Merged 2014 Hugo awards.

Just when you think the Sad Puppies can;t get lower in their tactics, they find a way.....

At times I would love to grab Gerrold and yell "FINISH THE WAR AGAINST THE CHTORR ALREADY" but still trying to sic the police on him is going way beyond the beyond....

Antonelli issued yet another half-arsed 'apology' to Cuinn, basically saying 'gosh! I never imagined that would happen when I complained about her actions to fans and left her contact info in the email'. Dude, do you even know the internet?

His fans on his page of course rally behind him, claiming she made up the abuse, she deserved it for not printing his story after his previous stunt, etc.

Sounds familiar.

Indeed.

:D Not finishing a series is annoying (and Gerrold doesn't have the excuse of being dead, injured or developing religion) but he is a free agent.

True. And I agree Antonelli knew damn well what his original actions towards Cuinn would have triggered. Now the frantic back-peddling is in operation, including his attempt to revise what he actually did.

Publicity stunt?
If so it's only raised his standing in a small fringe and probably seriously damaged his actual career.

Thank you for posting this; not so much for what she says about the Hugos, as that I enjoy crossover mysteries and she mentions 3 for me to take a look at...

I found Eric Flint's posts about the Hugos interesting (incidentally most of his work is published by Baen, but unlike some of their authors he is personally very, very left wing - I like some of his coauthored books in particular):

And another Irony is that Gerrold;s "War Against The Chtorr" is some of the best Military Science Fiction every written.....a genre that the Sad Puppies seemed obsseed with.
I really hope Gerrold does manage to finish it.

But it's got some interesting speculation on gender roles (e.g. the [male] protagonist having sex with his [male] best friend while the latter is in a female body). Also there are capable female military personnel, rather a puppy repellant.

Slightly OT but one thing I found from the debate/debacle is that Gerrold is gay; oddly this is the third author I like about whom I've found this own recently.

I find it interesting that there seems to be a considerable degree of presenting only one side of the story (something a certain other consumer movement involving video games knows all too well). Presenting the other side? That's just crazy talk! We've listened to just the one side, and that side is righteous and pure and beyond question! They tell us all we need to know!

For those interested in getting views and opinions from both sides in this particularly industry brouhaha, I present the following (which I expect will earn me a ticket onto the list of folks not getting Christmas cards from certain posters here for daring to suggest there might be more than one side to a situation, and encouraging folks to read that other side before rendering a final opinion):

The Goat Kicks Back
Scalzi Busted for Breaking his own Code of Ethics

Dear FSM, I clicked on that second URI and nearly barfed over my keyboard. WTF, geocities is not dead which can eternal lie?
:D
And that's even before reading the crap posted about Scalzi (who dared to criticise the Stop the Goodreads Bullies site). It'd be amusing if it wasn't so pathetic. Though it's rather typical of certain groups and their reaction to their impotence.

Now they're not the Hugos but the Sidewise Awards have been announced.
For those of you who've never heard of them the award are for alternative history fiction.

The winners are:
[Short form]
Ken Liu: The Long Haul: From the Annals of Transportation, The Pacific Monthly, May 2009

[Long form]
Kristine Kathryn Rusch: The Enemy Within

To be more specific: in every category where there was a non-puppy choice, the non-puppy candidate won (or one of them, in the few cases more than one was available). In every single category where there were no non-puppy alternatives, a No Award vote was returned. That's pretty emphatic rejection of the attempted shenanigans.

There are some minor (verrry minor) 'yes buts' to that - the puppies were behind 'Guardians of the Galaxy' for movies but I think that was a shoo-in to begin with. They might have also backed a couple of likely-to-win anyways in the minor categories.

Overall I agree with the results. The business meeting will be interesting.

It's always fun when the mainstream media misinforms, distorts, or outright lies. From Wired, about the Hugos: Who Won Science Fiction’s Hugo Awards, and Why It Matters.

Wired said:
GamerGate makes a political movement out of threatening with rape any woman who has the temerity to offer an opinion about a videogame.
Wired said:
Now, in the same year that the so-called mens’ rights movement was driven into a froth by Mad Max: Fury Road ...

If Wired is going to get its basic facts utterly wrong on both the above-mentioned items, why on earth should I take anything it says about the Hugos seriously? Is it too much to ask to have journalists do at least a bit of research into a subject if they're going to stick it into an article they're writing?

As a general note, I can't say I'm surprised by the inability of some supposedly skeptically-minded folks to not even entertain the idea that maybe, just maybe, what they've heard about a group/side/what have you might be wrong. Nope, we've got the righteous certainty of The Truth™!

Listen to the other side? Heresy!

ETA: As I am starting to enjoy the role of playing a heretic, at least as it regards this particular topic, I offer the following so that it can be rejected: Set Phasers to Kill! SJWs Burn Down The Hugo Awards To Prove How Tolerant And Welcoming They Are.

Bretibart, riiiiight.

Sorry, I gave GG and the puppies their chance a long time ago. They flopped badly. Their extracted price was too high & sickening for any positive results they could ever acheive. You might have convinced yourself of that in the echo-chamber that the Gamergate thread became after those opposing it decided it wasn't worth the effort any more (much as most of the media has done with GG) but that does not mean your are right or that we haven't been paying attention.
