So, exactly what measures have actually been put in place (as opposed to the waffly, platitudes and outright lies we've heard for years) to ensure that things like life-saving drugs (checks packets - only one of the 6 doesn't fall into that category) made in Europe (checks packets - harder to tell but at least 2 of the most significant fall into that category) still make it into the country when we crash and burn about this time next week? I'd quite like to stay alive a bit longer.

Do you really think the current government can stop drugs at the border? They barely know what a border is, let alone how to secure one.

If you have been following the news for the last few months you will know the situation with the IT systems at the ports and the infrastructure and over the last couple of weeks reports of containers being diverted to Europe because of congestion in UK container terminals.

As for the shipping, I am the source.
I follow shipping reports and traffic using the ports and shipping lines own published daily shipping movements. I follow daily traffic in the North Sea using the Marine Traffic live tracking app.
I am mainly interested in the North Sea trade but I have noticed the increased traffic in the deep sea ports.
I have seen the change in patterns.

At Teesport for example the RoRo ferries and A to B container ships are dropping bigger loads and people I know that work for PD at Teeside have told me about the plans to put on another ship and re purpose the car terminal although that has been talked about for a couple of years.

Here is an example.
Today AtoB Spirit is dropping containers from Rozenburg (Hook of Holland) and Pengalia is loading for Grangemouth.
This is new traffic, I have only seen this 'Grangemouth Shuttle' a couple of times before, both in the last couple of months.

Okay, so the source for that lot is personal connections you have with people who work there. Thank you.

And the assertion that all custom checks will stop for 6 months?

It really shouldn't be this hard to get information on sources on a sceptic's site.

Is this what happens when you have a government(s) full of folk who've never really done a proper job and consequently have never heard of lean management and "just in time" ordering and no-one holding inventories of stuff or raw materials, but let journalists notorious for not being able to meet deadlines run something more complex than their expense claims?

Yes, I know I'm being snarky, but seriously if my meds are interfered with I'll be in A&E and admitted pretty bloody sharply as I don't have much room for manoeuvre. There are a couple of alternative meds, but that would require me seeing the cardiology team, washing out for several days and then re-starting something which doesn't work so well. And I'm well past when I should have had my regular cardiology review, 'cos the staff are all off doing other things.

How many other people are in this sort of position? A significant number of us start missing meds and A&E will grind to a halt, beds will be blocked like you won't believe.

But all I hear is manure of the bovine from the politicians in charge, who have either been lying since 2016 or clearly have no idea what is actually going on for many folk.

We will make sure you are buried with your share of the sovereignty and a blue passport.

On a serious note it's an absolute ********, isn't it?

And my own observations of shipping patterns.

As for customs, how else are they going to get anything through without any proper systems in place?

It's not that they would secure the border (I think even Raab can find the sea), more that there will be such an unholy mess at borders with new arrangements which no-one knows about, new rules no-one knows how to follow, queues here, hold ups there, confusion everywhere and the whole shebang grinding to a halt with nothing and nobody moving.

Now, the UK-ian government has definitely shown themselves capable of that level of incompetence and a lack of understanding of supply chains.

Ridiculous allegation, Mistress Sin can always lay her hands on chains, and she’ll supply an invoice for “ser-vices rendered”!

Facebook is moving responsibility for the UK from it's EU HQ to it's California HQ and pushing out a new EULA that may or may not allow UK users data to be sent to the US.

Under EU law Facebook and other tech companies are prevented from housing any personal data in the US because US search and seizure laws don't protect non-US citizens living outside the US. IOW the US government could access any and all UK Facebook data at any time without a warrant and Facebook would be legally prevented from telling you it happened.

The UK is probabaly still protected because EU high court rulings that this violates EU law will still be in effect (as part of UK case law, but the legal basis for those ruling are go. Also "EU high court bad! Don't want EU high court decisions!" even though most of the internet privacy protections for UK citizens after Brexit will still stem directly from EU law and the EU high court.

I've said it before, but this is just the latest example. The UK is like a teenager who wants "freedom" but has no clue what's even involved in living on their own and certainly isn't capable of actually doing any of those things on it's own.

A French company supplies 20% of our Electricity via undersea cables.

Maybe not a good idea to threaten their fishing boats with the navy.
They make our passports too.

Maybe I've been watching far too many chess videos on YT but I'm trying to work out if there isn't some gambit being played out moves in advance.

UK: threaten to send gunboats after French trawlers
France: send a few boats into UK waters just to see
UK: send in the gunboats
France: fishermen block the port of Calais and the entrance to the Tunnel
UK: order lorry drivers not to hit the roads and claim credit for Kent not becoming a poo-covered lorry park
France: announce the relocation of more UK manufacturing onto French soil
UK: ...

Although to be fair this would require the capacity for strategic thinking in Westminster.

The UK has now agreed Free Trade deals with 58 countries before leaving the EU Customs Union. No apologies yet from those who said we would lose all EU trade deals on leaving. I look forward to us agreeing to join the large Pacific partnership which the EU has not joined.

That's all very well but the Faroes is hardly France or Germany.

Also, these deals are a fantastic success for the UK, despite being continuations of the deals that were made on our behalf by the EU, which until now were bad for us.

Ah, but some of them - like the Japan trade deal - are on marginally worse terms ;)

Surprised he hasn't included Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man in the 58!

We are going from around 60% of our trade covered by a free trade deal to around 5%. But look at all the jobs that will be created to complete the paperwork and clearances on that 55% reduction in free movement.

I was watching some commentator who opined that one of the pre-requisite conditions for a comprehensive trade deal with India is that India would enjoy freedom of movement to the UK similar to that which the EU used to have.

If that were to happen, watching the Brexiteers heads asploding would be quite entertaining.

They needn't worry, I'm sure Boris will remind India of everything the Raj did for them and they will promptly break off diplomatic relations...

Is that before or after he announces a new body for handling trade with India called the East India Company?

PS William Dalrymple's The Anarchy is well worth a read, if you haven't already.

I'm just guessing but I would not be surprised if these countries represented a small part of British trade. It's not like it's difficult to negotiate a trade agreement between two states when there's very little trade nor very little potential for future growth in trade.
