us, with this shower, it's never about the doing, it's about the headlines.

Why would they do something and risk incurring the wrath of donors when they can get positive headlines for just saying **** ?

A caller on LBC this morning said Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is 'very politically orientated' and said she should give any money from a film or book deal to charity.
Another said she should just be grateful to the govt for getting her out and say thank you.
Another that she’s looking good after 6 years inside and only criticising the UK and not her captors. Was it all 'staged'?

That bit of Shapps quote is (unsurprisingly) a lie. Number 10 subsequently admitted that they had been told the day before, that P&O were about to sack their employees.

IMV Nazanin is understandably angry about her captivity, which must have been enormously stressful. However, I do think she could have been more gracious, given that OK, so Truss only paid up the £400m because of political expediency, but she did get her out and Jeremy Hunt did get her diplomatic status, thus she was able to have home arrest. Her husband was treated appallingly. When he was on hunger strike recently, Johnson just walked straight past him. He thanked the government nonetheless. Manners maketh man. The finer details can come later. I will say that the abuse Nazanin has been subject to is vile and is little more than an excuse for the extreme right wing to spread hatred. Nazanin doesn't have to be 'grateful'.

"Gracious" to a set of charlatans who contributed to her imprisonment and then her extra sentences? For paying back money that had been held on to for 40 sodding years? Who have done **** all to get her out?

Why?

What exactly is there to be gracious for?

Personally I'd be spitting blood and there would be no hint of thanks, as the government has spectaculary failed to look after one of our citizens. If one of that shower of **** had done something like volunteer to take her place in prison in Teheran that might be worthy of gratitude, but they didn't, so **** them!

I don't see what the Insolvency Service can do about it, without some kind of High Court action. It does have the power to pay a small minimum sum. It would be Employment Law. However, it was the Tories who brought in the £1,000 fee to discourage employees from using that route, now scrapped, as later deemed illegal. Boris Johnson when he was Mayor of London publicly proclaimed that Employment Law was 'bonkers' and mocked the idea of anyone going to a Employment Tribunal, saying employees were all a bunch of scammers or suchlike.

People just do not realise that Johnson's cuddly chummy act is an illusion - like Jimmy Savile's - and underneath it all he is a vile horrid man. He knew about the P&O ferry SNAFU before he went to the Middle East and could have sorted it but did not.

The way he clings desperately onto his own job like a limpet should inform him of how important people's livelihoods are to them.

I know, I know. However, the Foreign Office has never been much help to Brits arrested abroad.

She was imprisoned as a political prisoner not arrested.

And the current PM's words as Foreign Secretary contributed to her incarceration. The fact that in order to protect Big Dog, he decided to concede is simply grounds for pointing out that he's finally done the right thing.

No10 confirms that, despite Boris being "desperate" to go to Ukraine, Zelensky has not invited him.

Turns our that Oligarchs can evade UK sanctions pretty easily:

A Russian billionaire sanctioned by the UK says he no longer owns many former properties, potentially putting them beyond the reach of the law.

Ex-Arsenal shareholder Alisher Usmanov's £82m London home and Surrey mansion were put into trusts linked to the oligarch.

It's almost as if the UK government's sanctions were designed to generate positive headlines whilst at the same time ensuring that Conservative Party donors can secure their assets.

Another one from the "you literally could not make this up" file.....

It took too long to secure the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori from prison in Iran, former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has said.

Mr Hunt told the BBC the British-Iranian pair's return to the UK last week was an "extraordinary achievement" but it should have happened faster.

He called for an independent inquiry into the issue.

Yeah, who were all these incompetents who were in charge the last 6 years and which party did they belong to ?
