All Hail Taylor Swift, Person of the Year!

Sounds like she may really be like Dolly Parton, then. I'm probably not going to seek out her music, but I'm not going to hate her just because I get tired of seeing her name in media too often.

Unless I see her in commercials. That's a quick path to my undying enmity.

Very like Dolly, yes. Just a wonderful person even if her music is not on my personal playlist. Also, if you are banging her and you break up, it's my understanding that she will musically immortalize your shortcomings.

Also, I worry that she needs a sandwich. Skinny little thing.

ETA: just saw recent pics of her, she's filled out and looks healthier than last I saw her. She used to look flat out anorexic

You must be very careful. I can't navigate my way around in public without encountering random environmental music. Never been into a shopping centre? Did you buy your CDs from a completely silent music store? Never passed by someone on the street with a boom box?

If he'd said that about Phil Collins I'd raise an eyebrow but they dont play pop that can't buy beer over the PA round these parts.

I don't think I could identify one of her songs, but I'm led to understand MAGATs are pissing themselves over this, so I'm down with it.

I'd take that on the basis that being known for banging her is worth a lot more points than not having been.

There's an entire sub-Reddit dedicated to her underarms. At least, that's what someone told me...

Seriously though - I see other singers whose main claim to fame is that they wear the least amount over of material over their genitals - Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus spring to mind - while other than the odd glimpse of thigh, Taylor doesn't flaunt her very obvious sex appeal.

I don't go to shopping centres, haven't bought a CD in over 15 years, don't encounter boom boxes out here in the sticks, have avoided commercial TV channels for years so don't get musical adverts, only play CDs in the car.

Perhaps you're being a little dogmatic?
No, just rather surprised that you live your entire life in a sealed box. I'm the most introverted person I know and even I still go out in public once in a while.

This is not intended as a criticism. You have the right to live as you choose.

Nasty, snide comment. Shame on you.

I do go out in public regularly and shop both locally and in the nearby town centre. There are no 'shopping centres/malls' there, just individual shops that don't have piped music. No boom boxes. If I bought music it would be online, not least because Pontypool has no music shops that I'm aware of and, in any case, 'why should I buy retail and have to park up in a small town multi-storey when I can get that CD online?' I watch TV streams on demand, meaning I don't bump into contemporary music accidentally.

And so on ...

You've gone way down in my estimation.

Indeed, and despite me saying that my comment was not intended as a criticism you appear to have still taken it as a criticism.

Oh well.

For the record:

"No, just rather surprised that you live your entire life in a sealed box." is part of what you said. Plain nasty.

Yeah, she reminds me of Brie Larson a bit in that way. I think she's far more attractive into her 30's than her younger days; they've both "eaten a few sandwiches". And we were born in the same decade so I don't feel too creepy.

Gaga does, also, have a pretty amazing voice. She's another one whom I'm like, not my kinda music, but I hear the talent.

Hold up y'all! Looks like we have a Devil's Advocate.

Not everyone is a fan of Taylor Swift's Epic victory.

Behold!

Political activist Saira Rao is being criticized for calling TIME's choice of Taylor Swift for Person of the Year 'white nonsense' and claiming the pop star could bring peace to the Middle East with an Instagram post.

Rao is the co-founder of Race To Dinner, an organization that facilitates programs focused on conversations about race, and co-founder of Here4TheKids, a group advocating for banning guns and fossil fuels outright.

'The white American woman billionaire who could end the genocide of Palestinians with on IG post is TIME Person of The Year,' Rao said X, formerly known as Twitter.

'White nonsense, white violence, white love of Black and brown genocide.'

My source is the Daily Fail, but it does seem to come from a genuine Xweet.

What say you, Swifty apologists?

Saira Rao is out there busting her butt having dinner parties in which she castigates white women for their evils, and yet the one woman who could end all pain and suffering in the world is being feted on Time Magazine. Can you believe this!?

It would be enough to make Robin DeAngelo cry if white women tears was not an act of violence against the Palestinians!

To be fair, I think arth was just expressing disbelief that you would not have heard one of Taylor Swift's songs, not trying to be nasty.

I also assumed I had never heard one of her songs until I finally decided to check You Tube to see what her most popular songs were and at least one or two sounded familiar.

