For instance, you could pop over to the FoxNews message board and start a thread titled "Why do some people think America would still be America if everyone here spoke French?" (incidentally, I am with you on this one, if the language were different, it would still be America). Be sure to use French and not Dutch or Italian. The FoxNews posters really hate France. If the thread slows down, simply add a post "Is it true that France helped the USA during the Revolutionary War?"

Did you miss it?

Lots of people did miss it. But when I saw it run last night the first thing that came to my mind was "oh that will piss off Republicans by reminding them that this is a country of immigrants; a fact they really wish they could erase from history."

I only saw the ad on YouTube earlier today, but as soon I finished watching it I pretty much could guess what the outrage would be from certain circles. And I'm not even an American.

No, you are wrong. An influx of motivated workers from varied backgrounds, together with what was at the time an inexhaustible amount of natural resources was what made the US a world power. Being oceans away from two world wars helped consolidate that.

When did this song become a deeply Christian anthem?

It's interesting that so many people object to singing America the Beautiful in languages other than English, yet no one seems to care that it's being used to flog soda pop.

Because shilling for fizzy sugar water is American, unlike tolerance and diversity.

Here's my evil plot:

1) Reply to the most negative comments telling them that America the Beautiful was written by a feminist lesbian to profess her love for an inclusive America.

The original population of this continent were Natives of many tribes and languages. Then the Spanish and French took over for a while. Um...if people who don't know a word of English, are singing the US anthem...isn't that *good* for the US?

Well, there's a fine line between being patriotically proud of America and being just parochially chauvinistic about it; a lot of these folks are probably the same ones who go to places like France or Germany and complain when people there don't speak English.

But, yeah...if the message of the song, America as an ideal, is the important thing, I don't see why the language it's delivered in should be so overriding a consideration. In fact, if the yearning for that ideal is expressed in a language other than English, that seems like more of a compliment to America than an insult to her.
