African shaman performing levitation

If "Dejan" and "Troll" are inside jokes could you let us outsiders know what it means? I have tried to be polite.

Well, the mysteries of the human brain have yet to be unraveled. For example, why do you sleep? No body seems to know that. Where is the mind in the brain? Again, no body knows. So, brain waves exist. That's a fact. Do brain waves flow through the air and go into some one else's brain? Why not? Couldn't that explain the fact that a person can know what another person is thinking even across the room (sometimes across the whole country). Couldn't there brainwaves go over to the other person. Do we really know whether those waves can pass through the skull and go into the brain? I think a lot more research need to be done.

Also, I did not see any pole in the Shaman's levitation. He was first seen walking around and around. I *AM* suspicious because I did not see the whole thing in real continuous time, because someone "off camera" must have lighted the circle (question with what?) of flame. So color me a little "suspicious" right from the getgo. But, as I said before, he is *NOT* having any distortion or compression from the "wires" that nobody sees but is sure they are there.

Africa is probably the last place where real Shaman's are. Every other place has gone the way of Wal*Marts. The African shaman's are known for being able to use the plants in the forest to find things out and do things. We did not see what plants were prepared here, but I would bet it is *very* important, and we westerners have *lost* the ability to see, even with the highest power microscopes, what plants in the forest can really do.

Dejan is the user ID of what I will assume is another person. There seems to be a casual similarity between you and dejan, but this I cannot prove. But a moderator can. Pending such action by a mod/admin, I withdraw that statement and will not repeat it.

A Troll is a person who posts just for the sake of argument. I refer you to this link for an authoritative definition.

Or... we could skip all of your unfounded and illogical assertions of "what if", and go with the likely explanation: FRAUD.

I read the article on "trolls" and although I think it is OK to raise things for debate, the definition includes a troll "mocking" and insulting the rest of the forum. I don't think that is proper and I have not done so.

There was a reference to "boobs" on the forum earlier, which I thought was off color, but I did not comment.

Sorry if I offended anyone with my posts.

If irregardless means the opposite of what I meant to say (assuming you know what I meant) then does "inflammable" mean the opposite of "flammable"?
Something that is flammable will burn. Something that is inflammable will not merely burn, it will enflame, i.e., it will burn very rapidly. Thus, wood is flammable, ether is inflammable.

No one is offended, innerspace. Confused, maybe. But not offended. I know I'm not, takes a good bit more than that.

You know what's offensive? Fraudulent crap like psychics, UFOs, levitation, any mumbojumbo used to deceive and beguile. That's what's offensive. If someone attacks your argument, don't take it personally. It ain't you, it's the stuff you're talking about.

This is a good example of your convoluted logic, and this is maybe why people are irritated when you post. You don't know the difference between your fancy and established fact.

A fact is something that can be validated through external evaluation. it has evidence to support it. Positive, repeatable evidence.

Opinions, hypotheses, and anecdotes are not facts.

Well, the mysteries of the human brain have yet to be unraveled.

Some mysteries HAVE been. Many, many, more are still awaiting discovery. This is one reason why I have decided to devote my career to studying the brain and the nervous system. But just because the brain continues to be an enigma does not give one free license to invent any hypothesis they wish and present it as fact. It still needs evidence to support it.

For example, why do you sleep? No body seems to know that.

I am not sure what the intended point of this is. We are not wholly ignorant to why sleep is needed. I suggest you look that up. Certain processes, including some aspects of metabolism and memory formation, make sleep necessary. At any rate, this point is hardly relevant to the discussion at hand.

Where is the mind in the brain? Again, no body knows. So, brain waves exist. That's a fact.

Once again a misrepresentation. While consciousness and intellect is very far from being completely understood, it's isn't as simple where it is in the brain, and "nobody knows". We know of regions and even specific structures in the brain that contribute to consciousness and intellect.
And where the heck did brain waves enter this? I'd really like to hear your explanation of how us not knowing where the mind is in the brain means that brain waves exist. And what exactly is a "brain wave"? What is it a wave OF?

Just because you do not understand something, does not mean that mystical forces need be invoked.

He thinks perhaps the shaman is sending out brain waves to make us think he is levitating. He posted that a few posts above.

I know, thanks. ;) My point was that brain waves don't follow logically from us being ignorant of the human brain. Sorry if I didn't stress that properly. :)

I am sorry someone was irritated. I thought it was an interesting thing to look at the film and see what it meant.