Also, I worry that she needs a sandwich. Skinny little thing.

The documentary mentioned above - Miss Americana - touches on her battle with some sort of eating disorder. Hopefully, she’s overcome that.

While I'd have her in the upper tier of celebrities and all around excellent humans, I have to confess that I can't recall a single specific, tangible thing she's done. I can tick off reams of others who made wide societal impacts, one way or the other. I'm sure I could Google her and find an impressive list, but seems like a Person of the Year shouldn't need to introduce their specific accomplishments.

Well, there it is... the dumbest thing I'll read on the internet today (I hope).

Not you Angrysoba, the guy you quoted... T Swift can end the violence in the Mid East with one Insta post. Yeah, about 8 US Presidents have tried and failed, but a pop star can do it with one post

"Taylor Swift is a singer-songwriter with a millions-strong fanbase, who sells out stadiums with her performances. She's probably one of the biggest entertainers in existence right now."

"Yeah, but does she actually do anything?"

That's still not how it should work. Is she the most influential person this year?

My cousin got a flat tire on Rural Route 4 and only one car stopped to help her and it was a beat-up old Honda Civic and the driver was Taylor Swift! She emerged, effulgent rays of glory emanating around her, and changed that tire by simply gesturing at it. A second gesture cleaned the car entirely, and a third filled the back seat with packages of Cracker Jack, theater-style boxed Junior Mints, and Twizzlers. Then Taylor Swift said unto her a sutra and the words solidified in the air and fell to the ground as jewels. And she floated back into her Civic and drove off, honking merrily. It was truly a transformative experience that really shows us the radiance and wonder that is Taylor Swift, and also the power of imagination unlocked by hallucinatory drugs taken recreationally in the countryside. My cousin doesn't even have a car. But Taylor Swift is still pretty cool anyway, I guess.

eta: My aunt had the exact same story except it was Bobby Sherman. He never made Person of the Year, though.

There's the way we may think these kinds of things should work, and there's the way they actually do work in practice. Time picking Taylor Swift is still a way better outcome than the Nobel Peace Prize committee picking Barack Obama. I'll take this one as a W.

That's a great argument for her being Entertainer of the Year. Not sure that Person of the Year relies on that narrow criteria.

I think Lady Gaga is one of the best talents around - she has an amazing range of songs and even managed to sway my wife - who previously hated her - with her performance in A Star is Born.

She's also hot af.

You don’t think she should be ending genocide with an Instagram post?

Funnily enough, if she could, I'm 100% certain she would.

Isn't the point of the thing to drum up interest in "Time" magazine? Not that it works: it just drums up interest in Taylor Swift. I learned a lot more about her in this thread than I knew before.

You're a hard bloke to please.

If she'd trumpeted her achievements and altruism you'd be saying it was carefully curated to give a favourable impression.

She doesn't, so you're asking what she's done that's so admirable!

Trust me, I don't fall in love with celebrities and she had to do a lot to win me over from the insipid bubblegum country Conservative America's sweetheart bible-thumping image she started out with.

I hear every word of that. But when I get on this forum, I'm specifically tuning in to being critical in my thinking. I hear TS is PotY, and my first gut reaction is "it couldn't be bestowed on a better person. She's generous AF, great positive role model, and all that". Just seems a little weird that I can't name a single charity she has unquestionably given to. So I'm questioning why I have such a knee jerk positive vibe about her.

I can list reasons for disliking Kanye, or liking Keanu. But I'm drawing a blank with Swift, other than a general very good feeling.

I think it's more just to be a contrarian on almost every issue, but I digress. Skepticism isn't just arguing against something, just so you know.

Have you ever, like...you know, looked? Ever put in any actual effort to find that information? Anyway, you have a "knee jerk positive vibe about her" because she's genuinely a positive person, and has that effect on people around her. However, here's an article about her various donations to food banks and cancer patients on her Era's tour (previously mentioned). Here's a bit of a timeline going over some of the random things she's done. I mean, the internet is ******* littered with article after article of things she's done. Most of them generally state that she goes out of her way to NOT make them public. She doesn't want everyone knowing, she just wants to help people.

Because you've either never bothered looking, or just don't care. Either are fine, but it's pretty well documented.

Thank you for criticizing what you didn't bother to actually read.
