I haven't read this thread yet, but my guess is, it's the blatant rip-off of Nirvanas album cover for Nevermind at around 0:39.
Whether your assertions about Travis's habits are true or not, this story was big news today. I'm very lazy about browsing the news outside this forum, but I saw this nonsense right at the bottom of the main bing.com page. What I find hilarious is that, based on his body of work, Travis spends faaar more time tracking conservative opinion than I do.
I think I waste more time per day reading Travis threads, than I do reading conservative opinion.
Yes, cue our hippie comments.
I only now live in America because lots of people crossed oceans to be in this country. My paternal grandmother even did the immigration thing illegally. I have no problem with a commercial that recognizes this by showing the languages of all the disparate parts of the world that now form the social and cultural agglomeration that we have named the United State of America; a nation that just happened to write its constitution in English because it was convenient at the time. We are a powerful and rich nation thanks to that diversity and any attempt to disavow it is an attempt to disregard the very thing that has made the nation what it is today.
Whatever. Yeah, that other song's the Official anthem. Still...
The point of the offense taken at these propagandistic ads is that, ala Guns, Germs, and Steel, the traditional US population resents having its language, culture, religion, and, yes, race, being "engulfed" by unending influxes of increasingly chauvinistic and unassimilable aliens, to the point where the original culture is hollowed out and erased.
Where on earth does this idea come from that original culture means English speaking and white?
Just how far back do we have to go to find this monochromatic paradise of yours?
Dear Travis,
You're implying that "diversity" made the US the world power that it was and is increasingly no longer. Thank Alexander Hamilton's American System of economics for that. A polyglot hodgepodge populace had nothing to do with America's "power and riches".

The solution is to step up to Classical culture, which is universal anyway, and encourages rational and beautiful thinking in the bargain so that the different competing groups in the country won't be at each other's throats. I doubt Glenn Beck or any of the others you quoted grok the Schiller Institute to know what is the best of what is worth defending, and so instead slide into debased chauvinism themselves.

Shucks, I really thought this thread would be about the outrage caused by having the gay dads with the daughter in the ad.![]()
The "god" line was in there, in English. Which I found a little surprising since it was supposed to be celebrating such diversity.
I didn't think much about the political implications. My problem was that the meter of the different languages didn't fit the meter of the song.

Sounds utopian. Too bad it doesn't exist. Unless, of course, I don't understand what "Classical culture" is. Maybe you better explain it.The solution is to step up to Classical culture, which is universal anyway, and encourages rational and beautiful thinking in the bargain so that the different competing groups in the country won't be at each other's throats.