I can assure you, many people I know would agree with me about these things. But I am willing to be educated.

Brain waves are the things that are measured by the EEG machine. They are electromagnetic waves that go through the air. Wouldn't they get into some one else's brain? Now this is just a *theory* but can it be disproved? I have heard that some people have got to wear something around their heads to prevent other people's brain waves from bothering them. Maybe that is the origin of "crowns" made of metal for kings. They prevented brain waves from others getting through. I have not seen this written but maybe it is a *theory* we could prove. Perhaps some of the people on this forum could research that theory, if in fact it is true. We would take a crown-ed person and compare them to an un-crown-ed prerson for how they could be influenced by other peoples brainwaves.

Also, can you explain ESP, except in relation to brain waves? I would prefer an explanation that has natural forces in it.

Evolution (which I believe in, although it does not have all the answers, ref: the eyeball) has provided the dog with this ability, probably when we lived in caves and someone could steal our dogs, which we needed.

:)
Nominated.

There is a rule on the Internet that before you post on a forum that you first Lurk and then Lurk some more before you every make your first post.

There are real people reading what you say on this forum. Some of who have even graduated from high school or more.

Your comments, responses, naviety and level of gullibility suggest that you are quite young. You will receive, mostly polite, responses to your posts. But this is a forum of skeptics and adults, do not be too surprised if one or two of us find what you are saying highly amusing.

No one can explain ESP any more than they can explain the tooth fairy. Until there is some real evidence that it exists (either ESP or the tooth fairy) there is nothing to explain.

But I am willing to be educated.

This is a good thing. The key will be what material you choose to educate yourself with. :)

Brain waves are the things that are measured by the EEG machine. They are electromagnetic waves that go through the air. Wouldn't they get into some one else's brain?

OK! Now we are getting somewhere. :) I think you have been misled by a misleading term; brain waves are not actually electromagnetic waves, like radio waves are. What follows is fairly simplified, or else I would be typing this post for an hour ;) . An EEG measures not electromagnetic waves nor electrical currents, but rather voltage differences between nerve cells or brain regions. These voltage differences are how the cells manage to communicate. Think of it this way: if "brain waves" actually extended past the brain for any significant distance, why would we need to place electrodes on/in the head to measure them? :)

Also, can you explain ESP, except in relation to brain waves? I would prefer an explanation that has natural forces in it.

An explanation of ESP involving natural forces is that it probably does not exist. Normal psychological processes can explain what people percieve as ESP. I'm not saying ESP doesn't exist, but there isn't any decent evidence to state that it does.

Stand on a scale and flap your arms, insidespace...
Hey! You can change your weight!

Without the magic dog?

Yeah, I caught that, too! That's about when I gave up on it as a very young child or a troll. As the dog wiggles the weight changes. Well, yeah, if you tilt to the left or right or do the hokie pokie, the weight will also change, but if you stand still again it'll stabilize at the actual weight.

Insidespace, in case you haven't figured it out yet - we're not offended by boobs. In fact we have a noted forumite who probably has "boobs" as her keyword search, and should be along momentarily.

What we're offended by is willful ignorance and childish speculation on topics where we have available (here and elsewhere) considerable amounts of research and evidence.

What we're offended by is someone who doesn't even read the opening post or note that it was by "Dejan", and who thus has to repeatedly ask "who or what is a Dejan".

The mark of the troll in this respect is not scatological comments or name-calling. Rather, it's insulting our intelligence with drivel.

OK brainwaves are not waves, just differences in voltage? Well, I thought differences in voltage cause electromagnetic waves. But anyway, I am sure no one is saying that all that can be discovered has been discovered about the mysteries of the brain. Not too long ago, TV would have been considered witchcraft, as you know. So there may be waves we cannot sense with our best equipment, yet they influence our brains and the brains around us.

How else to explain, for instance, how you "know" someone is looking at you before you really see them? It happens all the time. Evolution gives an advantage to those persons who can recognize being stared at, so you are sensitive to those brain waves. Proof: It does *not* happen with a picture or a movie, only a real live person.

So I am not wedded to brain waves per se, only if that definition is extended to waves of a type we cannot detect with our *current* limited equipment, which in 50 years will be thought of like we think of a stone wheel.
