Coke creates advert that causes conservatives to go nuts

I haven't read this thread yet, but my guess is, it's the blatant rip-off of Nirvanas album cover for Nevermind at around 0:39.

What I find hilarious is that, based on his body of work, Travis spends faaar more time tracking conservative opinion than I do.

I think I waste more time per day reading Travis threads, than I do reading conservative opinion.
Whether your assertions about Travis's habits are true or not, this story was big news today. I'm very lazy about browsing the news outside this forum, but I saw this nonsense right at the bottom of the main bing.com page.

Yes, cue our hippie comments.

I only now live in America because lots of people crossed oceans to be in this country. My paternal grandmother even did the immigration thing illegally. I have no problem with a commercial that recognizes this by showing the languages of all the disparate parts of the world that now form the social and cultural agglomeration that we have named the United State of America; a nation that just happened to write its constitution in English because it was convenient at the time. We are a powerful and rich nation thanks to that diversity and any attempt to disavow it is an attempt to disregard the very thing that has made the nation what it is today.

Dear Travis,

You're implying that "diversity" made the US the world power that it was and is increasingly no longer. Thank Alexander Hamilton's American System of economics for that. A polyglot hodgepodge populace had nothing to do with America's "power and riches".

The point of the offense taken at these propagandistic ads is that, ala Guns, Germs, and Steel, the traditional US population resents having its language, culture, religion, and, yes, race, being "engulfed" by unending influxes of increasingly chauvinistic and unassimilable aliens, to the point where the original culture is hollowed out and erased.

The solution is to step up to Classical culture, which is universal anyway, and encourages rational and beautiful thinking in the bargain so that the different competing groups in the country won't be at each other's throats. I doubt Glenn Beck or any of the others you quoted grok the Schiller Institute to know what is the best of what is worth defending, and so instead slide into debased chauvinism themselves.

Where on earth does this idea come from that original culture means English speaking and white?

Just how far back do we have to go to find this monochromatic paradise of yours?

Far enough to warn the Wampanoag.

The original population of this continent were Natives of many tribes and languages. Then the Spanish and French took over for a while. Then the English, Dutch, Germans and Poles moved in in successive waves. Some of those brought slaves from Africa and meanwhile enslaved and slaughtered the Natives. Then the Irish came in various waves. Also Italians. Etc.

What the hell are you even talking about?

Shucks, I really thought this thread would be about the outrage caused by having the gay dads with the daughter in the ad.

Were they all too shocked and outraged by the singing in different languages and various ethnicities to notice that? Personally I think the ad is BEAUTIFUL. So there.

Gay dads!? *head explodes*

I'm sure it was just one man who is married to one woman, with his daughter and his brother who is the girl's godfather.

The "god" line was in there, in English. Which I found a little surprising since it was supposed to be celebrating such diversity.

I didn't think much about the political implications. My problem was that the meter of the different languages didn't fit the meter of the song.

They should have trolled hard by changing that reference to Allah.

To anyone voicing such opinions childhood nostalgic views of their culture.

It sure seems an ever producing and fascinating well spring of WTF.

What in the holy hell? Is this satire and I'm not getting it?

Well then. I guess I'm saving you time.

I disagree. I think that having the vast experience of a multitude of disparate cultures operating under the Hamilton system made it much more effective.

1) Cultures always change.
2) American culture is not defined by the language. An America where everyone speaks French would still be America.
3) Nothing in the commercial indicates the individuals singing are chauvinistic and unassimilable aliens.

Sounds utopian. Too bad it doesn't exist. Unless, of course, I don't understand what "Classical culture" is. Maybe you better explain it.

You took the words right out of my mouth. What is this imaginary "Classical Culture"? Which particular timeslice of the evolving American Dream does it comprise?
